The Lady Hussey racism thing

Tiiiiiiiiiiired · 01/12/2022 10:58

I am really conflicted about this.

If went to live in Japan (I did live there for 3 years several years ago) I would be expected to be asked about where I'm from because I don't look Japanese (and in fact I was asked many times! I didn't mind at all, it was my choice to be in Japan and I knew I didn't look japanese). If I chose to stay in that country and have children, I'd expect my children would be asked the same, and their children and that although they would be Japanese by birth, I would hope they would be happy to talk about their heritage and where they are from and not mind being asked why they don't look Japanese and what the history is. I wouldnt think it racist and wouldn't want such questions to be stopped because we only learn from others, and about others, by talking and feeling safe to ask questions.

So why in the UK does everyone have to be sooo careful with what they say? This woman has a non English name, was wearing some non western clothing, as was asked about her heritage. Why is this abuse?

We need to stop being so sensitive and allow dialogue.

The person who "ruined" Camilla's event is in fact the woman who posted her grievance publically on twitter instead of taking her complaint through the proper and appropriate Palace channels first like an adult.

But the incident happened in the palace, with a representative of the palace. She’s supposed to approach her aggressor and expect to be treated fairly? That’s like calling the police when the police have attacked you.

PetraBP · 01/12/2022 18:55

Surely the fact that NF was there as a representative of a charity for women of African and Caribbean heritage (only) meant that it was legitimate to ask her about her heritage? Or is that a micro aggression?

It doesn't matter who NF was representing. She should not be on the receiving end of racism. Lady SH's behaviour was racist, offensive and unacceptable according to the people who know what happened.

Stop minimising and dismissing the racism that happened. It makes you sound like a racist.😦

thehorsehasnowbolted · 01/12/2022 19:04

Funny, no one ever asks me about my white German heritage when I wear my hair in a Dirndl.

Have you worn your dress to Buckingham Palace yet?

Did you just assume my ethnicity? 😕

Exactly

Let's not forget that this is the Palace that specifically said in the 1960s the only roles they would recruit people of colour into was domestic roles, not clerical roles etc

They don't exactly have a spotless reputation here

More coming out, online support does seem to have turned somewhat. 'Sistah space' not directly invited but included with 'Safe Space uk' so clearly the staff wouldn't have known who she was. NF seems to have an anti rf agenda as evidenced by her tweets. I really hope she hasn't caused any distress to the victims her charity supports

They'd better tighten up their procedures next time to avoid these kinds of incidents

PetraBP · 01/12/2022 19:10

It may be the case that she adopted a traditional African name as it’s often the case that the English surnames of people from the Caribbean are actually inherited from the name of the family who enslaved them.

I can understand that.

Why would anyone want to carry the surname of someone who literally purported to own their ancestors and had the power of life and death over them?

It has been corroborated by witnesses and the palace has accepted it.

Why are you so keen to cast doubt on the veracity of the reports?

I’m not trying to say that SH wasn’t racist; I’m just surprised that someone could remember ever single word said in a conversation.
As per my original post why on earth would you attend an event if you were black where you though the organisers were racist?

Ah, so there may have been an agenda there?

Ah, so there may have been an agenda there?

Once again.

If I speak out about men because of male violence it is not okay for a man to then attack me.

If the victim has spoken out about rasicm in the royal family it is not okay for one of their representatives to make racist remarks to her.

You can say there is an agenda but the simplest way for the Palace to avoid this 'agenda' would have been for one of their representatives not to have been racist

We don't know what may have happened in this case. The woman might be mixed race and bear her father's surname, hence nothing to do with what you mention. What about when people change their first names also?

It's actually her husbands surname.

Squeezita
I think we’re going round in circles because the mirror article interface is so bad. I’m referring to Ngozi’s dress, not headress.

No need to go round in circles - the Independent's headline is pretty clear;

Charity boss says her authentic African attire led to ‘attack’ from palace aide.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 01/12/2022 19:33

Attack?

thehorsehasnowbolted · 01/12/2022 19:34

So nothing to do with slavery then. And the first name?

Attack?

That's obviously Ngozi’s opinion - we were discussing 'attire'.

PickyEaters · 01/12/2022 19:43

Yes, Lady H could have worded her questions in a more PC way.
Equally Ms F could have stopped being deliberately obtuse and answered the question (I believe she knew very well what was being asked).

The allegation is that Lady H was trying to "put her in her place". Equally why would one not assume that she was genuinely interested in where Ms F's "people" were from.

Remember, offense is something that you take; i.e., it is your choice whether to be offended by something or not.

Marlene. According to Twitter. So I assume the name her parents chose for her.

How’s this even relevant? It is not for someone to simply choose to take offence or not. It’s for the other person to behave and not to make remarks or act in a certain way.

Why should an organisation have to miss out on an important event for their charity just because the palace behaves this way towards black people? Pretty bad reflection on our country all this, really.

You are very keen to make this all about the victim, casting aspersions etc. You are on the wrong side here, whether for mischief or because you are racist yourself, not possible to know of course.
