To think no one can name a single positive benefit of Brexit

Just that really. I'm genuinely curious. There seems to be increasing coverage and evidence of the harm and cost of Brexit. Can anyone point to a positive benefit?

Well I’ll take this as a joke I suppose

Take it however you want, it’s a free country (now).

It’s hard to tell these days.

Gotta love your posts on this thread. 👌🏼

Why so aggro about joke posts? Bit odd but I’ll leave you to it.

What is the point of threads like this? There was another one the same only a week or two ago. Brexit happened, get over it.

So interesting that those who voted for 'freedom' now want to stop people talking about it.

rumship · 04/12/2022 09:22

Watching remainders have mental breakdowns and still to this day apparently. 🤣

Or smugly watching Brexit backers realise what a mistake they made!

MarshaBradyo · 04/12/2022 11:52

If people are regretting it why won’t a party change tack now?

It could be a further vote winner

Not likely to be Tories obviously but Labour could

SerendipityJane · 04/12/2022 11:59

If people are regretting it why won’t a party change tack now?

Because the Tory party has been captured by the far-right. Look haw quickly the PM was told what he can and can't do by them.

As for Labour, when have they ever been stupid enough to take advantage of an open goal when they can argue over what game they are playing ? Although in this case, their staggering incompetence - like a stopped clock - appears to have coincided with a period when the media simply hasn't got the bandwidth to demonise them and keep the Tories in line.

The thing that no one has really mentioned so far is the Reform UK proposal to bring in PR and dump the Lords. If that gets to be official policy then hell - I'd vote for them with a peg over my nose. I'm hoping the Tories nick that policy to stay in power since they've become the Britains Got Talent party des nos jours

Getting the vaccine developed, approved and distributed more efficiently?

Not that anyone could have foreseen that when voting.

otherwise…no?

Nope

I think if any positives are there they won’t show itself for a long time.

I have this feeling that we’re moving into a new era where borders will become important. I think the earth will become more and more unstable politically and when large swathes of people start moving the European Union will start to break up with countries demanding to be able to defend their borders. At that point we’ll have already ironed out our creases and might think to ourselves thank god we got out ten years ago and are somewhat insulated from the upheaval.

Our borders are less secure though? People weren't travelling in their thousands via boat every day before Brexit was finalised because prior to then they could be turned straight back.

We've got no real defence of the English Channel.

@Orangepolentacake I could equally say "just use the right bit of the forum"

I'm only irritated because I have read pretty much the exact same thread three times already this month. It's tedious.

Gosh, if only there was someway not to read the threads! It's so terribly hard that we are forced to open and read them all, even the tedious ones, isn't it? It would be so much better if we could just not open the clearly labelled ones we weren't interested in, rather than to have to keep posting that other people shouldn't be talking about things we want them not to......

wackamole · 04/12/2022 12:02

Yes, I have some!

  1. The UK can now unilaterally close its airspace to flights from selected countries of origin. This was done in February when the UK did close its airspace to Russian flights 24 hours before the EU and USA.
  2. The UK is no longer bound by EU VAT parameters, which means that it can eliminate VAT altogether on products such as tampons, and that the NI, Scottish, and Welsh Governments/Executives could potentially set their own VAT levels in the future.

I had one most about minimum alcohol pricing, but Ireland's done it now so I guess it was possible all along.

Rishi Sunak, if you're reading, it seems the position of Minister of State for Brexit Opportunities and Government Efficiency has been vacant since September. I am available to do the job for a very good rate; however I will need to telecommute 100% of the time and to be paid in Euro. (Or USD, if you have any left.)

WorriedMutha · 04/12/2022 08:05

Brexit is destroying the Tory party. That's a heck of a fucking benefit.

They always tear themselves apart over Europe. They did in the 70s and 90s when they were last voted out and Cameron called the referendum in the first place terrified of defections to UKIP.

Hellsmovie · 04/12/2022 12:05

Quicker vaccine deployment

Better control on our borders (like many other countries do)

not having to follow EU legislation unless we want it.

Abilitie to make our own trade deals

I'm sure theres more I cant think of at the minute

User135644 · 04/12/2022 12:08

Ilovemycatalot · 04/12/2022 08:34

No more slave labour from abroad. Employers are having to be more competitive with what they pay as there are loads more job vacancies around and people can refuse to work for dire wages. Of course the flip side is there are loads of unfilled vacancies as people don’t want to work for crap money and work conditions anymore.

Service standards are appalling from health care to hospitality as you can't get the staff.

stuckandfedup · 04/12/2022 12:10

Quicker vaccine deployment nope, that was another Brexit lie

Better control on our borders (like many other countries do) haha, more small boats than ever before and lack of immigration is crippling many of our industries

not having to follow EU legislation unless we want it. we proposed and made most of that EU legislation, and btw which bits were so awful anyway?

Abilitie to make our own trade deals All of which so far, without exception, are appalling compared to what we had in the EU.

I'm sure theres more I cant think of at the minute Keep thinking

User135644 · 04/12/2022 12:11

SlagathaChristie · 04/12/2022 08:49

Not being controlled by the EU. I voted remain, but have since changed my mind.

More control for a parliament not fit for purpose instead, including a House of Lords full of unelected cronies.

At least the EU gave money to poorer areas and regions. I'm not a lover of the EU but I couldn't list a load of terrible things they've done to the UK, I could certainly give a long list of bad things the Tories have done (or Labour).

Ivyonafence · 04/12/2022 12:13

Weren't you meant to get a new hospital every week or something? The UK must be covered in them.

Florenz · 04/12/2022 12:15

User135644 · 04/12/2022 12:08

They can't get the staff because they don't pay good enough wages. There are not and never have been "Jobs British people don't WANT to do". Pay a high enough wage and people will apply for the job, even be prepared to relocate for it.

Mushroo · 04/12/2022 12:18

I hate Brexit, the only positives are:

  • you can claim your VAT back when you go shopping in Europe. (I bought a long champ bag in Paris and got 20% off essentially).
  • VAT wise we can now choose what to apply the zero rate to, so there is now a zero rate on tampons and installation of energy saving materials in homes.

(can you tell I work in tax 😂). They are the only examples I can think of that are tangible. The whole thing is a farce.

@WorriedMutha
Indeed, ironic since the only reason the idiot Cameron called the referendum was to put the issue to bed and unite the Tories

Absolutely. I hope that if there is a hell, he ends up there.

SerendipityJane · 04/12/2022 12:26

not having to follow EU legislation unless we want it.

So what Euro legislation aren't we going to follow that will encourage more trade and exports ? The new USB-UK charging connector ?

Well I agree with this, on many things. Especially no chance Tories will do it and media don’t have bandwidth to do more than attack them atm

I reckon this is a time where the electorate and the media are more fed up with Tories than they have been for a while. It’s the right time to put a bigger reverse in manifesto the polls are so stark.

Labour won’t though because they want utter safety for votes - easy but pointless (and possibly detrimental) private school issue, abolishing HoL which I don’t agree with since hearing speeches on Maternity Act and probably a few other low key things.

The great sadness imo is that whilst they do this U.K. doesn’t get a chance to change tack and we are locked in for another five years.

Vaccine roll out - there was nothing to stop any member of the EU doing what we did, and many did.

Borders - so formal customs control is way way harder and the channel crisis hardly existed prior to brexit.

Any one wishing to trade with the EU will still have to follow EU rules.

Trade deals - hormone treated beef, yum

Have you actually turned on the news in the last 3 years?

They always tear themselves apart over Europe. They did in the 70s and 90s when they were last voted out and Cameron called the referendum in the first place terrified of defections to UKIP.

If the Tory party are scared their core voters are susceptible to fascists, it doesn't say much about their values, does it ?

As I (well, Ben Franklin maybe) said. They sold their liberty for security and now have neither.

I look forward to their realisation that their electoral future may well depend on PR. Since Farage and fans are starting to push the narrative that the reason Brexit failed is that our broken electoral system allowed remainers to be elected instead of a swathe of mini-me Farages, Tices and Yaxley -Lennons.
