For a week I've had a blocked nose, coughing, producing literally buckets of dark green khaki mucus that is lumpy, thick, sticky generally yuck.

Doesn't seem to be getting better. Had one day improvement then back to no improvement.

Now feeling light headed/ dizzy.

Ulcers on roof of mouth from mouth breathing due to snot build up.

I'm super run down.

Do I need antibiotics or should I put up with it for longer, I feel awful. I've had antibiotics for chest infections before this time I've not sought any medical help as of yet?

Not covid

OnlyYellowRoses · 27/11/2022 14:21

I'd sit it out

upfucked · 27/11/2022 14:23

You sounds pretty unwell. There is the NHS info on chest infections it maybe helpful

www.nhs.uk/conditions/chest-infection/

romdowa · 27/11/2022 14:24

I'd be insisting on talking to a Dr. Sounds like you need antibiotics.

ShirleyPhallus · 27/11/2022 14:24

id call the dr for that yes, hope you feel better soon

Doubt you are producing “literally buckets of mucus” though 😉

amiold · 27/11/2022 14:25

I had similar a few year ago and ended up coughing up mucus which was mixed with thick heavy red blood. Took myself off to cue doc in middle of night and they basically said I didn't need to be there as this is my body fighting infection and sent me home

Infernalhellloop · 27/11/2022 14:25

@upfucked thanks think I've read that thousands of times over. I'm hankering for a quick fix...well anything really to get it to fuck off, and I feel so so bad, worse than anything I've had before. Including covid.

Infernalhellloop · 27/11/2022 14:27

@amiold 😱 seriously? That is definitely pneumonia surely!

I've had blood when I've blown from my nose mixed in with the mucus but probably from over blowing?!

Infernalhellloop · 27/11/2022 14:29

@ShirleyPhallus literally buckets....bin emptied every day!....albeit trapped in tissues. A table spoons worth at a time?

Call the GP.

pigonalipstick · 27/11/2022 14:41

Green mucus is good, it means your body is fighting the illness. Honestly to me it sounds like a heavy cold, but obviously I don't know how it feels

If you are not medically trained you should not be making such a statement. Antibiotics are useless against viruses and use of them when not required leads to antibiotic resistance. If the OP is concerned they have a bacterial infection they should ring 111 or their GP, they could even consult a pharmacist. Viruses can take a long time to clear.

I occasionally get blood when blowing and yup, it's from overblowing. Usually because it's also blocked

Fuuuuuckit · 27/11/2022 14:44

Wha have you taken already op? I'd be speaking to the pharmacist first. Plenty of fluids, comfort foods, Lemsip, decongestant etc.

Moon22 · 27/11/2022 14:44

You need to be assessed by a doctor. In my area, they will just prescribe an antibiotic over the phone. You might prefer to be examined though, so they can sound your chest, consider any other health issues etc.
For me, if it's stopping me fuctioning/going to work, I'd probably be thinking I need antibiotics. If you're managing ok, maybe just a cold.
Hope it passes soon

QuestionableMouse · 27/11/2022 14:46

I've had a fucking awful cold for the last three weeks. Went to the walk in this morning because I feel like I'm getting worse and not better and I have antibiotics for a chest/sinus infection. The lovely doc said it's likely I've had RSV (I think?) and they're seeing lots of people who have had it and developed an infection on top.

Maybe try 111/your local urgent care as you're more likely to be seen. I rang through 111 and was given an appointment to see a OOH GP.

You're not well, you don't feel like you're improving and that's exactly what these services are for.

raaraathenoisylion · 27/11/2022 14:47

As a HCP totally agree with @Lentil63 this sound viral and I doubt abx would be issued.

Green mucus is a good sign, it's when it's brown you should worry!

Prescottdanni123 · 27/11/2022 14:50

You sound ill. Possibly is just a horrible head cold (there's loads going about), in which drs can't do anything because colds are viral.

But there is no harm in checking that there isn't a bacterial infection if you are worried about the mucus. Sounds gross but if you sneeze some out onto a hanky, take a pic of it. That way you can show Dr and ask is this normal or signs of an infection. They may ask to see it anyway. I don't know how your drs surgery works but if its anything like mine it will be a phone/video call to start with for something like this, with the option to send pics.

Prescottdanni123 · 27/11/2022 14:52

@romdowa

It is far better to let a doctor decide whether you need antibiotics. Taking them when you don't need them is dangerous.

Wisterical · 27/11/2022 15:03

I’ve just had the same. The astonishing amount of snot was the worst bit as it affected my breathing and swallowing. It lasted three weeks. Plenty of fluids, regular paracetamol and as much rest as you can get. IMO this doesn’t need a doctor.

Infernalhellloop · 27/11/2022 15:31

@Fuuuuuckit lemsip max, sudafed, guafenesin, ibuprofen....started berrocca 2days ago.

I have this, ooh said it's covid symptoms phone your doctor tomorrow

Neolara · 27/11/2022 15:36

Sounds like a cold to me. I couldn't imagine ever going to the doctor for something like that.

Tistheseason17 · 27/11/2022 15:37

Call 111 today. You are ill today.
Don't wait til tmrw then be annoyed you can't get thru to a GP. This is what 111 and pharmacies are here for at weekends.
I'm always shocked by people waiting sick over a whole weekend and blaming the GP for being busy on a Monday morning because they did need not call 111 when they were sick the previous 2 days.

cptartapp · 27/11/2022 15:38

Why would you wait until tomorrow? This is partly why people can't get through on the phone to their GP and there are no appointments. People hang on and wait, then bombard the surgery.
There is a service you can access today. Ring 111 and ask for an appointment at your nearest urgent care centre. Joining the Monday morning queue tomorrow with hundreds of others is avoidable.
