How much do you spend on weekly shop?

2 adults and 2 dc and dog. I'm spending £230 a week. I'm buying brands. I'm wondering if this is unusual or should I cut back. It seems a lot. How much are you spending?

About £60. 2 adults and 1 toddler.
All fresh meat too.

No I had someone comment to me I was spending a lot for 4 of us. So I just wondered what you were spending. It doesn't sound like I'm overspending from responses. I don't meal plan and buy all brands. Thank you 😊

But is it affordable to you? It doesn’t matter if someone else thinks it’s high or low. It’s what you can afford that matters. FWIW I think your spend is low. It’s lower than ours and we are 2 adults and 3 dogs now. We make all the dog food from scratch using fresh meat, salmon, rice, vegetables, etc. I even make their treats myself. We only buy high quality food. It’s more expensive but we can comfortably afford it and we enjoy it.

Toomanylosthours · 24/11/2022 22:38

We spend around 120 a week on 4 adults. 3 of the adults have really healthy appetites. I eat a standard to smaller portion. 120 p/w includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Also includes a couple of bottles of wine a week and treats such as biscuits and crisps. Generally bake own cakes, protein bars etc. Dogs food and cleaning products / toiletries separate.

neighboursmustliveon · 24/11/2022 22:40

Two adults (heavy drinkers by many standards), 2 teens, 2 cats.

We spend £160 per week (up from ave £135 I would say a few months ago) plus we buy cats pouch food from Amazon (but dry and litter in food shop). We try not to op up shop but often do so some weeks can go and spend another £60. We usually have 2 take away as month at around £30 each time.

MintyGreenDreams · 24/11/2022 22:48

Around £100 for 2 adults and one 8yr old

These thread are pointless. We all have vastly different lifestyles, tastes and budgets.

you can buy £1 shampoo or £10 shampoo. People can eat salmon and steak every week, plus expensive wines while others will be having beans on toast. Some will stock up on expensive cleaning supplies, others will buy a bottle of 99p bleach.

It is very easy to spend hundreds of pounds a week on a family shop if you have the money.

This is it really. It wouldn’t cross my mind to buy salmon cos I know we can’t afford it, so I don’t look.
Horses for courses isn’t it. As long as you cloth is cut to your bed get then what’s it matter

TheGuv1982 · 24/11/2022 22:52

Around £100, 2 adults 2 children.

I tend to get meat separately from the main shop, same with bits for the dog.

Lcb123 · 24/11/2022 23:01

If you can afford it and enjoy it then I don’t think it matters. I spend about £50 a week in supermarket for 2 adults. Then eat out / takeaway 1-2 nights

Carbon12 · 24/11/2022 23:03

Normally about £60. 2 adults, 2 DC under 2.

We spent £38 in Tesco last week, I'm quite impressed (doesn't include alcohol or meat). I get my chicken from the butchers.

ViviG2 · 24/11/2022 23:04

Around £200 per week, 2 adults 1 baby and 1 dog. This includes baby essentials like formula, nappies, baby food etc and all toiletries/ cleaning products. It’s a lot but haven’t managed to spend much less than that.

JaceLancs · 24/11/2022 23:05

Average £70 a week for 2 adults and 2 cats

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 24/11/2022 23:07

We spend £75 a month on the big shop for food, then buy 2 loaves of bread and a litre of milk every 3 days - ish.
Toiletries and cleaning products are about £15 a month, less if possible. My son pays for cat food and litter as we rehomed his cats when my granddaughter arrived and they had 2 under a year old.
2 adults, teens of 18 and 16, 2 cats.
DD is away at uni most of the time, but we don't spend more when she's home.

Sungodess · 24/11/2022 23:12

Personal finances can vary wildly from person to person. Ultimately we all buy what we can afford. Averagely we spend £300 on a weekly online shop but then there are top ups throughout the week. I’d guess we spend around £400 a week. Family of 5.

£75 a month minus bread and milk?

Damn you know how to shop!

NCFT0922 · 24/11/2022 23:16

Around £180 a week; 2 adults, 3DC and 1 baby who is weaning & breastfed.
Doesn’t include toiletries or alcohol. We eat out twice a week and 2 of the children have school dinners.

PeloFondo · 24/11/2022 23:17

I shop when I need to do it can be 7-10 days and spend between £45-70 (just me) usually shop at Aldi or online at Sainsburys
I'm not admitting how much the cat costs, he's 3kg and eats like he's a lion Confused

Icecreamandapplepie · 24/11/2022 23:18

About £200pw on 'shops' including household stuff and alcohol.

Not including the odd takeaway though.

I do not get how any family spends £40 or £50. Not unless very low income and eating super noodles and beans on toast type things every day.

A vast majority of what we but is supermarket brands too.

Icecreamandapplepie · 24/11/2022 23:18

Icecreamandapplepie · 24/11/2022 23:19

£75 a month???!!!

@PomBearWithoutHerOFRS
Please share a rough weekly shop.

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 24/11/2022 23:20

@Carbon12 I know how to be hungry a lot. We eat shite. Well, technically it's not very bad nutritionally, but it's boring, repetitive, and frankly a bit soul destroying.
same shit different day just about sums it up. The weird thing is that I am still fat! Now THAT is the truly depressing part!

DragonflyNights · 24/11/2022 23:22

I don’t get why people are excluding top up or outside items like meat from a butcher etc and pet food etc? Surely you add it all together because it’s your total weekly shop, not just the big one from the supermarket?

If I exclude wine and pet food from my weekly total it’s going to be about £15-20 less than what I truly spend on the weekly shop.

I only excluded it as
It's not food for me Grin
I find it hard to work it out as I buy in bulk as and when I need it because sometimes he eats more or less
Pay £36 for 48 cat food pouches and that usually does 3 weeks greedy skinny cat

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 24/11/2022 23:34

@Vintagecreamandcottagepie .

Roughly - Farm Foods, with a coupon for (I think £5 off over £60 spend)
3kg pasta.
12 tins soup - chicken and or tomato
Just remembered I get a flat of 24 tins of tomatoes every 2 months or so.
2 tins corned beef
5kg sack of potatoes
5 bags frozen veg - assorted between 750g - 1kg
3 "meat" frozen packs - 3 for £10 - chicken or mince with onion or meatballs
60 (nasty) sausages 2 for £5 30 packs
500g hard cheese
500g "butter" stuff
pulses to replace what I used last month - barley, lentils, split peas, broth mix etc.
every so often we need cooking oil
I do have a big stock of seasonings, spices, packets and jars of random weird (.mostly out of date) stuff I buy in bargain buckets and "whoopses"
That's about it I think.
Our local FB page posts when fruit and veg past it's best is being given away and we sometimes get some of it if we're quick.

thelobsterquadrille · 24/11/2022 23:52

About £100.

Two adults, a dog and three cats.

absol · 24/11/2022 23:53

We spend about £90 a week, 2 adults one DC. DC still in nappies but I buy 2 jumbo packs for £20 when on offer. I try and split branded things weekly, one week large Fairy non bio, next week kitchen spray, bleach, bin bags, next week kitchen and toilet roll etc etc. We do roughly meal plan and watch spends, not to every penny but if I wasn't checking could easily spend £60 a week more. We usually have a takeaway on a Friday for £12ish
