Impatient people at the petrol station

asblindasabat · 24/11/2022 16:33

went To the petrol station this morning to fill up my car on my way to work.

I paid at the pump, put the fuel in my car and got back into my car again to drive off.

There was a woman in her car using the pumps behind me and she had finished filling her car and so was waiting for me to leave the forecourt to facilitate her exit as there was no room for her to get through until left as there were pumps on the other side which were being used.

I had got into my car, used some hand sanitiser and then switched on my engine to get ready to go.

As soon as I got into the car, she had driven her car from her pump right up to the tail end of my car as if to say hurry up in a really passive aggressive way - for context, I drove off within a minute of getting back into my car.

AIBU to think these people should just chill out and have some patience? It’s not like I was sitting there dithering for 5 minutes!

The absolute worst is people who pay at pump, then leave their car blocking the pump whilst they go into the shop for snacks and drinks! Just no.

ItsAWoozyItsAWazzy · 24/11/2022 22:11

Yeah I'd be the impatient woman in this case.

Whenever I see a car waiting behind for me to leave I always move off asap. It annoys the hell out of me when somebody gets in their car and starts rummaging around for god knows how long.

AmyFl · 24/11/2022 22:17

I'm with you OP. I hate people who do this sort of thing! Like start their engine just as I'm getting back into the car, it is so rude and impatient. PS I sanitise before I drive off too.

I got stuck behind one the other week; came out of the shop with sweets and Capri Suns. Got in the car, starts unwrapping sweets and handing them out to the crotch trophies... Then onto putting straws into the Capri Suns, meanwhile there's a queue building up behind, and about 10 car park bays sat empty waiting for the faffers to discover them.

Crotch trophies 😂😂😂 Love this!!

Nellodee · 24/11/2022 22:29

I was behind an elderly man using the rear pump the other day. After he has finished using it, he pulled up close to the car in front and I was able to fill up whilst he went and paid. I thought that was really thoughtful.

People have got places to go and don’t want to sit there whilst you leisurely sanitise your hands. You should have just pulled forward to let her through. You sound very entitled OP.

I genuinely don't understand this logic. How can the OP be anymore entitled than the person behind getting annoyed? Their time is equally important to themselves, how can one be more deserving?

The person in the rear isn't hold the person in front up - only the person faffing around in the front car, blocking the egress of the person who has used the rear pump, and preventing others in the queue from filling up, is affecting other people.

You're welcome to waste your time in any way you please, but other people are entitled to think it's rude if you deliberately hold them up while you're doing it.

KimberleyClark · 24/11/2022 22:41

I get annoyed by people at department store tills who, once they have paid, spend absolutely ages faffing about putting their purse away and getting their bags organised without moving away from the till so the next person can be served.

mathanxiety · 24/11/2022 22:59

Are you absolutely sure that she was impatient for you to clear off and let her out?

Maybe you're putting intentions to her actions that weren't there?

Maybe she didn't want to be stuck if someone else backed in to the pump you were using?

Even if she was being passive aggressive, pay no notice. Some people are too impatient and see no problem pushing others out of their way.

Fwiw, I always use hand sanitiser when I fill up, leave the supermarket, etc. I do it before I stick the key into the ignition. It takes a few seconds.

yoyy · 24/11/2022 22:59

We are talking about sanitising hands, it really doesn't take that long, so I don't understand how it could have a huge impact on someone's life? Do you get frustrated if it's someone elderly or disabled in front of you as they may take longer to get to their car & get going?

mathanxiety · 24/11/2022 23:00

@Setyoufree

The hand sanitiser is intended to kill bacteria and viruses, not to clean dirt off your hands.

yoyy · 24/11/2022 23:02

I never said you couldn't think it was rude, I just don't see how one less is entitled than the other? Making people wait for you is no different in expecting others to rush for you 🤷🏻‍♀️

mathanxiety · 24/11/2022 23:06

@PurplePixies

Agree 100%.

And also not a bit shy about making their feelings felt. It's funny because they have the reputation of having superior manners, which is not really deserved.

mathanxiety · 24/11/2022 23:11

@cookiesbeforepookies

The CDC disagrees with you wrt the effectiveness of hand sanitiser.

colt45 · 24/11/2022 23:13

I always pull forward immediately to let the person past if I have to faff about for whatever reason.

Wingedharpy · 24/11/2022 23:20

This is why I get petrol at odd times of the day/night - when I know it will most likely be quiet.
I'm a bit of a novice with filling up but, sadly, bereavement has forced my hand.
A bit of patience is always appreciated.

MNMH · 24/11/2022 23:32

Sheesh. All she did was move her car a little too close to yours!

Katkinsgreyy · 24/11/2022 23:34

I once filled up, got back in my car and put my seatbelt on. Literally all within seconds!
An aggressive man behind me started swearing at me and gesturing as soon as my arse touched the seat! 😂

MadelineUsher · 24/11/2022 23:36

So, you seem fine with being "infuriated" by a slow-moving elderly man - who was presumably moving slowly because he was elderly - and yet find it incredible that someone was irritated by your unnecessary tardiness in moving out of the way...

BertaHoon · 24/11/2022 23:40

If I was pulling up behind you that close, I'm not hurrying you, I'm making the pump I've just left available.

YABU

asblindasabat · 24/11/2022 23:49

I don’t think I held her up at all. It only took a few seconds.

it only took a matter of seconds. You make it sound like I sat there for 5 minutes to do my hair and makeup 🙄🙄

I can’t stand people who faff about in their car knowing someone is waiting to get past or waiting for their parking space.

Confused

What is wrong with your driving if you are liable to cause an accident without a satnav or a sip of water? Checking your mirrors as you move off is basic, but you shouldn't need to adjust them when you've just been driving, should you?

If you want to drink before you start driving, or to set your satnav, you pull in elsewhere to do it. Surely you can do that safely?

It takes 60 seconds. You can wait 60 seconds.

flamingogold · 25/11/2022 06:54

It doesn't always take 60 seconds to faff around with satnavs and water.

Apart from the fact that the satnav should be programmed before leaving home, the previous poster said she likes taking a minute to sort herself out now that she's older (although depressingly I've had a licence longer than she has!). That could be a 15 minute meditation for some people.

If you need to do anything to the car other than fill up with fuel, move it to a different parking area. Most petrol stations have them.
