I like to usually donate to the collection but there isn't one this year.

So as a Teacher/TA would you like a gift or is it just tat/another fucking candle you could do without? The reality is how can I possibly know what they'd like? I suppose I could just do a bottle of Prosecco?

YABU - guy a gift
YANBU - no gifts required

What year is your child and do they like their teacher

chineapplepunks · 25/11/2022 13:32

If you feel like you want to get a gift, a box of chocolates each would be appreciated!

Merryoldgoat · 25/11/2022 13:32

They are Y5 and R but the younger is in a specialist unit for ASD.

They both like their teachers - they both have a key worker as well.

Chocolates are perfect - I'm happy to get them something but I can imagine you get candle fatigue after a while so I didn't want to give them more shite.

We've been actively asked not to this year by the school. Encouraged to give handwritten cards/pictures if we feel we want to give anything to the teacher.

TumbleFryer · 25/11/2022 13:34

Get a voucher.

APurpleSquirrel · 25/11/2022 13:34

I give them a couple of boxes of Lindt about a week before the end of term, so they can eat them before they break up & the school staff (non-teaching) get something as well.

Merryoldgoat · 25/11/2022 13:36

@TumbleFryer

Given I'd be buying for 3 teachers and 2 TAs it seems a bit measly to give a £10 voucher for somewhere as I don't really want to spend more than £50 in total

I wouldn’t get them a “thing” - one scented candle that smells lovely to one person will smell like bog cleaner to another. There’s only so many mugs/key rings that one person would want. I’d go for perishables or a voucher

Merryoldgoat · 25/11/2022 13:39

Consumables it is!

Thank you :)

Chocolates. They can eat, regift, or donate if not liked.

I always think better to buy at Christmas and get the benefit of teacher knowing you are grateful for two more terms!

Secondary school Sen unit /HoH getting stuff sent in this year. They have a lot of extra work...

MaryMollyPolly · 25/11/2022 13:40

Please don’t buy presents. DD is a TA. She’d really rather parents didn’t buy presents. Chocolates are generally wasted on her, as she’s vegan. She doesn’t drink alcohol either. Loads of people don’t drink nowadays.

Thegreenballoon · 25/11/2022 13:41

Between my two children there’s at least half a dozen adults I’d have to buy for given job shares, TAs etc. So instead of individual gifts I buy some nice cookies and chocolates for the staff room. The children write/make cards for anyone they’d like to.

Greyphoto · 25/11/2022 13:44

I asked the teacher and they said they would love things for the classroom (guess it saved them paying it out their pocket). They asked for some books by a specific author. Another year the teacher wanted some glue sticks and crayons. I would ask them what they need for the classroom instead of a present.

cantkeepawayforever · 25/11/2022 13:48

Honestly, just a card with a message. Please. It’s so embarrassing getting gifts when you know families are struggling.

tulips27 · 25/11/2022 13:49

I think a shop voucher is a nice thought, it will help with the cost of living crisis more than chocolates.

cantkeepawayforever · 25/11/2022 13:52

Or if you feel you have to give ‘something’, see if you can club together with other parents and put one or 2 £ into a shared voucher.

This is perfect, they really don’t need more ‘ tat’

Greydogs123 · 25/11/2022 13:55

At Christmas I just buy a box of chocs or biscuits for the staff room. Dd will write a card for her teacher.

purser25 · 25/11/2022 14:14

I used to like a small plant. Maybe an Amaryllis £2.99 in Lidl or about £5 elsewhere.

MumVUnicorns · 25/11/2022 14:16

We have been asked by our school not to buy the staff presents, I can't tell you have relieved I am by this (one teacher and 3 TA's in the class).

I will however, be sending in thank you cards and pictures - as they are all amazing.

Hellothere54 · 25/11/2022 14:16

As a teacher, there is nothing nicer than a Christmas card with lovely message (if you think I’ve been doing a good job!) Presents are not needed - lovely, appreciated - but not needed. I do my job because it is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done and I get paid to do it. I wouldn’t think more of it less of anyone depending on presents!

trailerandtractor · 25/11/2022 14:18

I’m going to send in some nice biscuits for the whole team to share. Dd talks about various teachers and I don't want to unintentionally exclude anyone.

KatherineofGaunt · 25/11/2022 14:18

Another teacher here and definitely happy not to receive presents, although they're appreciated if people do give them, of course. But I remember the children I have taught, not whether or not they gave me a present.

Bronzeisthecolour · 25/11/2022 14:22

The present I have kept and cherished was a book mark. Personalised with a message from that child about a specific thing I helped with. I give coffee vouchers/ amazon to my dc teachers abd each TA but I am debating it this year as is starting to add up!
