To think China is still locking down

Sorry if this has already be posted about I was just watching the local news and they where covering recent lockdowns in China I'm shocked they are still implementing lockdowns and wondered how there economy is coping nearly 3yrs down the line of lockdowns and what has happened to the vaccines over there have they not worked. It seems so strange when the rest of the world are coming out the other side of this and they are still putting local lockdowns in place surely they can't do this forever

I hadn't thought about the vaccine side of it actually. Weren't they using Sinovax which I think was a Chinese or Chinese-Russian product? Perhaps it has not been so effective or not against the newer variants. That's just guesswork, though. It may have been fine and there are other factors. Or maybe take up has been low.

Jeffjefftyjeff · 28/11/2022 21:26

I don’t know the answers but in case relevant- their vaccine programme seems more focussed on working age groups there. We had vaccinated more over 80 year olds within 7 weeks of the vaccine becoming available (ie by end of Jan 21) than China has even now.

JackTorrance · 28/11/2022 21:26

It's because they suppressed it so hard, with such harsh lockdowns, that most of the population is still immune naive. They've backed themselves into a corner.

SeenAndNot · 28/11/2022 21:28

It’s madness but the powers that be really don’t care.

We as the west have been turning a blind eye to horrendous human rights abuses in China for decades.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 28/11/2022 21:28

My understanding is they've painted themselves into a corner by refusing to offer (more effective) western vaccines and their vaccine take up has been low anyway.
If they lift their lockdowns too fast now thousands will die as the herd immunity has not been allowed to develop.
On top of that The Party cannot be seen to change its mind on anything for fear of losing face.
Its a bad situation for the ordinary people there.

I think it's far more about political control of the population than it is about Covid.

PollyIndia · 28/11/2022 21:29

It’s because they are pursuing a zero covid policy for a virus that is incredibly transmissible and with a vaccine that doesn’t stop transmission.
So the issue isn’t the efficacy of the vaccine, it’s that their goal wasn’t to stop people dying but to stop any Covid infections at all. And yes I think their economy is suffering, and it’ll have knock on effects for all of us.

Exactly this

Figmentofmyimagination · 28/11/2022 21:31

They were saying on R4 this evening that some people’s doors are literally welded up to prevent them going out. Have you seen the terrifying videos of hundreds of tower block residents in Shanghai last April screaming from their windows across the night? I’ll try and find it.

Isn't this what all the protests are about?

I agree, we have to learn to live with this and to let our immune systems cope.
We can’t go on destroying the economy and people’s lives.

Yes, I agree.

And also, if the Chinese government wanted their citizens to have the vaccine, the populace would have NO choice in the matter whatsoever. They'd all be lined up taking it under threat of severe repercussions.

They have a social credit system over there and you do what the government tells you. The CCP is evil.

MolesOnPoles · 28/11/2022 21:35

It’s awful. On a slightly light (still terrible) note I read a blog by a couple who has been on the equivalent of a Tinder date, and woke up the next morning to find the building had been locked down. Their one night stand turned into three weeks in a small flat together.

also this

TrixJax · 28/11/2022 21:39

They were showing a graph on news earlier and only 20% of over 80s and about 50% of over 60s have had at least 2 doses of the vaccine. The elderly are sceptical of modern medicine and ted to still use traditional Chinese medicine.

I'm surprised the Chinese Gov has not made vaccination compulsory in order to access lots of areas of society. Even some western democracies did that!

Gronkle · 28/11/2022 21:43

I was listening to radio 4 today and they had a Chinese journalist on, apparently there are some protests going on at the moment, over the harsh control of zero covid. They had bolted the doors of a block of flats a few weeks ago, there was a fire, 10 people died and 9 were seriously injured, they could be heard begging to be let out. Horrendous.

What are you on about? Are you posting from China? Presuming that you are living just about anywhere in the world except China, then we've been been living with the virus for years now.

2tootired · 28/11/2022 21:46

As others have said this is far more about political control then covid.
I worry about the crackdown they will face from the protests.

saffy7 · 28/11/2022 21:54

A friend of mine from China has said that nothing has changed since the start of the pandemic out there, and she can't get back to see her family. It would take her more than a month to get home as no direct flights to the area she's from and each connecting flight would mean 2-3 weeks in isolation. Seeing as it would be 3 flights, she'd be in isolation up to 9 weeks and then coming back would be difficult as you run the risk of lockdown at any time.

BonnesVacances · 28/11/2022 21:55

I teach in China and am astonished at how much they put up with.

One student's mum was locked in at work (in a hospital) for 10 days. Wasn't allowed home because there'd been a Covid incident in the hospital. God knows who was supposed to look after her little girl!

Another logged in for a lesson from a huge hanger full of people where they'd all been moved to suddenly for quarantine. Even earlier this year, one student didn't go to school for 4 months and did online lessons. She was climbing the walls.

They're also not allowed to travel between cities. They have a pass on their phones on WeChat and they have to show it to be able to leave their town.

I'm not surprised they're rebelling tbh.

My son's girlfriend's brother is in Shanghai, and is getting married there next year. Only family are allowed visas, so my son is unable to go with them.
