Electric bill doubled

Daisy95 · 25/11/2022 20:02

Can I have some help, we've been racking our brains and cannot work it out.
Our electric bill (we submit meter readings every month) has doubled from £98 (we have an electric car, to £200.
We haven't been doing anything different. Our heating is gas, we turn every plug or when not in use apart from fridge/freezer.
We charge our car the same amount per month (infact we've charged it less this month)
We've always sat with our lamp on in living room and don't use any other lights around the rest of the house.
Can anyone think what it could be?!
Thanks in advance

Is that price rise before and after a change in your standing charge / unit price?

CoffeeLover90 · 25/11/2022 20:05

Is there any debt on the account? If so the monthly payment takes this into account over 6 months, if you contact the supplier they can spread it out more. Were you on a priced tariff that has now ended?

cakeorwine · 25/11/2022 20:06

What are your readings for each month?

in kWh?

Gh12345 · 25/11/2022 20:40

Have they possibly just done a recent meter reading?

LindorDoubleChoc · 25/11/2022 20:42

Have you been keeping up with the news for the last 6 months?

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 25/11/2022 20:43

Sounds like the electric car is the issue. £98 is shockingly cheap nowadays.

cakeorwine · 25/11/2022 20:45

Either:

a) You are using more electricity
b) Your electricity is costing more per unit
c) Both

You need to know how much electricity you used in the previous months in kWh and the cost of each unit in kWh. And the standing charge you paid for each month

That's the only way people can see what's going on

Daisy95 · 25/11/2022 20:56

Sorry forgot to add we are on a fixed tariff until March, yes I've been keeping up with the news 😂

This month usage was 570kwh
The month before was 272 kWh.
We have had the electric car since April and know from my app we have only spent £65 charging it this month.

It's ok our direct debit more than covers it and we have plenty of credit I just can't understand what it could be, when our electric use hasn't changed. As our heating is gas. Didn't know if anyone had any ideas that's all.

OP posts:
Daisy95 · 25/11/2022 20:57

Cost of unit rate is 34.49p
Standing charge is 22.87p per day.
This has not changed been on this traffic since last year.

OP posts:
Daisy95 · 25/11/2022 20:59

Sorry that should be
Unit rate 31.49p

So nearly 300 kWh extra in a month?
That's about 10kWh extra a day.

That is a lot.

cakeorwine · 25/11/2022 21:01

Can you see your daily usage at all?

You should be able to see if there is any clue?
I can see my daily usage when I login to my account.

Daisy95 · 25/11/2022 21:02

@cakeorwine yes that's what I cant understand, it's such a massive increase and we literally can't figure our why. We don't have a tumble drier/dishwasher. Not washing clothes any more than usual. Neither of us suddenly at home more. I just can't figure out what it is

Daisy95 · 25/11/2022 21:03

@cakeorwine I can't see my daily usage I'm with octopus, still awaiting a smart meter so can't even see what that is reading

10 kWh a day - can you see from a meter display to see what devices you have running. That should show on a display if it's something that's been left turned on

NancyVicious · 25/11/2022 21:05

Have you accidentally turned your immersion heater on?

cakeorwine · 25/11/2022 21:06

You probably need to take a look at your meter on a daily basis or even shorter to see what you are using.

Elieza · 25/11/2022 21:11

Unplug everything. Take reading before bed. Take reading on waking. That’ll tell you if anything’s on overnight. Something surely must be. Heater in an outhouse perhaps? Immerser switch been knocked by mistake? Who else is in the house, ask them?

Daisy95 · 25/11/2022 21:13

No immersion heater, yea that's good idea over the next I will keep an eye on the meter, whilst things are off, then try switching things on? to trial what they add onto the meter?

OP posts:
Daisy95 · 25/11/2022 21:15

Right good plan thank you, I will turn everything off over night, take a meter reading that will literally just be the fridge plugged in. As we don't charge anything over night etc.
see what it reads in the morning.
Checked the garage nothing is plugged in/on, no other out house. Just my husband and toddler.

do you havd a power shower?
my teens are guity of standing under the hot water for a loooong time ifwe don't hurry them along.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 25/11/2022 21:27

Double check the meter reading that you last gave. Possibly a typo error when submitted?

Ihaveroyallyscrewedup · 25/11/2022 21:36

Octopus charged me almost double the units I’d used a few months ago, I can see my usage on the app so knew that it was a mistake, I’d be emailing them, I’ve always found them really helpful and quick to get back to you.

Yabado · 25/11/2022 21:40

10kwh a day is roughly the extra amount of electric that my hot tub uses daily when it’s on at 40 degrees and used for 30 -45 mins a day .

So if it’s a sudden increase then you have something on that is a real electric eater 😂
although with that much extra use it should be obvious what it is .

I left the omelette maker on for a day by mistake and it used up an extra tenner in electric in 24hrs

i think the only way you can do it is to switch everything off take a reading then another reading every few hrs when you put it all back on

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 25/11/2022 21:41

If your app says you spent £65 charging your car this month that is c 203kwh at 31.9p per kwh.
If you charged your car more last month then your usage last month without the car was a max of 69kwh or 2.3kwh per day which is quite low?
Did your meter readings perhaps not coinicide with the month end? Or Did you put last month's reading in wrong and this month's right?
Over 2 months at £130 for the car that's 406kwh min out of 842kwh. Which leaves 436kwh not car which is 7kwh per day max (as you said you charged the car more last month).
Is that daily usage about right from before you had your car?
