I like to usually donate to the collection but there isn't one this year.

So as a Teacher/TA would you like a gift or is it just tat/another fucking candle you could do without? The reality is how can I possibly know what they'd like? I suppose I could just do a bottle of Prosecco?

YABU - guy a gift
YANBU - no gifts required

Generally, though, if you’re buying gifts for teachers for six years, and often quite lavish ones, is it really hard to buy a form tutor or a head of year, particularly if either of them, I’ve helped you out with tricky, teenage issues, a little something?

Perhaps I do though

£10 minimum suggested donation at the primary school! Plus the " extras" some parents make a display out of giving. It's all done online as well so everyone can see who has put in. I don't bother as a former TA I saw so many parents guilted into contributions that they couldn't afford! I buy some basic school supplies instead, and get the DC to write a nice note instead!

Our school have specifically asked not to send gifts for teachers or TA’s, they stopped gifts during Covid and have never restarted particularly given the current financial climate. I send a card thanking the teacher for all their work with my kids.

Not a teacher but work with kids. I used to like getting cosy socks and biscuits at Christmas time but it was never expected.
The cards were the nicest with a thoughtful message inside them. I still have them now, even those from years ago.
