Disclaimer - I have never vote for the Conservative Party
So to play devils advocate
Sending elderly patients back to carehomes - whilst Matt was overall accountable for the decisions made here, do you really think he just said something like “send them back, who cares what happens, we need the beds”. No. Public Health England (full of actual experts in medicine and NHS operations) would have presented options and I wouldn’t be surprised that this was the recommended one. Beds were needed for patients testing positive and needing treatment! Asymptomatic transmission was also not fully understood at the time. I have no doubt a Labour government with a different health minister would have agreed with PHEs approach in the exact same way. Similar decisions about requirements for PPE for staff in care homes would have been made in the same manner - we had major PPE shortages in hospitals, I imagine PHE said requiring them in care homes would only worsen the hospital situation.
The affair of course is not morally correct but we don’t know the full details of his relationship situation. It’s awful for his ex and children that it came out so publicly. In terms of breaching any rules, I see there is a degree of hypocrisy there which is why there was so much outrage. But he was already working with her (amongst others) so in regular contact anyway without masks etc anyway, kissing is really no different for transmission risk. My opinion is I see no major breach of any guidance considering the close proximity anyway - no real change in their risk of transmitting covid between them, but yes I understand the outrage.
PPE contracts also looks dodgy. However all major Tories were at it. There was a major shortage of PPE and any mates in business saying they could use their contacts to help get supplies was signed up. For example the Baroness Michelle Mone association with PPE Medpro (established at the time of the pandemic to win contracts and with no prior experience in the area) and their £200m contract, currently being investigated and reported on by the Guardian has no mention of Matt Hancock at all, but she did lobby other ministers and Tory peers.
As for voting record - the vast majority of MPs of any party vote in line with their party. That is party politics. Clearly Matt subscribes to the general Conservative view on policy, social issues etc. But reality is, whether he agrees personally or not, he would always vote in line with what is wanted by the government. I think his point that politicians are people too rings true, can’t judge someone based purely on politics and their involvement in a sub optimal party political system, which is really your only way to be a politician (or at least a successful one).
