To hate bloody Christmas cards?

I'm not a Christmas Grinch - I like Christmas. But AIBU to think that Christmas cards are a total waste of time and money? I fucking hate them. I wish no one would send them to me. They end up cluttering up the windowsills and making the house look untidy. I don't send any except to my bloody mother who makes a right fuss if I don't send her one. She also comments on my lack of card sending to others. Fuck off.

Is anyone with me?

Not a fan here either. Messy untidy things.

We gave up sending them years ago and generally any we get go straight into the recycling box by the front door.

PuddyR79 · 04/12/2022 17:46

I love sending and receiving Christmas cards.

gettingolderandgrumpier · 04/12/2022 17:46

i hate Christmas cards it’s a tradition that’s needs dying out imo .
I remember years ago giving and receiving cards to everyone at work etc .
my mil writes about 100 every year , it’s a tedious job that no one cares about . Some just do it out of obligation.
those that write cards honestly do you do it so you get them back ? Would you be annoyed if they binned them ? Do you mind that people do it just because you’ve sent them a card ? .
keep sending them if you enjoy it but be mindful I’m certain a fair few of those won’t care for cards .

I've written loads this morning to family, friends and baby class teachers so hopefully they don't feel the same as you 🙈 My cards are keepsakes though as they have pictures of my little one on 🥰

Most of the people you've sent to will not treat the cars as a keepsake! Only close family will. 😂

For the rest, all you've done is made it so they can't reuse your card as a gift label next year.

@DillDanding are your DC allowed to have presents downstairs or do they interfere with your anally perfect lounge?

Elphame · 04/12/2022 17:51

XmasElfontheShelf · 04/12/2022 14:42

Interesting to know if all the people here who hate them and say 'bad for the environment' feel the same about their own birthdays.

Yes - they go directly into recycling too.

No one who knows me (other than my mother) gives me cards for any occasion

Presents are allowed. Usually in obscene quantities. But any naff wrapping is hidden behind others 😆

I don't use social media so cards are sometimes the only outreach I have just to keep some loose connections. The ones I get I save in a pretty dish on the mantle and my in-laws go through them because many are their friends who love to send and get cards from the next generation. These are people who sent baby gifts, wedding gifts over the years. Least we can do.

Oh and people hate pics of the kids? We also include pictures of the pets and of US so that they see how old and fat we are getting too! I don't expect anyone to save ours. Not even close relatives. Theya re like a snapchat in my mind.

TomTraubertsBlues · 04/12/2022 17:54

Having read the thread, I am bemused at why people are instantly recycling the cards.... cut the front off and they make excellent (and free) Christmas gift tags! Reuse is better than recycling, folks!

ShillyShallySherbet · 04/12/2022 18:24

I suppose in a way it’s just nice to let people know you’re thinking of them and to know that you’re being thought of at this time of year. Although a text or what’sapp would do the trick, it’s not quite the same is it. Having cards up around your house is a reminder of all the people who’ve thought of you. I would mind if my card was being binned straight away and really hope that’s not the case but then I suppose I’d never know!

faffadoodledo · 04/12/2022 18:26

I quite like being remembered, and remembering friends. But over the years some old friends have dropped off my list, and i off theirs. Then suddenly OUT of the BLUE one of those might send me a card after several years of silence and that completely knocks me off my Xmas perch - arghhh - do I reciprocate??

ShillyShallySherbet · 04/12/2022 18:27

Absolutely! I always save last years Christmas cards, pack them away with my Christmas decorations. Then the next year I look through the cards so I know who to send cards to this year and then I cut off the picture on the front to make gift tags if I can. If I can’t then, and only then, it goes in the recycling bin. I keep special handmade or bespoke cards.

Mimilamore · 04/12/2022 18:29

With the price of postage and unreliable service then I agree with you.

angharadsgoat · 04/12/2022 18:33

I buy a small pack of cards for those I know would be upset not to receive one in return. Though many don't send them now.

MissyB1 · 04/12/2022 18:34

I love them but I’m probably a lot older than OP. I’ve just finished writing mine, they all need to be posted as I only send them to people who don’t live in our area. I’ve got 8 to send to friends abroad, and 8 for UK. Me and my siblings place particular value on cards following the deaths of our parents.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 04/12/2022 18:44

I am with you. I will write none, and don’t care if I receive none. Pointless.

phoenixrosehere · 04/12/2022 18:46

Daisybuttercup12345 · 04/12/2022 17:30

Why do you bother to shred them?

Compost (depending on the ink, smaller pieces break down easier) and they can be used as filling for gift bags and other things.

I actually don’t mind those Christmas Cards with relatives and their children on them so I can tell my sons who the people are and our relation to them. I’ll happily take those vs the cards that says Happy Christmas in different ways and little else.

It's a flat card so they couldn't anyway 🤷‍♀️🤣

angharadsgoat · 04/12/2022 18:56

Though I miss reading the round Robin letters my parents and grandparents used to receive.

My grandparents even used to even receive one from a couple met on holiday, some 30 years + earlier, but hadn't seen since (they only stopped after they passed away some years ago).

My uncle sends a seasonal-type email round Robin, which would make Mr Toad blush with embarrassment at the boasting, but it's not quite the same.

NoNamesLeft234678 · 04/12/2022 18:57

BecauseICan22 · 04/12/2022 14:23

These kind are the worse! Other than immediate family, and even that's debatable, no one keeps them.

No one.

I know at least 5 people that have kept last year's but if they don't keep them then it's not like I'd know

angharadsgoat · 04/12/2022 19:03

Round Robin letters were enclosed in the Christmas card or written in the card itself. Sometimes with photos.

CovertImage · 04/12/2022 19:07

Christ, every fucking year the same "I hate christmas cards, wah, wah, wah! threads, like it's obligatory

Trollsintheforest · 04/12/2022 19:10

A fb friend of mine always post every year that she won’t do Christmas cards this year instead she will give to charity. It’s probably just me, but I find that post so annoying too..
