I’m out tonight in my local village which is about 4kms from my house along a very rural road with no streetlights or pavements. Just met some friends for a few drinks. My husband dropped me and now he’s at home with his father watching sports, and they’ve had a few beers so the plan was that I’d get a local taxi home.

My two friends live in the next town over (about 20mins away from the village, 24kms from my house) and there’s a bus that runs through the village and their town, but goes the opposite way to my house so I can’t take the bus.

There’s literally one taxi around here. It’s very rural. We don’t have Uber, Lynx, Deliveroo etc, we’re so rural. The village is tiny- a shop, two pubs, and a takeaway.

So tonight, I walked my friends to the bus (last bus of the night so they had to get that one) and then stood outside the pub waiting for my prebooked taxi. After a while, the taxi driver rang to say he’s broken down and can’t get to me.

I tried taxis from the town my friends live in, but they won’t come out this far.

The takeaway delivers within 5km and we’ve used them before.

I’m thinking if I go in and order, pay the delivery fee, offer the driver a decent tip, he’ll drive me and my food home.

Could that work?

Yes good out-of-the-box thinking.
Did exactly the same once, the driver thought it was funny and every time afterwards that we'd phone for an order they'd always ask if we wanted a lift again!

Do you involuntarily put your left arm across the food on the passenger seat when you’re taking a turn?

My driver tonight did that once and then muttered “sorry, you’re not a bag”.

Hehehehe

Glad you got home safe

This is the most out of the box thinking I have ever seen, I'm so impressed. I'm hoping dds have the same level of problem solving skills.

I do delivery driving from time to time and did say no to this once. It was a couple of very drunk men and I just didn't feel comfortable with it. Glad it worked for you though.

I live in a very similar village (except we only have one pub, you practically live in a metropolis 😂) and the takeaway would have definitely done the same, it’s different from living in a town or city. Actually, I could probably have just knocked on someone’s door or put a post on the village FB page and someone would have given me a lift home. Love village life!

Good idea! Glad it worked out for you.

I probably would have just walked but I like your thinking.

I had had two glasses of wine, and a cocktail! I seem to make better decisions when I’m very tired, or a little tipsy. It’s a running joke in the family. I can only do cryptic crosswords when I’m exhausted. It’s like my brain doesn’t have time for any of the other stuff and just hyper focuses.

Walking really isn’t an option around here. It would be risky during the day, but completely dangerous at night.

The red arrow shows a section of the road I’d have to walk. It’s unlit, narrow, and no footpath. The brown areas are marshes, and the black bodies of water you see are flooded, very deep, decommissioned quarries.

This will work, yeah?

This is brilliant creative thinking 10/10

Reminds me of a few years ago when we got a lift off a tyre replacement van in Bristol to a show as our pre booked taxi never showed and as it was so busy there were no available taxis that wouldn't get us there too late. 🤣

I feel like you should keep this in reserve for any job interviews when you're asked how you got out of a sticky situation

Glittertwins · 03/12/2022 10:50

@crussont - a very good suggestion! I'm in awe of the quick thinking after drinking too!

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 03/12/2022 10:56

I’m dying! Brilliant!

You're dying? Really? 🙄

AccioChocolate · 03/12/2022 11:05

No, she's probably not literally dying. It's a saying that means she finds the situation quite entertaining.

I’m on my way home in the delivery car! I have some crispy chili beef and spring rolls. They threw in a can of Coke because they felt a bit sorry for me.

We have to drop another order first 😂

This has to be the best post I've read on here Grin

OldTinHat · 03/12/2022 12:42

This is bloody brilliant OP! What amazing thinking - I'd have just sat on the pavement and sobbed! You deserve a gold star 🌟

Roarsomemore · 03/12/2022 16:48

Daisy May Cooper, could we have this as an occurrence in next series of AIBU please?

Oysterbabe · 03/12/2022 17:01

I used to do this often as a student. Taxi was £5. Delivery was free. Driver was always happy to give a lift and I got a curry 😄
