How often do you leave the house if you wfh?

I've found since wfh that I only leave the house to go to the shop.

Sometimes I don't cross the front door for days. I used to go for walks when we had a dog, but he passed away a few months ago. 😞 it feels sad and weird walking our usual route without him.

I don't have any kids so no school run etc. I feel like I have nowhere to go!

I can stay inside for days. I love being in my peaceful home.

LookingForInfo12 · 29/11/2022 22:12

Maybe volunteer to walk dogs for the Cinnamon Trust if you're missing the dog walking?
That would give you a reason to go out for a walk now and then

I WFH too and it's so easy to get into the routine of not leaving the house.
I tend to go to the supermarket about 9pm when it's quiet so in the winter I can spend days and days without actually going out in daylight!!

Squeezedsquash · 29/11/2022 22:16

I have nursery and school runs and try and walk around my boring bit of suburbia. Even if it’s cold and dark and raining like it was at 9pm tonight.

How long are some people's lunch breaks😂

As long as I want unless I have meetings!

Frazzled2207 · 29/11/2022 22:40

You need a new dog

we wfh but have kids so there is school runs and also various kids activity taxiing in the evenings. If it wasn’t for that and/or forcing ourselves out for walks (which we do do sometimes at lunchtime- no dog) it would be very easily to not go out almost at all, especially this time of year.

at least in summer we’d quite often sit in the garden at lunch or after work.

30 mins for me! I manage to make food and eat it, go to the toilet, make a hot drink and it's pretty much over

wincarwoo · 29/11/2022 22:50

I find a good podcast is the incentive I need to go out for a walk.

Bagzzz · 29/11/2022 22:57

Every day even to buy something really small. Good for my MH, probably not enough to make a difference for the physical.

FiveMins · 29/11/2022 23:01

I play tennis twice a week and go to the gym a couple of times and walk the dogs but only a short walk as they go out later. It is quite poor how rubbish I am in between work at moving.

Well, I would presume most people with have fixed projects or tasks to get done each day, or they have a fixed number of hours to work. I think it is pretty easy to imagine that people who might take 75mins break in the middle of the day start earlier or finish later. It's just nicer to walk when it is light, and, in truth, probably makes you more productive in the afternoon.
I'm not that disciplined any more but when we were walking each day, there didn't seem much point in doing it in the dark, if we could walk in the light.

It's not difficult to work out, surely ?

After wfh since 2009, this may be concerning to some but is very reassuring to me at least that it seems to be a relatively natural byproduct of wfh and restrospectively so as well. Before it was the norm and anecdotes like this were the norm, I thought something could be severely wrong with me for years! (Despite being generally confident, extroverted and comfortable in most environments & people).

Before covid though, I ensured I went out pretty much every day even just to the shops. Although it felt weird about how little it equated to compared to the massive majority rat-race norm pre-covid.

During covid (& intense relationship breakdown) I still wfh full time throughout and the situation massively compounded due to deliveries but am now getting back out there a lot more.

Can relate to pp re driving too; I’m a good driver and confident as I worked in field sales after Uni and drove 1k mile/week and always loved driving, and now drive a solid powerful car… but not driving as much (or at points for weeks 😬) really has an impact on anxiety which I could never previously empathise much with. All I can recommend is getting back in the saddle and persevering to push yourself to do just do it safe in the knowledge that you have the luxury of easing yourself in and not because of a necessary commute (although ironically I think that is probably half the reason the anxiety exists, because it has a luxury to) but maybe force yourself to go the best route even if it includes the junction/right hand turn and at least stop pandering to the fear and rewarding it with that “win”.

I can go a week without leaving the house, dh usually goes to the local shop if we need anything

isthisamistakeornot · 29/11/2022 23:20

I WFH most of the time but I go out every day without fail. I do school runs but also am often out in the evenings to meet friends and I go to toddler/kids activities on my days off. Plus just the usual shops/post office/to a cafe for lunch etc.

I’m fascinated by people who can go for days without leaving the house. I’d absolutely hate it. I’ve actually just got a new job which requires more time in the office and to me that’s a good thing!

I guess mostly it doesn't bother me - I pay a lot for my house and bills and I like it Grin
But on an average day (no children) I get up, get ready for work, start work at 8.45/9.30 depending on my shift. I then work until 6, exercise and shower which makes it 7.30pm ish. By the time I've cooked, eaten, washed up, and done stuff like laundry/changing bedding etc it's maybe 8.30pm and I'm ready to sit and watch some TV before bed. Repeat that 5 days a week! I can't take breaks from work except my allocated ones so no option to nip out midday or something

So kind of you to explain without being patronising as hell♥️
Forever grateful

CampervanKween · 29/11/2022 23:30

I joined a gym with my friend solely to get me out of the house. I do a body balance class every morning quite happily at home, and it's great wfh as kids are older so can come and go and I'm always here. But absolutely agree I could go days happily pottering around inside and I know its not good for me.

caringcarer · 29/11/2022 23:33

I'd second get another dog. It is not good for you to go days without fresh air.

HauntedPencil · 30/11/2022 08:14

Only to do the school run or drop kids to hobbies jn the week mainly, I concerned at what will happen when this stops and need some routines for then

HeadNorth · 30/11/2022 08:23

Once or twice a day to see to my horses. If the weather is not too grotty I may fit in a quick run. I could not go a day without leaving the house - I'd get cabin fever!
