To book a hotel just so I can have a shower?

In the middle of bathroom renovations. Now been ten days without a bathroom. We have a toilet we can flush with a bucket 🤢but that’s all.

Ive been strip washing in the kitchen every day so I know theoretically I am not dirty but I feel disgusting. I’ve managed to wash my hair once in the sink, not that successfully and that feels minging too.

A cheap hotel for a night (eg two days of showering!) would be at least £50 and really can’t afford it (bathroom gone way over budget), but we have at least another week of this and I’m not sure I can bear it!!

It’s a weeks worth of food shopping for us too. Which is why I’m deliberating it.

Should have sorted the gym in advance but I was trying to be all calm and go with the flow rather than stressing about it all 😏

Yes if no other option I'd go for the hotel after that long. If possible either go somewhere interesting that you'd like to go to anyway, or if just going down the road, at least make sure the shower is decent. A new hotel is usually a safe bet.

JustLyra · 04/12/2022 22:52

Depending where you are some train stations and service stations have showers. Usually about £5.

Some are nicer than others, but some really are decent.

catsonahottinroof · 04/12/2022 22:53

Other option - go to a hairdressers just for a blow dry.

Wigeon · 04/12/2022 22:54

Do you literally know no one local? Not even DC’s friend’s parents, if you have school aged DC?

If you’re happy to post whereabouts you live then I’m sure there will be at least one mumsnetter who will offer you their shower! You can borrow mine if you’re near me!!

AriettyHomily · 04/12/2022 22:55

Just go to the gym and wear flip flops.

Itssooooocold · 04/12/2022 22:56

Oh just go to the pool, you don't have to actually go for a swim

Spectre8 · 04/12/2022 22:56

Does your workplace have showers?

Twinklenoseblows · 04/12/2022 22:58

How grim can your local swimming pool be that you would rather spend your weekly food budget on a hotel room just for two showers? No matter how grim it is I'm pretty sure you'll come out cleaner than you went in.

PurpleishDahlia · 04/12/2022 23:00

Here to offer my sympathies - my last shower at home was on the 9th of October. Still in the middle of bathroom renovations which husband is doing himself so noone knows when it will be over. I'm using: kitchen sink daily, local swimming pool showers weekly, and also visited MIL for a week late November and took full advantage of her shower room.
I would also book a hotel, not a bad idea.

CoffeeNeeded2019 · 04/12/2022 23:04

Our local pool have a button on the till just for a shower - I found out when our bathroom took forever!

I said I’d happily pay for a swim but explained why I just wanted a shower and it cost me about £2!
Not the best shower but much better than a sink wash! (And just wear flip flops!)

TrixJax · 04/12/2022 23:04

Just go to local swimming pool. Doesn't matter if it's a bit grotty, it's only for a shower. Hopefully you'll only have to go once and then your own shower will be useable in couple of days

honeyandbutterontoast · 04/12/2022 22:43

Moved to a new area recently so nobody here to ask. Family live a couple of hours away. Local pool a bit grotty to be frank. Gym membership I had considered but they want me to do a trial session first and no spaces for that at moment 😂

Stupidly I didn’t realise it would take this long. I’ve done bathrooms before and it’s been a couple of days tops!

Do you definitely need a trial to use the pool? My gym you have to have a trial before using gym equipment, but the classes and the pool were accessible without a trial.

Dixiechickonhols · 04/12/2022 23:05

Our leisure centre has a price to use just the shower. It’s £4 ish.

Jackiecirca1987 · 04/12/2022 23:06

Use a watering can and stand in the biggest basin you have? 😂

It will be worth it in the end!

lookersnoopy · 04/12/2022 23:07

Muchtoomuchtodo · 04/12/2022 22:40

In fact if you say where you are I bet one of us would happily let you borrow our shower!

This is Mumsnet where people get offended if a visitor or tradesperson uses the toilet / I can't imagine the disgust people would show at someone using their shower Smile

scoobydoo1971 · 04/12/2022 23:08

Local authority pool has showers and changing rooms. No obligation to use the pool, pop in, scrub and maybe have a coffee?

willstarttomorrow · 04/12/2022 23:08

Just go to the council gym. It may be grotty but far less grotty than not having a shower. Or pay for a hotel room if it is that bad

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 04/12/2022 23:08

Can you look into a pool at the next town? Or find a hotel with a gym/pool offering day membership to guests.

Managinggenzoclock · 04/12/2022 23:08

I’d ask a friend or go to a leisure centre

TheChosenTwo · 04/12/2022 23:09

To be fair @lookersnoopy people on mn often admit to not opening their front doors unless to an arrangement made three weeks in advance confirmed by phone calls leading up to the event. So you might be right 😂

kittensinthekitchen · 04/12/2022 23:09

What are your children doing for washing their hair?

10 days already and a week still to go? You need a plan.

malmi · 04/12/2022 23:11

Local pool "a bit grotty". Ok. The showers have clean hot water, yes? You have soap and flip flops and a clean towel? Sounds like you're making excuses for the hotel break you really want. Which is fine, but don't pretend you couldn't just go to the pool if you just wanted a hot shower

Rosalindisafuckingnightmare · 04/12/2022 23:11

Alternative options: Service station? Airport?
Work may have showers your aren’t aware of. Local pool may actually still be a great option for more showers per spend even if it isn’t super swanky and lovely.

However YWNBU to consider the hotel. They may also have a day rate (although I suppose overnight would give you two showers). A shower will feel glorious and better than some random tat Christmas presents!

converseandjeans · 04/12/2022 23:12

Stupidly I didn’t realise it would take this long. I’ve done bathrooms before and it’s been a couple of days tops!

Had same issue recently when we had bathroom done & we only have one toilet. It took two weeks plus a couple of days the following week. However he did leave bath connected so we could have a bath.

I would go to local gym and explain and see if you can get use of shower.
