How often do you leave the house if you wfh?

Orii · 29/11/2022 19:10

I've found since wfh that I only leave the house to go to the shop.

Sometimes I don't cross the front door for days. I used to go for walks when we had a dog, but he passed away a few months ago. 😞 it feels sad and weird walking our usual route without him.

I don't have any kids so no school run etc. I feel like I have nowhere to go!

This thread is really worrying, assuming those of you not leaving the house are physically able to do so?

Its not surprising so many people are overweight & unfit!

Those of you who find walking boring, download a podcast & get some earphones. Or run, or cycle.

I still exercise! Just because I'm at home doesn't mean I can't...
finish work at 6, get changed and start exercise then done and in the shower by 7

Daisychainsandglitter · 29/11/2022 20:14

Whenever I work from home I go for a walk an hour before I start work after dropping the kids at breakfast club and for an hour at lunch if I have no meetings so at least twice a day if not more.
I do find that I have to make a conscious effort to leave the house and go for a walk and it's harder to get the steps in when working from home than days when I'm in the office.

Erm. Quite a few of us do exercise and said it. My exercise is better for my body than walk around the boring estate...

ConfusedGin · 29/11/2022 20:16

I am in the office 2 days a week. I aim to walk to the high street for a coffee on at least one of the days I'm WFH, I have started doing my weekly shop on a Friday before work (double bonus of a walk there and back and saving time on the weekend for more fun things)

Ohmygoshposh · 29/11/2022 20:16

@PeloFondo that’s great if you like indoor exercise, I personally find getting outside amazing for mental health. I have Zwift (indoor cycling) but much prefer getting outdoors. I have decent waterproofs so will go out in all weather.

What a stupid assumption to make. I have got a rowing machine and spin bike amongst other things at home, apple fitness and an ifit membership.

Narrow minded view.

Numbat2022 · 29/11/2022 20:18

Yup, I've gained weight because of it. But I'm also saving about 4k a year in train fares and am home to see my son every evening, so...

I do cycle, but time is limited with the nursery run and dark evenings. I'm a lot more active in summer. I also do a lot of gardening which is sometimes physically active but doesn't really involve leaving the house.

Walking around the same suburbs I've been walking around since 2020 would not be much improved by a podcast.

Yeah I prefer indoor especially now. I'm in the NW and it's consistently wet and I don't want to be out in the dark in my area
Have a peloton, yoga blocks, resistance band and weights plus a full peloton membership so I can do whatever really. Usually a 45 min spin class

ladyofshertonabbas · 29/11/2022 20:19

It’s almost 8.30 and I’ve not got dressed yet. Had to pretend to the sains delivery guy that I was ready for bed. I’ve not been out since Sunday.

Reluctantadult · 29/11/2022 20:21

Usually school runs x2 and dog walk on my lunch break, plus possibly pop to the shop. I can't imagine not going out every day. Always go out once or twice on the weekend days too.

Googlecanthelpme · 29/11/2022 20:23

Walk kids to school, walk dogs, go for a run, go the gym, nip to shops, go and see elderly family… I leave the house multiple times a day.

I appreciate you are in a different situation OP but you absolutely should try to get outside everyday for your vitamin D and also for exercise - you don’t say if you do any type of home workouts but if you’re not then you need to get some steps in by going for walk. 30 mins a day - break it into two 15 mins if that’s easier.

Earphones, podcast, hot chocolate or coffee in reusable cup - cold crisp winters day, perfect walking conditions! I love it.

Sorry about your dog 🥲

PeloFondo · 29/11/2022 20:25

See a cold crisp winters day, lovely I agree
Here it's more like sideways rain and wind, and always being slightly damp trudging around housing estates with pavements too narrow so you are dodging hedges and trees
I'll stick with the spin class Grin and take vitamin D (always deficient even in summer)
If I feel the urge to go outside I can go in the garden but again... wet/wind/no

diamondpony80 · 29/11/2022 20:28

At least twice a day but I have kids and do school runs, clubs, music lessons, swimming etc. If I didn’t I can’t imagine I would leave the house very often at all! Shops, the occasional walk weather permitting. I work in the library sometimes just for a change of scenery.

C1239 · 29/11/2022 20:30

For those of you who tend to leave the house less nowadays have you found it’s made you more anxious about socialising etc?

Knackeredmommy · 29/11/2022 20:30

I have teens so don't do the school run, I rarely leave the house Mon-Fri. But I've lost weight as I have time to do workouts on YouTube and eat less than when I was in the office. I do got out at weekends though

Not really but now I need a recharge after.

I've lost a significant amount of weight in the last 18 months. I'm the fittest I've ever been and in clothes smaller that I wore at University. For a lot of it my exercise has been limited to walking, with a podcast, the weekend. It is possible to stay home M-F and still be fit and healthy.

WorriedMillie · 29/11/2022 20:32

I go out every morning and most evenings to sort the ponies out, I could get help with this, but it gets me out of the house
Maybe one lunchtime a week I pop out to get horse (or human!) food
Mondays and Fridays, we collect DD from school (OH and I take turns, depending on who’s free
DD does ballet and brownies during the week, so we also share these hiurneys
Saturdays, we drive DD to a couple of activities and Sundays, we try to get out as a family, even if just to the park
If not for DD, I wouldn’t go out anywhere near as much, especially in this damp weather, when the daylight is short- I could happily hibernate until March!

PopGoesTheProsecco · 29/11/2022 19:26

Sorry to hear about your dog.

I mainly work remotely (four days out of five) I only go out for school runs and errands for my mum at the weekend.

I used to be really active before I got Covid (4k runs at lunchtime when in the office) but now the WFH really suits me.

The thing that worries me though is now I’m driving less, I’m getting more anxious about driving. Planning routes to avoid certain roundabouts and ‘turn right’ junctions. I really need to get a grip.

Glad it's not just me who got mucked up by having Covid.

UsingChangeofName · 29/11/2022 20:37

I go out virtually every day.
Meetings in the evenings, things I volunteer at, my choir, I go and watch sport, I go to Church, I go to the supermarket and sometimes to the High Street, a couple of yoga / exercise classes. I go to things happening locally - Christmas Fairs etc at the moment - but anything going on, just for a walk round and a change of 4 walls.
If I don't have anything in the diary, then I might go for a walk.
I think it would be weird to sit inside day after day and never see people or breathe outside air.

StarDolphins · 29/11/2022 20:42

I have a dog & school runs but without these, I’d never leave the house. I doubt I will ever be without a dog though so hoping I can always get out. I am a homebody but wfh, I’m actually sick of the sight of my house. Wish I could wfh I’m someone else’s house!

Notplayingball · 29/11/2022 20:44

Out dog walking every day. Would feel like a caged animal if I couldn't get outdoors. I wrap up warm on cold days, rainy days etc. Shite weather doesn't put me off.

Sorry to hear you’ve been screwed over too by Covid. I run a support group at work and people who got it in 2020 are still having tests because they’ve not got better.

bigfamilygrowingupfast · 29/11/2022 20:46

Me and DH work from home - I've been been wfh for years now. I generally HAVE to leave the house every day (unless I'm ill!) - i get dreadful cabin fever otherwise and it makes me very twitchy and anxious. Having the gym has been brilliant - its got a pool and spa area so I've always gone after work unless I've something else planned, even if it's just to chill out and read a book.

My DH on the other hand can go up to 3 weeks without leaving the house 😂 we have a home gym and in the summer he potters in the garden in the evening, so he's fine in the house for long periods of time.
