To be annoyed at smokers when running.

NC'd Penis beaker etc.

No doubt IABU but I'm venting as I'm frustrated.

Full disclosure I can only run in the morning and whilst it's still dark its the safest route where I live.
This past week I've been running and have been caught behind a smoker and having to breath in second hand smoke. For a smoker he is a fast walker and there is no other way to pass as its a single lane if that makes sense. No roads to cross.
So 4 out of 5 runs this week I've had to breath this smoke in and twice have run past whilst hes exhaled a drag. I know have a sore throat/bad chest.
Running is the one thing I know I'm good at and now I'm ill because of this person I have to wait until I'm better or try and find a different route or time to run. Fully prepared to be flamed but why can't smokers just smoke inside their own home and if they don't want their home smelling then quit? I don't want to have to breath it in a third of a mile away.

While I'm not a smoker I really hate it when I'm walking along the pavement and a jogger runs towards me puffing and panting in my face.....but hey ho...
Real bug bare during COVID to.

Jaboodyrudi · 27/11/2022 22:07

Yes I'm probably being dramatic it's just frustrating and smells gross. And now my achievement is behind and I'm being a grump about it haha.

Oh give over. If someone fancies a morning walk whilst having a fag that’s entirely up to them. If you’re that bothered go and find another route or perhaps a 24 hour gym where you can run on a treadmill smoke free. Oh what’s that I hear you say? You like running outdoors and not indoors?

Yeah well maybe the smoker likes a fag outdoors and not indoors.

Jaboodyrudi · 27/11/2022 22:08

I know that's why I go in the morning so I'm not in the way. Covid was awful for running so much abuse.

Thats fair enough but their habit affects others. He is obviously going to work not having a leisurely stroll.

WaddleAway · 27/11/2022 22:10

Can’t you just leave 5 minutes earlier?

DarkKarmaIlama · 27/11/2022 22:10

@Jaboodyrudi

i don’t think running is keeping you very sane at all to be honest. You need to get a life, and quickly.

Toottooot · 27/11/2022 22:10

How did your mum make your asthma go away? Awa bile yer heid min.

NoCoatAndFurKnickers · 27/11/2022 22:11

He is either going for his morning walk or on his way to work where he obviously can't smoke. Choose another route and leave him be.

I'm not a smoker and remember the days when you stank after a night out as everyone smoked indoors. Now we tell smokers they can only smoke outside and even then there are places they can't smoke like outside areas in train stations. I honestly cannot gather a single shit to give about a man smoking while walking along a pavement.

Ducksinthebath · 27/11/2022 22:12

Wait, what, your mum can cure asthma?!

TooManyGerms · 27/11/2022 22:12

Can’t you just cross the road so you’re on the opposite side? This seems like a massive overreaction. It’s a minor annoyance at worst.

SantaOnFanta · 27/11/2022 22:12

The answer is simple...

Run your route in the opposite direction.

Then you'll end up running towards him and not alongside him.

Jaboodyrudi · 27/11/2022 22:12

No it's probably to do with my worry of becoming overweight again. Again another me problem. But if you rtft I have said I'm prepared to be told I'm wrong so there's no need to be rude:)

Understand it is annoying but second hand smoke as you run by someone didn't make you unwell.

Can you run the opposite direction? (If it is a loop) otherwise just try and get out before him.

Whitwhit · 27/11/2022 22:13

Jaboodyrudi · 27/11/2022 21:51

I get asthma when I get ill

But you haven’t got ill from breathing in a bit of cigarette smoke.
You’ve no doubt picked up the crappy bug that’s going round, from elsewhere.

Also, he’s walking, you’re running - how can you not run past him?

WaddleAway · 27/11/2022 22:13

How will missing a few runs with a winter virus make too overweight?

Heronwatcher · 27/11/2022 22:13

I think it’s very very unlikely that this level of passive smoking would have caused anything TBH. Plus if you live in the city jogging along a road or even a park close to a road is likely to have a similar affect on your asthma if you do that for longer periods. I’d speak to a doctor if you’re this anxious about some passing breaths of smoke in the open air. It does sound like you’ve just got a bee in your bonnet about this guy- if I were you I’d maybe try and empathise. Maybe he’s a long term carer, has anxiety himself or other problems and walking along this road smoking is his only time to himself?

WaddleAway · 27/11/2022 22:13

*make you overweight

Thepeopleversuswork · 27/11/2022 22:13

I hate cigarette smoke but you're being ridiculous. If they can't smoke outside early in the morning where are they meant to go?

Passing someone outside isn't going to do you any significant harm and it certainly won't give you a viral infection.

I don't know. My mum is no longer alive. I'm adopted so 🤷

superdupernova · 27/11/2022 22:14

Adding haha to the end of your posts doesn't make you sound like less of an arse Wink

tulippa · 27/11/2022 22:15

Can you get that ill from temporarily breathing in fag smoke? Yeah it's annoying when there's a smoker or vaper out on my run but it's a free country. They're free to smoke, I'm free to run.

Sometimes I'll forget it's bin day if I go for a run on a Monday and have to hold my breath as I go past. Sometimes people take up a lot of space on the pavement and it's hard to get past. It's just the way it is.

As a PP said, try to get past quicker. Say excuse me and just go in front.

SantaOnFanta · 27/11/2022 22:16

He's probably thinking... "For god sake, I just want some peace and quiet to enjoy my fag every morning and that bloody runner comes past ..."

WunWun · 27/11/2022 22:16

Why can't you pass him though?

ZiriForEver · 27/11/2022 22:16

It isn't unreasonable to be annoyed.
Smoking with other people around is selfish and anti-social.

Unfortunately the time hasn't come yet for the next step in limiting how their smoke polutes the world for everyone around.
