To hate bloody Christmas cards?

HandbagsnGladrags · 04/12/2022 13:41

I'm not a Christmas Grinch - I like Christmas. But AIBU to think that Christmas cards are a total waste of time and money? I fucking hate them. I wish no one would send them to me. They end up cluttering up the windowsills and making the house look untidy. I don't send any except to my bloody mother who makes a right fuss if I don't send her one. She also comments on my lack of card sending to others. Fuck off.

Is anyone with me?

I like them. But I only send around 20 so no big chore. Lots of my friends send them too and we're all mid 30s. We're all spread across the country so don't see each other much so I think its nice. I wouldn't be offended if ppl didn't bother to send me one though, up to them. Ppl on MN seem to really hate them though I've noticed.

luckylavender · 04/12/2022 15:18

I love Christmas cards. Essential part of Christmas.

LubaLuca · 04/12/2022 15:19

I like getting them. We receive so few handwritten things in the post that it feels special to receive them.

They're mainly to and from older family and friends, young people are easier to keep in touch with on social media. I still get a card every year from my children's nursery teacher (who retired years ago) with a note in about where she and her sister have been this year, any changes in the area we used to live in and so on. I think it's important to maintain this annual tradition with some people, and I guess they like it too or they wouldn't bother.

AuntieMarys · 04/12/2022 15:19

Hate them. Don't send any anxiety haven't for about 7 years. Equally I don't want to receive any

MavisCruet2023 · 04/12/2022 15:00

They are a waste of time, paper and resources.
They are wifework also.

Not in this house. We share them. Also I buy the cards and keep the list up to date. DH is in charge of postage and posting.

Needaholidaypronto · 04/12/2022 15:24

Hate them, so wasteful. Might send to overseas but mostly everyone gets a merry Christmas text/fb post coupled with “the money I could have spent I’ve donated to crisis at Christmas” which is a better use of the cash imo

if you fancy doing that link here!

Laiste · 04/12/2022 15:25

God i'm glad it's not a thing anymore.

When i think of the piles of the bloody things i used to write. Mainly because of the poking and prodding from my mother 🙄

Long lost Auntie this and Uncle that and umpteen long ago moved on neighbours.

About 10 years ago i thought ''sod this'' and stopped sending any - apart from the most elderly relatives.

Relief!

Bagzzz · 04/12/2022 15:25

i send a few mostly older people I won’t see. I can understand not liking them, I don’t understand hatred. So many things involve a waste of paper, ink and fuel in delivery, these at least are enjoyed by some. Put them in the recycling or use at kindling but summoning hatred for this seems a waste of mental energy.

Interesting to know if all the people here who hate them and say 'bad for the environment' feel the same about their own birthdays.

Yes I do. Cards of any kind are just a huge waste of resources, overpriced and for someone who lives abroad massively expensive to post. I'd much rather people stopped sending them for any occasion.

theswoot · 04/12/2022 15:26

YANBU to not like them but you are being a bit Grinchy about it!

I come from a family who like to send and receive cards and I am the same! If someone told me not to bother I would take them off my list, no drama, and I do tend to not send to people who I haven’t received from in a couple of years.

CharityShopChic · 04/12/2022 15:26

garlictwist · 04/12/2022 14:10

I haven't sent a Christmas card since I was at school and I'm 40 now. I never get many and those I do just go in the recycling Blush.

Me either, and I'm 10 years older than you. Total waste of resources.

Mrsjayy · 04/12/2022 15:28

I give cards to maybe a dozen people I don't send them anymore and only receive a few which is fine. I'm not into them either.

Cardamoney · 04/12/2022 15:28

There are a lot of Grinches around. I love sending and getting cards, mostly from old friends I don’t live near anymore but like to know how they’re doing each year.
What really bugs me is the virtue signallers who say “I’m not doing cards this year, I’m donating to charity instead”. Some of us buy charity cards. At least if you say “I’m donating to charity because I can’t be arsed writing cards” it’s honest!😄

7upandup · 04/12/2022 15:30

I don't mind writing them but hate receiving them because I hate clutter and dh always puts them on the window ledge and I just want to bin them. I feel the same about birthday cards.

Annie232 · 04/12/2022 15:31

Totally agree with you, I cba with them either unless they contain a cheque

Ah see I don't donate to charity I just don't send them 😃

HandbagsnGladrags · 04/12/2022 15:32

Same here @Mrsjayy. I spend it on wine instead.

I like 'nice ' Christmas cards that look lovely when put up. Hate the rubbish ones made of flimsy card and esp those tiny little ones that look like greetings tag, why bother sending those?

Mummieslncorporated · 04/12/2022 15:34

Some of us buy charity cards

The percentage that goes to charity with those cards is often really small. So for the equivalent of a £20 donation you'd need to spend £200 on cards.

Buy them if you like, but don't make the mistake of thinking they get a significant amount of the money. In a lot of cases you might be better off buying cheaper cards and sending the difference to the charity.

XmasElfontheShelf · 04/12/2022 15:34

Me either, and I'm 10 years older than you. Total waste of resources.

what do you mean by 'resources' @CharityShopChic ?

If it's paper, do you apply that to birthday cards? newsprint? magazines? Books?
Many card companies work on the basis of planting a tree for every one used.

You could also argue that almost everything in a consumer society is a waste of resources.

How do you keep in touch with friends? A keyboard? A phone? Car? Train? Bus? Plane?
They all use plastic, metal, energy.

Multiply that by 1000s sold and it all adds up.

Cornelious · 04/12/2022 15:36

I hate them too. Don't like sending or receiving. I'll only get one for my dh and dc.

Mummieslncorporated · 04/12/2022 15:36

It would add up to a lot more if people didn't buy the cards and just donated what they would have spent instead. Or, as I said, buy cheaper cards and send the difference.

Cardamoney · 04/12/2022 15:37

🤣🤣🤣

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 04/12/2022 15:37

And ones that are ‘To my darling wife, mother, sister, niece, nephew’ can get right in the (recycling) bin. Beyond tacky.
