2 adults and 2 dc and dog. I'm spending £230 a week. I'm buying brands. I'm wondering if this is unusual or should I cut back. It seems a lot. How much are you spending?

£120-150 a week
2 adults, large teenage boy & 6yo
Includes £10a week of foodbank donation
Covers Evening meals & breakfast plus lunch on weekends for everyone and lunch in the week for me.
We eat well & a mix of brands and supermarket, cook from scratch about 70% of the week. I meal plan which has helped with wastage.
It's gone up quite a bit since last year

Ragwort · 25/11/2022 09:12

It's typical Mumsnet that people seem to spend so much on 'cleaning products'.... what are you all buying?

I am amazed at the poster who spends £250 a week on food (2 adults & 2 pets) yet eats a vegetarian diet and no alcohol??

We (2 adults) spend approx £120 a week ... we eat well and drink wine most evenings but no pets and no more than £10 a month on cleaning products.

APurpleSquirrel · 25/11/2022 09:12

£120-£160 a week - 2 adults, 2 DC.
Included toiletries & cleaning supplies but not loo roll (buy in bulk every 6 months).
Shop mostly in Aldi & top up in Sainsbury's. Really noticing prices jump now, so downgrading on a lot of items. We cook from scratch mostly, don't drink alcohol, no pets.

peppapig79 · 25/11/2022 09:50

£100 a week for 1 adult and 2 kids

peppapig79 · 25/11/2022 09:52

If you can afford to spend £230 then carry on and enjoy. If not then look at brands or even where you shop. Places like sainsburys is more expensive than the likes of aldi or lidl

livingthegoodlife · 25/11/2022 09:53

Between £80 to £100. 2 adults, 1 teen, 2 kids. Doesn't really inc alcohol as I tend to hulk buy when on offer.

I'm amazed at the thought of £250 a week. Would you be willing to share your shopping list? I'm just being really nosey because I can't imagine spending that much.

My list is usually
Milk - 4 x 6pts
Fruit
Veg eg potatoes, carrots, onions, broccoli
Salad - lettuce/cuc/tom
A roast style piece of meat
A packet of meat eg mince or chicken breasts
24 eggs
2 packs yoghurts
Packet of ham/salami/pate
Pasta
Crisps
Coke
KitKat's/penguin/twix whatever on offer
Maybe cleaning stuff
Frozen pizza
Butter

Roughly the same each week but I mix it up to make lots of different meals, we don't eat the same each week.

zingally · 25/11/2022 09:55

About £100 a week for 2 adults, 2 infant school age kids and 1 elderly dog.

OceanbreezeSun · 25/11/2022 09:59

Roughly £80 - 2 adults and a toddler.
We do the whole shop at Aldi, occasionally dh will nip into Tesco for top up bits, like fruit/ veg & things we can’t get at Aldi.

It’s abit more when we get toiletries/laundry/cleaning stuff, but that’s usually once a month.

Filleto · 25/11/2022 09:59

It probably averages £150 a week
2 adults, 2 teenagers, 2 children. Three meals a day for everyone plus snacks. I feel like it’s too much, a few years ago it was £80 with an expensive week being £100.

DancingWithYourDog · 25/11/2022 09:59

About £60/week. 1 adult, 1 young teen, 2 cats, 2 dogs. Includes pet food, toiletries, cleaning products etc. I meal plan very carefully and cook from scratch most of the time.

SweetPetrichor · 25/11/2022 10:00

Approx. £100 for two adults, give or take.

Danni675 · 25/11/2022 10:01

About £120. 2 adults, 1 pre-teen and 1 6years old.

familyissues12345 · 25/11/2022 10:03

I spend about £80-90 but then get a Gousto box for 2 most weeks. There's 3 of us - 4 if DS is back from Uni

Expected the food bill to go down when he left for Uni, but it hasn't happened. Mix of prices going up plus a lot of stuff seems to come in sizes for a family of 4, so we just end up eating more.... BlushGrin

mamacattiva · 25/11/2022 10:05

One thing I do is compare prices on the grocery delivery apps if I’m buying higher cost ingredients (trolley.co.uk is useful too) and then order with whoever is the best value for those. Recently M&S has been coming in as cheapest for quite a few things Shock

crumbsneverdid · 25/11/2022 10:09

£100 - 1 adult, 1 child - but child eats similar portion ( ie would need to buy 2 pork chops or whatever). So nearer to 2 adults.

Batmansmummy · 25/11/2022 10:16

3 weeks our the months it's round about £80 a week then 1 week of the month I usually need to stock up on coffee dog biscuits washing powder and plug in air freshener so it's usually about £100-110 that week we're 2 adults 3 kids and 2 dogs and that includes 3 pack lunches a day .

IWannaBeInTheRoomWhereItHappens · 25/11/2022 10:26

About £70-80 (used to be £60 ish before rises) on 3 adults and 1 sometimes home from uni. All cleaning stuff, toiletries, booze included. Shop online at Tesco and eat vegetarian. Takeaway about once a month or so.

xogossipgirlxo · 25/11/2022 10:27

For 2 adults 70-80.

jevoudrais · 25/11/2022 10:42

So variable depending on what dog food you buy etc. Mine are raw fed and the three of them cost the best part of £200 a month.

A Tesco shop for us is £60-£70 usually. Two adults and a toddler. We don't buy many brands, baked beans and ketchup we do and a few toddler snacks but otherwise we get own brand versions of things.

monty09 · 25/11/2022 10:44

£120-£130 that's 2 adults and 5-6 kids depending on if it's DSC weekend with us,
We also meal plan but can't seem to get it any lower.

Rutennotou · 25/11/2022 10:47

About £80 a week on the main shop (two adults, a teenager, a toddler and two cats), maybe £20 on top up shops for milk, bread etc over a week. Then about £100 a month in Home Bargains for toiletries, cleaning stuff and other random stuff I probably don't need 😁

h78 · 25/11/2022 11:07

£72.00 4 adults and 1child, no pets. Can rise to £100.00 if we need extra from local butchers, usually once a month.

Zwicky · 25/11/2022 11:29

About £70 for 2 adults 2 teens, one tiny cat and one large dog. Used to be more but we’re on a very, very tight budget arm. We also used to be more people as I have 2 older teens away atm so it’s hard to directly compare.
No alcohol or nappies etc.
We eat a lot of cheap, pasta based meals and have cut down massively on meat. I’m much more careful with cheese now. No fresh fish but I sometimes get smoked salmon “trimmings” for pasta and I use tinned anchovies and sardines.
Breakfast is porridge or eggs, lunch is sandwiches or wraps or leftovers. I do a couple of veggie meals a week and try to stretch meat by padding it out with veg. The only fresh fruit I buy is bananas and oranges or unless it is in the offer at Aldi (they have, I think, 6 fruit veg offers but it’s often all veg). I probably spend about £3 a week on biscuits/crisps but no proper puddings or yoghurt etc.
I think £230 a week for 4 plus dog is high. I didn’t spend that much for 6 plus cat and dog when we were flush. I can see how you can spend that though. Our dog used to have much more expensive food than he gets now but some (Wolf, lilys kitchen, are still £30-40 more for a £12kg bag than we were paying then) We don’t drink alcohol, and don’t buy pop/cordial/juice either and they can put the cost up quite a bit. If you buy a lot of fish, premium cuts of meat, out of season fruit, puddings, drinks, and convenience food then it’s easy to spend a lot. It’s easy to pick up “homeware” and count it in with your grocery spend. If you can afford it and are happy with your diet then it’s not outrageous. If you want to save money you have plenty of scope.

Hesma · 25/11/2022 11:41

1adult, 2 DC (12 &10) and cat, £80-100 per week

IncompleteSenten · 25/11/2022 11:44

4 adults. About £150 a week.

I don't know what the cat food is pw. We buy in bulk.
