To think no one can name a single positive benefit of Brexit

Just that really. I'm genuinely curious. There seems to be increasing coverage and evidence of the harm and cost of Brexit. Can anyone point to a positive benefit?

Repeats on MN. No need to develop new content when you can just quack on week after week, month after month, year after year.

So I'm other words, you actually can't think of anything?

Ilovemycatalot · 04/12/2022 08:37

And I just know that some remain fanatic will be along very shortly to rip to shreds any positive comments about brexit because let’s face it most in mumsnet are against it and these threads always go the same way.

Hooverphobe · 04/12/2022 08:38

@AccioChocolate when you start a thread in poor faith - don’t expect people to engage with you in good faith.

I think moaning about rejoining has surpassed that though ;

Not heard anyone saying we should rejoin just moaning that we shouldn't have left.

The whole world's gone to shit so it's not on my mind any more tbh

Oh yeah moaning we shouldn’t have left you’re right. It just noise to me you’ve got to zone out at some point.

£6bn increase in the price of food so we can all go on a diet?

SlagathaChristie · 04/12/2022 08:49

Not being controlled by the EU. I voted remain, but have since changed my mind.

vitaminC · 04/12/2022 08:49

I've lived abroad too long to have been allowed to vote, but I did actually find a silver lining to the Brexit cloud - my DD decided to study in the UK and the uni charged her home student fees as she is a British national, despite her having left as a baby.
They just asked for a copy of her passport and then classed her as a home student.

pompei8309 · 04/12/2022 08:52

The sales I used to lose to EU countries selling in the UK are much more higher than the few import duties I pay to brink the stock over , therefore is very beneficial for my business

Marigoldandivy · 04/12/2022 08:52

I do like having my passport stamped again. Somehow though it doesn’t make up for the dire economic impact and weakening of our place in Europe.

The new rules banning the export of live animals for fattening and slaughter has only been possible post-Brexit.

Farmer friends say that Brexit has meant an increased focus on conservation in farmland management.

I'm an ardent remainer BTW, but desperate to see any positives that there are...

Interesting - a lot of the farmers I know have just been bemoaning the fact that they're losing huge subsidies, raised costs and created a phenomenal amount of red tape.

@WorriedMutha
Indeed, ironic since the only reason the idiot Cameron called the referendum was to put the issue to bed and unite the Tories

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 04/12/2022 09:04

RudsyFarmer · 04/12/2022 07:58

I think if any positives are there they won’t show itself for a long time.

I have this feeling that we’re moving into a new era where borders will become important. I think the earth will become more and more unstable politically and when large swathes of people start moving the European Union will start to break up with countries demanding to be able to defend their borders. At that point we’ll have already ironed out our creases and might think to ourselves thank god we got out ten years ago and are somewhat insulated from the upheaval.

I agree with this as well

Thisbastardcomputer · 04/12/2022 09:05

It was voted in, it happened eventually, get over it.

I was going to post this. But they used to stamp your passport if you asked pre Brexit so it’s actually not having to ask to have your passport stamped.

I love those stamps

Um…….. dark blue passport?

I'm struggling to understand why the colour of passport is so important TBH. I couldn't care less what colour it is.

Brexit has caused so many headaches at work. We have branches of our company in Ireland and now there is so much more red tape because we can't just transfer stock to Ireland. It is classed as an export and incurs extra admin and expense.

I would like a luminous yellow or similar passport. Much easier to spot in your bag.

GrumpyPanda · 04/12/2022 09:16

LlynTegid · 04/12/2022 07:51

Not having UKIP or Brexit Party members being paid money from the public purse.

Hmm. With batshit ERG types actually in government and calling the shots in the conservative Party would you truly say that's ab improvement?

Untitledsquatboulder · 04/12/2022 09:17

There are potential benefits around immigration and reform of agricultural policy. Not that we've done anything productive with the former and the farming lobby is fighting hard against the latter.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 04/12/2022 08:00

£350 million a week more for the NHS?

Oh, wait…

That was a lie.

Yep, and don't understand why Boris was never called to task on this as was his campaign an his message. This is what turned wavering voters and was a huge huge sham. Disgraceful.

rumship · 04/12/2022 09:22

Watching remainders have mental breakdowns and still to this day apparently. 🤣

Tryingtokeepgoing · 04/12/2022 09:22

I am very much a remainer, but I have to say that whether it was BREXIT or Covid, the reduced labour supply at the bottom has put more power back in the hands of the low paid, and they are being paid more. Minimum wage might be £10 an hour, but supermarkets, restaurants, warehouses round me are routinely adverting at £12/13 an hour. That has to be a good thing.

In a more light hearted way, the massive increase in availability of English sparking wine is good, and the huge reduction in food miles now that salad can’t come from Spain by road as easily is also better for the environment ;)

It’s not easy to do. I don’t know the maritime laws but but seems tricky. Although I don’t know how Australia does it. They have a Labor gov now but no switch on migrant policy. Starmer seems to be talking about focusing on workers here than immigrants (a missed opportunity imo).

But what will drive it is public, atm we’re not there but as citizens demand it things change - Aus is a good example.

Anyway there’s another Brexit thread running with same theme and a bit early for more of same but I agree with pp it keeps mn running.

Australia has a robust and effective border patrol with many very fast boats patrolling the maritime border. They catch a lot of boats, and most of the refugees are sent to Nauru or Christmas Island. Not many make it to Oz, it's a lot more difficult to get a boat from Sri Lanka to Oz for example, than Calais to Dover.

PermanentTemporary · 04/12/2022 09:28

Upward pressure on wages.

It doesn't make much difference to life, given inflation and economic collapse, but I believe a lot of people voted Leave for this reason, and it's happening. It's easy to get a job of some sort if you want one in a lot of places now. And I do think that's Brexit.

Voted Remain BTW and still would.
