To think no one can name a single positive benefit of Brexit

Just that really. I'm genuinely curious. There seems to be increasing coverage and evidence of the harm and cost of Brexit. Can anyone point to a positive benefit?

Do we not still have a specific space on here for brexit. These repeated threads are so tedious and I didn't even vote for brexit. I just think we need to move on now and deal with things.

Tory Gov under BJ and onwards has been a disaster. A softer brexit might have been a very different outlook.

Lalliella · 04/12/2022 08:06

The fact that we got the vaccine quicker had nothing to do with Brexit. Boris Johnson took a gamble and ordered it before it was fully tested, the EU waited. We could still have done this as a member of the EU. Fortunately the gamble paid off. But he could have wasted billions on a dud vaccine like he did on PPR and the test and trace system.

frenchnoodle · 04/12/2022 08:06

it's created multiple threads here, thus advertising revenue for Mumsnet.

God not this again

It's important to keep talking about it and keep it on the public agenda so the damage to the country is not forgotten and hopefully at some point we can rejoin.

HarvestThyme · 04/12/2022 08:09

It's rendered the UK politically irrelevant. I suppose some people might consider that a positive.

HelpMeCope85 · 04/12/2022 08:05

That might be the case but we are hopeless at protecting our border so in reality what has been the benefit?

It’s not easy to do. I don’t know the maritime laws but but seems tricky. Although I don’t know how Australia does it. They have a Labor gov now but no switch on migrant policy. Starmer seems to be talking about focusing on workers here than immigrants (a missed opportunity imo).

But what will drive it is public, atm we’re not there but as citizens demand it things change - Aus is a good example.

Anyway there’s another Brexit thread running with same theme and a bit early for more of same but I agree with pp it keeps mn running.

At the time the papers were certainly stating lack of red tape here due to brexit meant it all happened quicker than in the EU. Not correct?

@AgnesNaismith no, unfortunately not. There’s special licences (marketing authorisations) required for each country in order to sell medicines to other countries and there’s a few ways to obtain these. It’s all very complicated. In fact being in Europe would be easier for the U.K. they have made it harder by leaving. They still follow the old procedures right now as far as I am aware.
And whilst they may say “oh this is great we can regulate ourselves etc” there are still a lot of hoops to jump through and I know I would rather have the EU regulations in play to protect the U.K.

RampantIvy · 04/12/2022 08:20

Um…….. dark blue passport?

I'm struggling to understand why the colour of passport is so important TBH. I couldn't care less what colour it is.

Brexit has caused so many headaches at work. We have branches of our company in Ireland and now there is so much more red tape because we can't just transfer stock to Ireland. It is classed as an export and incurs extra admin and expense.

Not having to see Nigel Farage on the tv as much?

Every cloud has a silver lining!

nottodaytomorrow · 04/12/2022 08:25

Having full control over our borders to stop all the immigrants coming over on boats

Oh Blush

Thanks for taking the time @Cristmasshmismas new info for me and again I wonder how they get away with the lies!

MintJulia · 04/12/2022 08:27

I'm no longer having my pay cut or my job at threat by being outsourced to an agency in Hungary.

My pay rose last year, and this, for the first time in about a decade.

Stopandlook · 04/12/2022 07:56

Um…….. dark blue passport?

They are nicer, to be fair

Schmoana · 04/12/2022 08:28

At the time of development we were still in the EU

Plus fullfact.org/health/coronavirus-vaccine-brexit/

Another Tory lie they keep repeating - Sunak even repeated it last week at PMQs and went unchallenged

nottodaytomorrow · 04/12/2022 08:29

All the doctors, nurses, surgeons and consultants that came here and stole all our jobs have gone home so now everyone who was unemployed because they couldn't get said jobs are working. Same for care workers and fruit pickers....

Oh Blush

Cristmasshmismas · 04/12/2022 08:29

@AgnesNaismith not a complete lie as such just a big twist on words possibly?😆

Parky04 · 04/12/2022 08:30

My DB would disagree. He earns a lot more money post Brexit. He is no longer being undercut by European workers. This was his only reason why he voted for Brexit and who could blame him. Me personally, no benefits at all, I voted remain, but I'm happy for DB.

Beanbagtrap · 04/12/2022 08:31

My understanding is that a lot of finance people like the deregulation which will make them lots of money.

Hooverphobe · 04/12/2022 08:31

Repeats on MN. No need to develop new content when you can just quack on week after week, month after month, year after year.

IAmTi · 04/12/2022 08:33

It's stopped people moaning about wanting to leave the EU I guess. But no. Can't think of anything.

Ilovemycatalot · 04/12/2022 08:34

No more slave labour from abroad. Employers are having to be more competitive with what they pay as there are loads more job vacancies around and people can refuse to work for dire wages. Of course the flip side is there are loads of unfilled vacancies as people don’t want to work for crap money and work conditions anymore.

Ylvamoon · 04/12/2022 08:34

The cost of living crisis is hitting us harder than our EU neighbours?

Oh, sorry its a negative point. 😳

LegodOut · 04/12/2022 08:35

The new rules banning the export of live animals for fattening and slaughter has only been possible post-Brexit.

Farmer friends say that Brexit has meant an increased focus on conservation in farmland management.

I'm an ardent remainer BTW, but desperate to see any positives that there are...

I think moaning about rejoining has surpassed that though ;

Nope it was a huge, expensive decision at the worst time. I do find it mildly amusing watching family members who voted for Brexit argue that it disrupts their travelling Europe as freely as they used to. Duuuh. I even know fellow Europeans who migrated here who STILL voted for it. Hypocrisy - hate it.

Don't forget all the Brits living in Spain who voted for Brexit. Absolute total idiots.
