To think MN has a race problem and it’s getting worse

1000 replies

MovingOutofZone2 · 03/12/2022 04:16

Posters say incredibly offensive, often outright racist things and MN lets them stand as it’s a ‘difference of opinion’ and that’s fine. Other posters complain about this and MN deletes said complaints as they are ‘personal attacks’ and that isn’t fine.

Then we have mods wandering in and going ‘let’s have peace and love’, as though ‘both sides’ need to calm down. No, we need to stop placating racists.

I’m not going to give examples as this will get taken down as a TAAT, but I cannot be the only person to be fed up with all this. MN needs to do something about the racism, race baiting and general cultural ignorance. Unless the site is ONLY meant to cater to white people and, even then, I firmly believe that most posters of any race don’t want to see all that ugliness.

It’s getting to the stage where, as a Black person, I’m steeling myself before I log on. And knowing that half the time I report a comment, I won’t even get a token acknowledgement. This isn’t right. It wasn’t always like this.

@GrinAndVomit I agree with you.

Police might not be but social workers are. Teachers are. Care workers are. Council workers are.
I don’t want to say too much about my own personal link with this but it was absolutely an environment of fear and the heavy implication you would/ could lose your job if you voiced any concerns.

And so it was left to the whistleblowers. The race angle was simply used to shut down discussion of the problem. That doesn’t mean that it was the real problem - the real issue was the some people were indifferent to the whole thing and they didn’t want it to come to light because they’d look negligent.

Jayne Senior made complaints against 30 different police officers.

@GrinAndVomit I agree with you.

It’s so frustrating and heartbreaking.

MovingOutofZone2 · 03/12/2022 15:56

Mirabai · 03/12/2022 15:39

It’s not just the mods team though this kind of issue is top down.

Iirc a poster on the Black MNers forum was in contact with Justine on the matter but she was not receptive and nothing has changed.

Justine needs to acknowledge the problem and engage all MN staff in racial awareness training including herself. MN needs to specify in the Ts&Cs that racism will not be tolerated which includes microaggressions (and threads that pretend to be about sex offences but are really just an excuse to air racism). Right now - they don’t get it at all.

I wasn’t aware that Justine had been contacted about this. And still nothing’s being done. How utterly depressing. Unsurprising, but depressing.

And Jayne Senior and Angie Heal were threatened by the police (Heal worked for the police originally)

Frabbits · 03/12/2022 15:58

I do think the moderation on here is pretty poor, perhaps due to lack of time or just a poor understanding of what good moderation is.

Far too often you see posts deleted that are challenging hateful statements and the original actually offensive post is left up because the person who put the original statement up gets all upset that they are challenged and hammers the report button, and the default response is always Postdeletedheresalinktoourguidelines without any thought given as to context.

This is how this conversation gets shut down.

The males who perpetrated those rapes did not commit those rapes because of their race. They were predatory males, and as predatory males, used whatever means necessary to shut down any investigation or questioning

Jimmy Saville got away with his crimes because of his celebrity status. He didn’t commit the crimes because he was a celebrity. He was just a predator with a good cover.

A little balance here to the claim that it is most likely the white men demographic who groom young girls

Who is shutting down the conversation? I agree with you.

I am saying that the police and council services who claimed they could not speak out for fear of appearing racist are making excuses. The real reason was misogyny, indifference and corruption. Misogyny is at the root of the Rotherham case, on both sides.

The teachers - social workers were told to keep quiet because the race issue was too sensitive - that was simply a tool to shut them up.

Were you there? I grew up there, had classmates who were victims of this and then worked there and saw pupils be victims of this. Let me tell you that the fear is real.

Really? Any evidence? Because here is some actual evidence counter to your claims.

The following year, a report on child sexual exploitation in Rotherham found no evidence of children’s social care staff being influenced by the demographics of perpetrators, but said there was a “perceived message” from council leaders to “downplay” ethnicity.

@LoisLane66 Megan is mixed race race so it's 50/50. The truth is sometimes as ANY mixed race person the black community will say to you as mixed race or you are not black enough.

Regarding the white community mixed race people are NOT part of the white community. People claim they thought she was white.... I mean really? You can clearly see she is mixed race and uses hair straightens along with a good hairdresser.

Race is complex even white women can have kids with a black man and STILL be racist.

But that's another tail........

In defense of people like me who first thought she was white: her skin colour isn't that much different from many mediterrean white people.

As for hair straightening, I just learnt that from your post. How on earth could someone see that her hair is straightened?

I’m not disputing that the fear was real. The corruption was real.

What I am saying is that the tool used to silence your friends - the implication that these things couldn’t be reported due to racial sensitivity - was bogus that’s all.

It was the result of a bullying and corrupt culture within the council and the police.

Exactly. The council leaders and the police between them shut down all concerns and reports very effectively over a period.

GrinAndVomit · 03/12/2022 16:19

I give in. So many posters with zero experience of living and working in those towns seem to know so much better than someone who was born, grew up and worked there and other professionals who have bravely spoken out.

I’ve looked back and I can see we’re talking at complete cross purposes.

In your first post that I replied to, by “professionals” I thought you were referring to the police and council leaders who were the ones who ignored and blocked the concerns and reports over a long period.

In a later post you said ‘“teachers”and “social workers” - absolutely they were the ones repeatedly reporting the problems and either getting ignored or threatened.

My point was simply that the race angle was used by the people at the top to shut people up. The reason the police didn’t follow up on all the reports was not fear of seeming racist but simply indifference and worse.

As I said Jayne Senior reported 30 different officers.

@MovingOutofZone2 Jeez, just move on.

But no, you're on a campaign now and will shout and harass and shout some more until people do what you tell them - because you're all righteous.

This is what people don't like and it causes them to shut down and not engage at all - because of the shouting and often being unable to do anything right in the eyes of some.

Leave the mods alone and just move on. A couple of posts you don't like isn't going to ruin your life.

But it’s still happening (across a number to ethnicities) and the police are still ignoring it.

How long are we going to give police a free pass?

And the idea that police are scared of these men is ridiculous. These men have no power, the police have all the power, they just don’t see the victims as worthy. As Mirabai says, it’s misogyny.

I think what she’s referring to, and I misinterpreted her words, is the professionals - such as teachers and social workers - who tried to speak out and were shut down and genuinely in fear of losing their jobs and more.

The police - other than people like Angie Heal - ignored it and are still ignoring it.
