I’m out tonight in my local village which is about 4kms from my house along a very rural road with no streetlights or pavements. Just met some friends for a few drinks. My husband dropped me and now he’s at home with his father watching sports, and they’ve had a few beers so the plan was that I’d get a local taxi home.

My two friends live in the next town over (about 20mins away from the village, 24kms from my house) and there’s a bus that runs through the village and their town, but goes the opposite way to my house so I can’t take the bus.

There’s literally one taxi around here. It’s very rural. We don’t have Uber, Lynx, Deliveroo etc, we’re so rural. The village is tiny- a shop, two pubs, and a takeaway.

So tonight, I walked my friends to the bus (last bus of the night so they had to get that one) and then stood outside the pub waiting for my prebooked taxi. After a while, the taxi driver rang to say he’s broken down and can’t get to me.

I tried taxis from the town my friends live in, but they won’t come out this far.

The takeaway delivers within 5km and we’ve used them before.

I’m thinking if I go in and order, pay the delivery fee, offer the driver a decent tip, he’ll drive me and my food home.

Could that work?

Their insurance won't cover it. Only the chow mein or whatever it is.

EarlofShrewsbury · 02/12/2022 22:13

They might not due to insurance (I deliver pizzas) but its worth asking.

Unsureofitall · 02/12/2022 22:14

Oh I so hope this works out for you. Good thinking!

TimeAtTheBar · 02/12/2022 22:18

We got picked up by a delivery driver once when we were standing at the bus stop in the dark and rain! Me and my DH. He was going into town anyway he said. We tried to tip him/pay him and he was having none of it. Just one of those random acts of kindness.

Anyway; it’s worth a try! Good luck. I would t fancy walking home in the dark with no path.

NEmama · 02/12/2022 22:19

It's worth a try. We've done it before

Aria999 · 02/12/2022 22:19

Good luck!

You could ask the taxi driver if his breakdown vehicle would give you a ride. They normally have room for 2!

Otherwise I guess use your phone as a torch and walk it.

Changingplace · 02/12/2022 22:20

It’s worth an ask - hope you get home ok.

livealittlemore · 02/12/2022 22:21

Worth giving it a try. Is there no one else you can ask to come pick you up? Friends? Neighbours? Hope you get home okay.

Cheesuswithallama · 02/12/2022 22:22

What did the pub say? They might know someone who is willing

PuppyMonkey · 02/12/2022 22:32

Have you rung your DH?

TrotOnMinty · 02/12/2022 22:49

I’m on my way home in the delivery car! I have some crispy chili beef and spring rolls. They threw in a can of Coke because they felt a bit sorry for me.

We have to drop another order first 😂

Amazing, well done OP!

Snowfalling · 02/12/2022 22:52

I love a happy ending! Thanks for the update op, this has cheered me up no end.

AccioChocolate · 02/12/2022 22:53

You're lucky it wasn't a moped!

AccioChocolate · 02/12/2022 22:53

You're lucky it wasn't a moped!

Would never do where I live. Quads with working sheeldogs on the back, and battered Land Rovers are more the scene!

No, figured there was no point as he wouldn’t be able to drive to get me, and I didn’t want to panic him unnecessarily. I’m more of a critical thinker than he is and he’s not the best in a tiny mini-crisis.

The delivery guy gave me the prawn crackers that the last house didn’t want (their order seemed to be two chicken chow mein, one veg chow mein, and a large satay sauce- feels like a waste of a Chinese), so DH is munching on those now.

We did this once but we did know the takeaway company very well

Do you involuntarily put your left arm across the food on the passenger seat when you’re taking a turn?

My driver tonight did that once and then muttered “sorry, you’re not a bag”.

That's fabulous. Friends and I were once returned to our holiday accommodation in the back of a pub's fish van when no taxis were available. It was a bit whiffy but did the job. Good thinking!

I’m dying! Brilliant!

I think you’ve been extremely resourceful, OP, good job!

We used to ask a very regular delivery driver to pick up fags and chocolate, way back in the day.

Changingplace · 03/12/2022 07:28

This is brilliant, top work OP I’m glad you got home safe!
