To think Royal Mail workers should not be striking

They’ve already been offered a 9% pay raise and declined. Royal Mail is already making a loss. It’s a national service for the public which is now being severely disrupted by strikes, it’s appalling.

And was certainly not a middle class family

A promotion and hours changing is nowhere close to what the hell is going on here! I take it you got a pay rise with this promotion? I take it you read the contract and agreed to these new hours?

Conkersareback · 27/11/2022 20:02

After I accepted a promotion my hours changed

Did you agree those hours before you were promoted? Or did they promote you and then say 5 years later, your hours are changing?

If you couldn't do those hours, would you have accepted promotion?

Did the promotion mean more money which meant you could pay for childcare?

So you weren't expected to work for the same money, less benefits and pay for childcare?

Yes I agreed to the hours and had a choice. These Royal Mail workers have a choice as well, the company is modernising and this requires them to agree to new hours, no one is saying to them “you have to agree these new hours and we are not letting you leave your job” are they?

Exactly! I got promotion, more money, could pay for childcare!

Not quite the same as what's going on!

I must point out that I absolutely believe the RM workers have the RIGHT to strike. But I don't think it's a good idea.

whydontyoustay · 27/11/2022 20:04

There's plenty of other ways to send post these days it seems like they're just making themselves the less attractive option.

Hitthehighseastoday · 27/11/2022 20:04

Ok, maybe using my promotion as an example wasn’t the best idea, apologies for any offence caused

@Hitthehighseastoday yes they do have a choice! To strike and bloody fight for their rights!!

Not be walked over by fat cat CEOs!

ivykaty44 · 27/11/2022 20:06

It's entirely unreasonable of the employee to expect their jobs to remain unchanged for years, decades.

for some though it will be the end of the job, the Sunday hours change for many will not be possible, so they would have to seek alternative jobs

for many they don't just roll over and say - oh thats ok, they stand up to the changes to negotiate

Italiandreams · 27/11/2022 20:06

@Hitthehighseastoday do you really think it’s ok for people to no longer be able to afford to do the job they have done for years, through no choice of their own, but purely because the company wants to change their working conditions? That they should just suck it up? It’s vital that workers have rights, else what kind of society do we live in?

I think it's great! They're standing up for not only themselves but the future employees! No way should unskilled workers be treated as lesser people!

the ones who can do Sundays should. The company is not obliged legally to do this I don’t think but maybe they could negotiate separately with the workers that can’t work Sundays and have a credible reason

So tell me what is a good example? That you've experienced?

Conkersareback · 27/11/2022 20:09

@Hitthehighseastoday according to a lot of people on here, like you with "unskilled" as a PA comment they are!

This is what bugs me...posties aren't refusing to modernise! I don't know how many times I need to say it. Posties are willing and able to make changes, modernise, do things differently.

What we will not accept is 20% less pay, terms and conditions for modernising.

We will not accept starting later in the day when it means women will be walking the streets solo in the dark because of those later start times....as well as people who need to pick their children up froM school, when they could previously do so before. It is different if you agree to these things in the first instance but to just change these hours without any consideration to this is
Disgusting.

We will not accept hard working, valuable members of staff being laid off only to bring in an agency worker to do the same job on less pay, terms and conditions.

There is a huge difference between modernisation and levelling down a company for the shareholders and ceo to line their pockets!

Conkersareback · 27/11/2022 20:12

Oh yeah that's what RM are saying...... not!

I thought it was all about the 9% rise they got! Like loads of said it comes with strings, like working Sundays!

What's a "credible" reason? Is I
Just don't want any to because I didn't sign up
To that credible?

The specific bit about female posties working in the streets while dark I agree with you on. This is a safety issue and shouldn’t be allowed to happen, Royal Mail have a duty of care to their staff and asking female staff to be out alone at night would not be meeting this duty of care. We can agree on that

What sort of job are you in? Did you grow up in a middle class family?

I would also like to add that the cwu have tried to get Simon Thompson into negotiations to make a deal and settle and agreement, fully open to changes but he is refusing to turn up to meetings or just stands them up.
