2 adults and 2 dc and dog. I'm spending £230 a week. I'm buying brands. I'm wondering if this is unusual or should I cut back. It seems a lot. How much are you spending?

OP posts:
Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 24/11/2022 23:54

2 adults 2 children. I spend between £80-110 per week.
I shop at Lidl and top up at a little Tesco.

Bathbomb99 · 24/11/2022 23:55

Seems very high to me. 1 adult, 2 children and 1 cat here. I spend abound £70 a week. I Don’t drink alcohol.

ninetieseyebrows · 25/11/2022 00:03

Hello Fresh box for about £65 for 3 adults (me and 2 grown teens and doggo) plus top up shop of about £70 every ten days. The Hello Fresh boxes have really helped me economise, which has really surprised me

Nat6999 · 25/11/2022 00:43

2 adults £200ish a fortnight, will be more for Christmas

Withnoshoes · 25/11/2022 08:22

£50/60 between the two of us. We do have a take away or cheap meal out maybe most weeks. I batch cook for my work meals like slow cooker meals or stir fries. I use frozen veg mainly in those as cheaper. Have some veggie days too.

Withnoshoes · 25/11/2022 08:24

Should add that’s mainly Aldi with the odd Occado delivery. It’s free delivery and you can sometimes get food value on multi buys. I tend to buy non branded.

Woahtherehoney · 25/11/2022 08:29

2 adults, 1 young child (half the week) and 2 cats - about £80 a week. £60 on a main shop at Asda then £20/£25 on top ups from Co-op

Also just to add we don’t really drink alcohol and that doesn’t include takeaways. Oh and I work from home but fiance works in the office and takes lunch 3/5 days.

I don't understand how people are spending so little!

We're 2 adults 2 DC, one is a toddler but I'm struggling to get it below £180 a week

Ontobetterthings · 24/11/2022 22:23

No I had someone comment to me I was spending a lot for 4 of us. So I just wondered what you were spending. It doesn't sound like I'm overspending from responses. I don't meal plan and buy all brands. Thank you 😊

Really? It sounds exactly like you're overspending from these responses to me!

Kabalagala · 25/11/2022 08:40

£120 a week 2 adults 3 dc. That's all food, nappies, toiletries, alcohol. We meal plan but aren't particularly careful and buy lots of "treats".

@Vintagecreamandcottagepie .

Roughly - Farm Foods, with a coupon for (I think £5 off over £60 spend)
3kg pasta.
12 tins soup - chicken and or tomato
Just remembered I get a flat of 24 tins of tomatoes every 2 months or so.
2 tins corned beef
5kg sack of potatoes
5 bags frozen veg - assorted between 750g - 1kg
3 "meat" frozen packs - 3 for £10 - chicken or mince with onion or meatballs
60 (nasty) sausages 2 for £5 30 packs
500g hard cheese
500g "butter" stuff
pulses to replace what I used last month - barley, lentils, split peas, broth mix etc.
every so often we need cooking oil
I do have a big stock of seasonings, spices, packets and jars of random weird (.mostly out of date) stuff I buy in bargain buckets and "whoopses"
That's about it I think.
Our local FB page posts when fruit and veg past it's best is being given away and we sometimes get some of it if we're quick.

And you can make
360 adult meals out of that? (3 per adult per day)

What do you have for breakfast?
What's a normal lunch?

splatfrog · 25/11/2022 08:45

I spend roughly £40 a week. I've become a genius at spreading it out for maximum meals.

middleager · 25/11/2022 08:47

2 adults, 2 ravenous teenagers and 1 cat.
Around £125 per week.

Hill1991 · 25/11/2022 08:48

About £80-£100 a week that's for 2adults a 4yo and a cat but all depends on what shifts we have at work so like next week I'm working late most nights so shopping will be less but takeaway and prepared food will be higher

YomAsalYomBasal · 25/11/2022 08:52

£100 a week including cleaning products, nappies, dog food etc. Me and 5 kids.

TheFormidableMrsC · 25/11/2022 08:53

Roughly £45/£50 a week for me, 11 yo DS and our cat. I buy some wine at the weekend. This includes cleaning products and toiletries. I meal plan and batch cook. Also go through the cupboards and freezer every week and only buy what we actually need.

I looked at Hello Fresh, but even with a discount it's £39 for 3 people, 3 meals, 3 x per week (I'm veggie so not included in a box) so that's £13 a meal between 3. Our daily budget for 3 would be half that a least. I don't see how that is ecomical unless I'm missing something?

iwishiwasonacruise · 25/11/2022 08:56

I've added ours up recently to be about £700 a month for 2 adults and 2 teenage DC. Just buying normal stuff for dinners, school packed lunches and breakfast. I buy some odd toiletries weekly but try and do a Costco shop once a month for all that other stuff, loo roll, detergent etc. It breaks down approx £100 once a month at Costco. Then 4 weekly Tesco deliveries approx £100 each, then top ups during the week maybe from Lidl or Iceland. We buy a mixture of brands and cheapy. With things like snacks my kids can't notice a difference say between Tesco chocolate mini rolls or the branded ones. Some things we like certain brands, like I much prefer Finest ham and McCain over chips, but crisps and snacks,
or tinned goods we try and do cheap x

RudsyFarmer · 25/11/2022 08:56

Four people - about £150 for everything.

iwishiwasonacruise · 25/11/2022 08:57

I meant to say this has deffo all gone up in the last year or so. Our budget used to be more like £600pm x

mamacattiva · 25/11/2022 08:57

Around £250 a week, family of 6. I think it’s a ridiculous amount tbh, I don’t think it needs to be that high but I have ravenous teenagers who seem to inhale food. I’m going to try and reduce it slightly by cooking one less fish or meat meal per week and baking homemade snacks using cheap oats or something similar.

DoNutSweatTheSmallStuff · 25/11/2022 08:58

I shop at Aldi. It's about £80 a week for 2 adults & 2 children.
That includes all toiletries, cleaning stuff etc.
I meal plan, never throw food away, only buy what we need, and always non brands.

OP you seem to be spending a lot.

snowbellsxox · 25/11/2022 08:58

Around £90 a week 2 adults a four year old and a one year old.
An extra £50 a month on toilet roll, cleaning stuff etc

LindorDoubleChoc · 25/11/2022 09:02

I've been monitoring this carefully for a while. We are me and dh and 1 body building teen. We spend about £130-£140 weekly on food, cleaning products and everyday toiletries. This doesn't include alcohol. We cook mainly from scratch and have lots of meat free meals.
