to think Kanye West's racism is going to lead to an increase in violence against Jews?

Firstly, I am Jewish, no connection to Israel, I'm not Israeli (not that I need to qualify my post with that) and have lived in the UK all my life.

So, after his recent rantings about loving Hitler, Nazis and the holocaust (torontosun.com/entertainment/celebrity/i-like-hitler-kanye-west-doubles-down-on-hate-speech-on-alex-jones-infowars-show)

I'm feeling very scared and scared for my kids, especially reading recent threads like this:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/secondary/4662884-kanye-wests-harmful-views-tackling-antisemitism-at-school

Kanye is very influential and popular with the younger generation and my Jewish children are already getting more racist comments said to their faces without any fear of retribution. I am genuinely scared for their physical safety. Jews shouldn't have to live in fear, its 2022 ffs not the 1930s!

It’s called hate speech.

LondonWolf · 02/12/2022 16:41

I think he's trying to ruin Kim Kardashian by association. I think a big punishment for Kim for leaving him is a big part of this.

EgonsShell · 02/12/2022 16:29

@PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog Yes, this. There was another thread quite recently where many posters proudly declared their antiracist credentials, yet for them Jews were fair game to be mocked and disbelieved. Their racism was a lot more veiled than the more explicit rightwing variety or extreme cases like Kanye.

they’re not anti racists then

I wish people wouldn’t compare racism and anti semitism in this way. Yes I can imagine a teacher doing the same about racism, because it happens all the time.
Racism in my experience is far more acceptable socially than antisemitism. You only have to look at threads where an op has experienced racism and they are repeatedly told maybe that isn’t the issue or any other excuse. I’ve yet to see that on a thread about anti semitism, I’m not saying it’s never happened.

Check out the Baddie thread then from last week because that is exactly how Jews were treated on that thread! And how they've been getting treated increasingly over the last few years. Antisemitism is racism. 6 million were killed because of their non-Aryan race.

There's currently a thread on Lady Hussey's behaviour where I've made the same point, except in relation to anti-black racism and how it's repeatedly minimised by white people who like to tell black people that they are exaggerating and imagining things. A quick look at the very online left on Twitter will show you how Jews are treated with exactly the same kind of language and accusations; that there's no issue, they're making it up. The 'It's a Scam' crowd in particular.

Hate and extremism in all its disguises is getting worse. I fear for the future but I suppose I won't be here to see it at its worst. I'm not sure how I should feel about that but nothing I can do about it.

Unless you are Jewish @Testingprof you would have no idea how much Jew hate gets minimised or excused and how socially acceptable Jew hate is (in fact it is so mainstream in some areas that nobody bats an eyelid as per the comments my children received with much nonchalance and no fear of being punished) - and with regards to racism being more socially acceptable than Jew hate, there were at least three threads decrying the racism experienced by Ngozi Fulani when I posted earlier but not a peep about Kanye West's comments about Jews, even though it was a twelve hours later.

Why has he been allowed to get away with such racism for so long, that is the question that needs answering

You can help by calling it out when you see it and by supporting other brave people who call it out. Antisemitism has no place in our society!

Flowerytray · 02/12/2022 17:15

Awful and I think he should be arrested for inciting hatred and racism. It makes me very sad that your children are experiencing this.

willstarttomorrow · 02/12/2022 17:46

You are right OP, this thread is an example of how antisemitism continues to be minimised and dismissed. It is not an 'either, or' situation. Marginalisation and hatred of any group of people is not okay. Antisemitism is so ingrained throughout many societies, the portrayal of Jewish people in films for example. The casual 'jokes' about money, being a club etc. The continued need for Jewish schools, welfare centres etc to need security is scary in 2022. Many attending are culturally Jewish- just doing every day things everyone does within a context of a shared history and values. Considering quite recent history and that you can visit several European cities where the once large population has been almost wiped out, it is worrying.

The Palestine situation gives people an excuse. Jewish = support because people only do black and white. To offer balance- the same people do not really Islam. We have a large community where I live from many different backgrounds with different ways. Whilst the majority get it, a significant number do not. But it is the same with Eastern Europeans ( hard workers/alcoholic scroungers or most lately Albanian druglords).

So I can say the same back to you about racism. Unless you are black you have no idea. In the majority of cases within my DS’ primary school the perpetrators of racism were Jewish children and there were no consequences from some pretty nasty incidents. What was shocking to me is the parents would shout about how their children would not be punished as x isn’t racist and the affected child just needed to grow a thicker skin. Like I said I wish people wouldn’t compare as it just leads to pointless arguments about who has it worse.

I agree with @AnElegantChaos that anti-semitism is racism and actually we should work together to fight against it not justify why one group has it worse than the other.

Valeriekat · 02/12/2022 18:27

He is mentally ill and has been for some time now.
His behaviour has been reinforced and accepted by those around him for some time now.
If he had been female no doubt he would have been hospitalised by now.

Endlesssummer2022 · 02/12/2022 18:43

I don’t think so as he has been showing signs of severe mental illness for some time and a lot of people realise he’s a deeply unwell person so don’t take him seriously . Look at how he was blaming slaves for slavery a while back. He’s very unwell.

Unfortunately because he’s a rich man, he’s been allowed to continue his conspiracies and ranting and raving. If he was a woman like Britney he would be under the same court order.

If I was Kim, I wouldn’t allow him to be alone with the kids as I think he has the potential to be one of those guys who murders the kids to get back at their ex. He’s deeply disturbed.

LlynTegid · 02/12/2022 18:48

I don't think the increase in anti-semitism is just from Kanye West, but each bit contributes. In the UK the attitude of the Home Secretary to the police which seems to me to suggest they should not be acting as much on anti-semitism and other racism on social media I think is a larger contributor.

It's only three years ago we had a Leader of the Opposition who would not act on anti-semitic comments, and only three months ago that we had a Prime Minister with a history of using racist language.

VladmirsPoutine · 02/12/2022 18:50

I too think this is to tarnish Kim Kardashian by association. That said, I don't think Kanye wields the kind of influence neccesary to make antisemitism acceptable. For a start he only lost his billionaire status and sponsorships when he turned to antisemitism - being that he'd made plenty of questionable statements about black people without much, if any, consequence. I don't think antisemitism is acceptable but I've seen far more people face consequences for antisemitism than any other form of racism. Someone upthread posted about Baddiel, he donned blackface for much of his career and now many years later when it's politically and financially expedient to to apologise speaks volumes.

fancyacuppatea · 02/12/2022 18:51

YANBU.

He is a complete and utter knob, tho.

VladmirsPoutine · 02/12/2022 18:51

The curious thing though is that jews felt that Corbyn had all but condoned antisemitism but couldn't quite explain why Johnson's book which was replete with antisemitic tropes was somehow acceptable. I've never been able to figure that one out.

Ah yes, I know this is going to sound completely crazy, I mean absolutely mad!! But I would guess, at an estimate though I'm not quite sure, but the acceptable amount of times to do blackface is none. As in zero. I realise that sounds crazier than unicorns shitting in the woods but just hear me out.

HRTQueen · 02/12/2022 18:59

oh course YANBU op I’m sorry to read of your children’s awful experience

Influential or not his rants gain a lot of publicity so in a sense he is still influential

I think many view him as a man who is unwell and somewhat pity him along with being angry at the views he is spouting

when racism is headline news it often leads to racists being more vocal but also more people cali g then our
