To hate bloody Christmas cards?

HandbagsnGladrags · 04/12/2022 13:41

I'm not a Christmas Grinch - I like Christmas. But AIBU to think that Christmas cards are a total waste of time and money? I fucking hate them. I wish no one would send them to me. They end up cluttering up the windowsills and making the house look untidy. I don't send any except to my bloody mother who makes a right fuss if I don't send her one. She also comments on my lack of card sending to others. Fuck off.

Is anyone with me?

Nobody seems to send postcards any more. It's time Christmas cards went the same way. I have sent any for years. I don't get many either, now, which is great :)

Mummieslncorporated · 04/12/2022 14:37

Haven't sent any*

MintJulia · 04/12/2022 14:38

I've just finished mine, I'm about to walk to the post box.

I love them. A quick easy way to let friends and family know I'm here for them if they need me. I put the ones we receive, all over the house, where they cheer us up for a week or two.

Then I cut them up into tags for presents next year, and the written-on bits get used as firelighters.

I guess you either like them or you don't 😊

somanybooks · 04/12/2022 14:39

I hate them too. Very bad for the environment and, elderly relatives aside, completely unnecessary. Ones with personal photos on are just a gift of extra guilt when you inevitably bin them.

DuchessofSandwich · 04/12/2022 14:39

I keep a list of who sent them to me. If they haven't sent a card in the past two years then they go off the list. I also order them digitally so no faffing with stamps et cetera. The list gets shorter each year. I used to send 150ish, it's now 30.

Bonjovispyjamas · 04/12/2022 14:40

Yes, you are a grinch, as are many other people on this thread. Christmas cards are just a nice gesture, I like them.

DuchessofSandwich · 04/12/2022 14:41

@BecauseICan22

Why are cards with the family on them the worst? I send them, but I fully expect them to go in the bin later on (except granny's, I know she keeps them).

YANBU can't stand them. Ours are in a pile usually on top of the fire then go in recycling. I'm only sending them to service users this year.

You need to tell your friends to stop sending them.

Horrible behaviour to accept them and not even put them out on show.

What a waste of their time and money.

XmasElfontheShelf · 04/12/2022 14:42

Interesting to know if all the people here who hate them and say 'bad for the environment' feel the same about their own birthdays.

TheLadyOfHay · 04/12/2022 14:43

My parents are both dead and I get cards from some of their friends. The number of cards decreases every year which saddens me as that is another link with my parents gone.

The cards I receive are an important part of the decorations in my house. I like them and working out what the trend is that year, robins, Christmas trees, angels etc. If they’re charity ones at least someone else benefits from them too

Lovetotravel123 · 04/12/2022 14:43

Totally agree with you.

It's entirely possible to love Christmas without all the nonsense. Nonsense as in things like cards and spending money on things other people don't want while they spend money on things you don't want. And 20 tins of sweets and biscuits.

I don't think Jesus (if you believe in him) would want his birthday used at an excuse to spend money you don't have and feed a mad consumerist frenzy.

dizzygirl1 · 04/12/2022 14:44

Not writing any this year. I also Hate them. Any I recieve go straight into the recycling. Worst thing....I've asked people not to waste money on buying and sending them, they ignore it. So frustrating. I really don't want them.

escapingthecity · 04/12/2022 14:44

I adore them. Love getting them, love sending them, love the connection and celebration of them.

Flapjackquack · 04/12/2022 14:45

I like to send and receive cards. I put a photo of my DC in ones for my grandparents and great aunts/uncles who don’t use WhatsApp. They do specifically tell my Mum they get excited to receive the photos though.

I do however LOVE a round robin and get excited to receive them from the same
people each year. Sadly, I don’t have the flair (or lifestyle!) to write one, so my nearest and dearest won’t ever know that my toddler’s first word was onomatopoeia or that we popped to the Maldives for a week as life was just too stressful, only a week mind as money is tight and my dear husband Rupert had to get back to work to finalise a very important deal. 😁

I'm even worse about my birthday. I actively encourage people to ignore it completely.

At Christmas we have a family get together with food and games etc.

Hate birthday cards too. But I wasn't actually thinking of the environment.

There's craft groups that take Christmas cards but I can never be arsed taking them.

HandbagsnGladrags · 04/12/2022 14:47

Ooh that's a good idea to use them as firelighters!

I've said many times to the people who send me them that I don't do Christmas cards and I won't be offended if they don't send them to me. But still they keep sending them. And my mum keeps on with the passive aggressive comments every time she passes a card on to me from some random distant cousin who I haven't seen in 10 years.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 04/12/2022 14:47

Christmas cards are the only decorations I put up in my house so I'm quite happy to get them. Can't stand the faff of putting up decorations so cards are a quick, low maintenance and free nod to the season Wink

cobblers123 · 04/12/2022 14:48

I quite like them but my list is vastly reduced since leaving work so I give fewer than I used to and don't get so many back.

I stick mine on the glass panes in the lounge and dining room doors, they look quite festive and keeps them of the window sills and mantlepiece where they would probably keep falling to the floor.

DillDanding · 04/12/2022 14:48

I can honestly say that about 99% of our friends no longer send cards and also hate receiving them. I can't think of any house we visit over Christmas, other than elderly relatives, that has cards on display.

I have one friend that loves them and she always sends us an A4 size card to annoy us (because she knows how much I hate them). I then send her a photo of said card in the recycling bin. It has become a Christmas tradition.

I've written loads this morning to family, friends and baby class teachers so hopefully they don't feel the same as you 🙈 My cards are keepsakes though as they have pictures of my little one on 🥰

Do you honestly think they see it as keepsakes..they won’t.

I do with regards to gifts etc but I usually celebrate. Any excuse 😉

They are not keepsakes. They are really weird 'we are so important' type cards that most people don't want to receive let alone keep!

OP I don't do cards and only receive the odd one or 2, I have been gradually pulling back for years and surround myself with very few people naturally!

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 04/12/2022 14:48

I also hate them and they go straight into the recycling. Clutter and usually hideous.

I don’t send any either.
