The Jeremy Kyle Show. Middle class man shouts at poor people who aren’t terribly bright, for not being perfect humans. So pleased it ended.

On X Factor and BGT when they used to show ‘funny’ auditions of people who believed they had talent but really didn’t so got laughed at. They then brought them back for the final to do a humiliating routine live so they could be laughed at more.

Supernanny. Childless woman who can barely speak properly pulls lemon faces, tells parents they’re shit and Instills sudden and sharp changes in the child’s home where actual camera are focussing on them when they’re distraught and upset

Sun sea and suspicious parents. Mum and dad spying on their adult children from a rooftop in Greece whilst said child gets off with a stranger. CREEPY!

"ahh - the deoderant thing. Before lockdown, when our office was full to busting and the men in my team were spaying themselves several times a day"

I lived abroad for a while and was shocked to see people putting deodorant on in public when I came back. I'd forgotten about it!

The peace and quiet - if that’s your thing
Lower crime rates
More neighbourly spirit and generosity - when they’re not drink driving 😂
Normally a little neighbourhood group that organises loads like fete days and scarecrow days.
Just don’t get a lift back from the pub with anyone 🤣

Beautiful scenery,
Generally nice housing,
Families often live near relatives

Clearly my brain has fallen out. What are the ‘s’ and ‘r’ words?

I hate that I know this and I’m not going to write them but:

sp•••ic

People chose to go onto these?

The Jeremy Kyle Show. Nobody forced people to go onto it

X Factor and BGT. Nobody forced people to go onto it. Sorry to tell you but the large majority of those funny ones were scouted out and used for entertainment purposes. And defo nobody forced them back on for the final.

Friends, the TV show

It doesn't seem that long ago. Makes my generation look so old fashioned

I was just thinking about this earlier today, words that stil seemed acceptable in around the 80s in my childhood (with warning these might be upsetting for some people) - I remember people using 'half caste' for people with some black heritage and 'mongul' for people with Down Syndrome - and not intended insultingly, just as a descriptor.

Also that people used to laugh and joke about paedophiles as simply 'dirty old men', and just a bit of a joke and 'lucky' (if their targets were teenage girls). I remember the news stories about Bill Wyman dating 13 year old Patsy Smith and they were all 'Phwoar the lucky old devil' and not 'OMG this is appalling!' 😮

Though of course the 80s is ages ago now!

You post prompted me to google how the term ‘mongol’ to describe those with Downs came about. The term ‘mongoloid’ was first coined by German doctor Johann Blumenbach. He observed that children with Down's syndrome shared facial similarities with various indigenous populations described as the Mongolian race. The physician Langdon Down first characterized the syndrome that now bears his name, as a distinguishable form of mental disability, and in a later, more widely published report Down used the term ‘mongoloid’ in his characterisation of those with Down's syndrome. As you say, it wasn’t meant as an insult, and for a time it was accepted medical terminology.

I said this on another thread recently but I really do believe in 20 years time there will be an epidemic of children suing their parents and/or social media platforms for privacy invasion with these families who film their kids, wether they’re happy, sad or in pain, and stick it on social media. I think there will be a lot of reflecting on why adults did that and calls for the law to change. The likes of ever irritating LadBaby and his wife, who will seemingly do anything as long as they’re reaping views and money, in the name of being cool parents or whatever the hell they push. Even worse are the ones who make videos complaining about how annoying their kids are, and we can see their kids’ faces. Mark my words, these mummy and daddy influencers will be the future stately homes threads.

I hated watching these programs (but lived in a shared house). A lot of the participants had very low IQs and however much they may have chosen to take part it did feel incredibly exploitative. Yes a few were "in on the joke" but many more were not

SnackSizeRaisin

Electric bikes are the solution on lovely safe paths along river banks or disused railway lines: and Councils and government should be investing in these. Cycling is great, but not alongside powerful cars.

What does Jo Frost’s lack of children have to do with anything? It doesn’t make her any less qualified a nanny.

Totally agree
I’m childless but been a nanny for decades
carong for children in a compassionate and thoughtful child Centred way..
it’s an insult to childless women !!!!

Putting filler in your face/lips so that you look completely unnatural.

Definitely this!

Crikeyalmighty · 30/11/2022 20:18

Notices saying 'no blacks/no Irish' for room letting

People regularly having 2 or 3 pints and driving

Kids left in cars alone with pop and crisps whilst parents went and sat in the pub

Thegap · 30/11/2022 20:18

Porn, Only Fans and the likes Of Naked attraction. Why the fuck has it become normal to parade your bits to the world.

Chose...🤔

Unfortunately some of these people were vulnerable and wouldn’t necessarily have been able to realise the consequences.

And super nanny, the children couldn’t consent. They were used to make an entertainment programme.

But you must understand that while nobody was ‘forced’, ND and vulnerable people don’t have the same critical thinking to realise when something isn’t a good idea? And these shows not only were fine with that but they exploited that for comedy value

Thank God I'm not the only innocent here! I've been racking my brain.

Impregnating cows, eating their babies and drinking their breast milk.
it's so weird if you really think about it!

SweetSakura · 30/11/2022 20:20

FlissyPaps · 30/11/2022 19:44

Oh lighten the fuck up😂

All sorts went off in my area back in the 80’s 90’s.
Driving without a license, no seatbelts, about 6 kids crammed into the back seats. Health & safety was non-existent.

Legally seen as ok - absolutely not. Never said it was.
Socially seen as ok in the community and for the purpose of this thread - absolutely.

Maybe it's a class /wealth thing as I definitely don't recall anyone thinking this ok but I do admit I grew up in solidly middle class circles where most people were professionals.

Anyone fancy a sweet in the shape of a cigarette??

I remember eating those as a kid and we would all offer one up to each other copying our parents smoking. One child would say, fancy one? The other would say, sure don't mind if I do, do you have a light. Jesus wept. So wrong. I had totally forgotten about that. I can't even remember what they were called.

And the children already know they have to perform and put on a fake act as soon as the phone is pointing at them ..how will they grow up ???

Gwenhwyfar · 30/11/2022 20:21

"while nobody was ‘forced’, ND and vulnerable people don’t have the same critical thinking to realise when something isn’t a good idea?"

I'd think it was more to do with low education or low intelligence than being neuro-diverse, but you're right it's consent, but not informed consent. I think the same about many of Louis Theroux's programmes, excellent as they are. The subjects don't really realise how they'll be portrayed in the final programme.
