Throwing red flags in straight away OLD

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 24/11/2022 16:40

My profile has a prompt

Green flags I look for:
(My answer) can talk about current affairs and has read a book in the last 12 months

So I got a match who replied with

'I'm currently reading Jordan Petersons 12 rules of life'

WOW!! Really what would you reply to that!

Hypothetical as obviously blocked him!
Was I being unreasonable 😂

For a lot of people these days the Internet is their source of information, they don't need to know what the truth is but want to express their righteous indignation.

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 24/11/2022 17:44

Perhaps I have got my views of Jordan Peterson from third parties.

More the issue was on this dating platform you do have to pick prompts or interesting anecdotes on your profile. That's how you join.

But you don't have to comment to match.

I match with people who just like my photo. It was a 'green flag' not a pre-requisite. I do read a lot but have dated people who don't.

Maybe he was being naively honest! 😂

And yes you judge people on OLD! That's kind of the point. I don't date everyone I match with

It's not the fact that he has read it, but the fact that he chose to tell tge OP about THIS particular book as one he'd read in the past 12 months. I mean what could have been his motivations...

That was my thought!

Perhaps he was just being honest.

Anyone who has been OLD knows that you have to sift through the people. Some of it is grim. So I am perhaps jaded!

I don't have a problem with Jordan Peterson. He's someone that's been cherry picked to sound like a total arsehole and he's been demonised on the back of this. He actually talks a lot of sense.

MzHz · 24/11/2022 19:11

I agree, all the hyperbole about JP is bonkers.

MissEnolaHolmes · 24/11/2022 19:15

SoapMactavish · 24/11/2022 17:11

He said he read it. Didn't say he agreed with any of it though, did he?

Sometimes it is worth listening to the other side to understand just how and why they are wrong. Most people who are atheists have actually read the bible. I'd be more worried about someone who said they disagreed with Jordan Peterson based purely on the opinion of randoms on the Internet.

I’m reading it as I want to know for myself what the fuss is about

HotDogJumpingFrogHaveACookie · 24/11/2022 19:17

How do you get to the stage of having such strong views on someone when you haven't actually read their work?

I think you sound a tad unhinged.

Wakeywake · 24/11/2022 19:18

No idea what that book is about, but I've read Mein Kampf. Not sure what you'd think of me based on that piece of information.

Swissnotswiss · 24/11/2022 19:18

Perhaps I have got my views of Jordan Peterson from third parties.
So you haven't actually read it but you have an opinion on other people reading it??!

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 24/11/2022 19:19

well even more WTF…

agree with PPs regarding JP’s actual views being okay. You might have missed a good one there all because you go on hearsay.

PicaNewName · 24/11/2022 19:19

What is wrong with JP? I've watched interviews with him and I agree with some.

HotDogJumpingFrogHaveACookie · 24/11/2022 19:22

As for why did the chap mention it? Probably because the OP specifically said she wants someone who can talk about current affairs and who has read a book??

carefulcalculator · 24/11/2022 19:24

It is appropriate to be judgmental when OLD, surely - you get the replies, you judge, you pick?

I would not want to chat further with certain people, life is too short to waste on people you think you won't get along with.

BigFatLiar · 24/11/2022 19:25

Wakeywake · 24/11/2022 19:18

Read it and agreed with it - something wrong with you
Read it - great staying power
Started it and put it down - normal

It was given to all couples getting married under Hitler. I suspect its like Stephen Hawking's books lots of people have them, few read them.

That's kind of my point, context is everything. Just knowing that someone has read a book says nothing whatsoever about a person.

Moonatics · 24/11/2022 20:02

Getoff · 24/11/2022 17:37

I haven't read the book. Please someone tell me what's wrong with it?

I'm surprised OP has read it, given how much she hates him. Maybe it's what's in it that has made her feel so strongly about him?

Nothing in particular, he says, in far too many words:-
Clean your own room,
Take care of yourself
Be nice to others
stand up straight
set your own house up correctly before criticising others
Tell the truth
And similar.
Nothing earth shattering,

Nymeria6 · 24/11/2022 20:07

Huh??

Pinkbonbon · 24/11/2022 20:12

I've seen a bit if his stuff online and he has only ever come across as intelligent to me. Dunno what all the fuss is about. Though maybe I've missed things that are not ok.

I would wieery however why he chose to mention a book that might be controversial. I'd query if he was going to be a bit standoffish or preachy. But I don't think I would have blocked him straight off the bat.

Paq · 24/11/2022 20:18

It's pretty obvious he was making a point to the OP. If he was trying to present himself as a well read person he would have phrased it differently. Block and move on was the sensible decision.

Hoolihan · 24/11/2022 20:21

Lot of women here falling over themselves to prove how cool and open minded they are 🤣 Jordan Peterson is a well known, controversial right wing/mens rights commentator. It is highly likely that a man on a dating site mentioning this book has very dubious views about women.

He’s a sexist arsehole so it’s a pretty big red flag.

Iliveinanoodie · 24/11/2022 20:34

Op, what in particular has jp actually said that has offended you so much?

knittingaddict · 24/11/2022 20:43

I agree with you op. Not your rules (my husband rarely reads but is a very intelligent man), but Jordan Peterson! No thanks.⁹
