To be annoyed at smokers when running.

NC'd Penis beaker etc.

No doubt IABU but I'm venting as I'm frustrated.

Full disclosure I can only run in the morning and whilst it's still dark its the safest route where I live.
This past week I've been running and have been caught behind a smoker and having to breath in second hand smoke. For a smoker he is a fast walker and there is no other way to pass as its a single lane if that makes sense. No roads to cross.
So 4 out of 5 runs this week I've had to breath this smoke in and twice have run past whilst hes exhaled a drag. I know have a sore throat/bad chest.
Running is the one thing I know I'm good at and now I'm ill because of this person I have to wait until I'm better or try and find a different route or time to run. Fully prepared to be flamed but why can't smokers just smoke inside their own home and if they don't want their home smelling then quit? I don't want to have to breath it in a third of a mile away.

You’re breathing in a ton more pollution than cig smoke
Get over yourself

Well it's obvious I'm wrong and still have issues with worrying about my weight. I will take the helpful advice and bid you a goodnight.

*airborne

Also if you have asthma you should have inhalers on hand at all times especially if running. And if you don’t have asthma it’s not a good idea to mess around with inhalers.

To be fair I get viral onset asthma. I don’t need an inhaler regularly but once every year or two a lurgy causes me to get horribly wheezy. Gp prescribes a blue inhaler or I use the old one and I get better over a few weeks.

Tessabelle74 · 27/11/2022 22:27

You breathing in a puff of smoke a few times will NOT make you ill 🙄 just man up and shout excuse me as you run up behind him and just go past!

thirstyformore · 27/11/2022 22:28

Wtf? Clearly a troll. Can't overtake a walking smoker? What a load of bull.

AllCatsAreBeautiful · 27/11/2022 22:28

Jaboodyrudi · 27/11/2022 22:09

Thats fair enough but their habit affects others. He is obviously going to work not having a leisurely stroll.

This is completely ridiculous — what does it matter whether he is going to work or having a “leisurely stroll”? He has as much right to be smoking outside as you have to be running outside!

Needaholidaypronto · 27/11/2022 22:28

gamerchick · 27/11/2022 21:47

Being behind a smoker outside has not made you unwell with a sore throat OP. A lurgy has made you unwell with a sore throat.

This. Stop being ridiculous @Jaboodyrudi and just run past the guy. Don’t believe there’s no way to pass someone. Where are you running that you can’t overtake a pedestrian.

Lcb123 · 27/11/2022 22:29

They have as much right to smoke in public as you have to run. You are probably exposed to a similar amount of toxic air by being out running near roads (assume you will go near roads at some point in a run)

NC'd Penis beaker etc.

Why do people do this? Is it a badge of honour, or something? Are you expecting different responses because you read a five year old thread, five years ago?

CarefreeMe · 27/11/2022 22:37

YABU

If this is happening almost every day can you not leave 15 mins earlier so you’ll be ahead of him?

Op I do feel for you but I've said you are being unreasonable because sadly many of us live nextdoor to smokers who fill our houses with smoke or make us change our habits become of their habits eg people who loved a window open can't do that, can't sit outside in summer because of the smoke.

I'm glad your smoker is doing it walking along. Hopefully one less outside wherever he lives but....yes it's not good.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 27/11/2022 22:46

I run 50 miles a week. You’re ridiculous and the reason a lot of people think runners are dicks. One or two breaths of fag smoke has not made you ill. get a handle on yourself.

QueSyrahSyrah · 27/11/2022 22:46

YABU to think that breathing in cigarette smoke as you pass someone by has anything at all to do with your subsequent cold / chest infection / whatever Confused

Itsabitnotcold · 27/11/2022 22:48

Can you do the same route but backward so you're running in the opposite direction to him?

aSofaNearYou · 27/11/2022 22:48

You definitely did not get ill from this level of second hand smoke, that's quite a paranoid thing to think.

snatchabook · 27/11/2022 22:49

You don't have a sore throat from a couple of breaths of secondhand smoke. Dear god.

Djmaggie · 27/11/2022 22:50

There is no way being behind someone smoking for 2 minutes has made you ill. seriously, get a grip!!

Bog · 27/11/2022 22:50

It's obvious OP has issues with their weight and yes is being dramatic but some of these responses....wow.

PriamFarrl · 27/11/2022 22:51

I used to run early in the mornings too. It was lovely to be up and about before most people. Did fuck all to get my weight down mind you. I put on 2 stone.

Also, breathing in some cigarette smoke for a couple of breaths won’t make you ill.
