Annoyed when girl hands over her pig in blanket to the boy in the Waitrose Christmas advert

Am I the only one to be incensed by the message shown in the Waitrose ad - don't worry boys, if you cry when you don't get what you want, a girl will give you hers? She's lost her pig in blanket but you've got yours, so all is well and the natural order of the world is restored.

Yes, I know it's just a Christmas ad but it's another example of women being socialised to be kind from a young age, ignore our own needs and put those of men first. Any one else agree?

You got a lot of time on your hands at the moment hun?

KeepthePIB · 24/11/2022 16:01

@Biddie191 That sounds horrifically familiar!

Glad to see there are some people who agree with me. And I completely agree about the piss poor under catering which allowed the situation to happen in the first place. At least two each needed, plus extra for Boxing Day.

@PumpkinQueens Surely everyone faffing about on Mumsnet has a lot of time on their hands?

Every time I see this and I find myself saying 'don't give that snivelling child the last sausage!' don't reward such ridiculous behaviour.
I am obviously very mean.
😂

cosmiccosmos · 24/11/2022 16:06

OP that is the message if all John Lewis adverts at the moment. Centring men. However anyone not cooking at least 3 pibs per person should be sent for re-educating at the Christmas dinner prep school.

UnicornsForLife · 24/11/2022 16:09

I hate that they give in to a tantrum. Why should the girl do without her pig in blanket when a screaming brat gets it instead 😡

Twiglets1 · 24/11/2022 16:09

Oh give over. If it was a boy giving food to a girl you could argue that it’s stereotypical showing a girl needing help from a powerful male.
Its just a sweet scene & not that deep.

SueVineer · 24/11/2022 16:10

Totally agree op - male entitlement and female subjugation. It bothered me too

Alexandernevermind · 24/11/2022 16:12

I just saw it as "older child gives treat to upset baby". I must have missed the underlying misogyny, I'll try better next time.

WindUpPenguin · 24/11/2022 16:13

More to the point, who cooks a Christmas meal with less than one pig in blanket per person. This is what incensed me. It would not wash in my family.

leilani83 · 24/11/2022 16:14

Agree - an annoying brat getting his tantrum rewarded!

HamzasHairnet · 24/11/2022 16:14

He's not a baby. He's about 6.

turnedintomygran · 24/11/2022 16:15

The message isn't that deep at all. It's quite a shallow advert all in imo. I could cringe at the suntan bit.... Waitrose work all year to get the food to your table? Is that not true of every supermarket or christmas seller? And they don't do it for the good of it - they do it for the profits of it.

The catering was pretty poor - so waitrose plans all year to get the food on the table but the family can't be bothered to count how many people are at the table? Alright then. Waitrose - 1, Family - 0

Danni675 · 24/11/2022 16:16

We are having 64 pigs in blankets this Christmas. No undercatering here.

vix3rd · 24/11/2022 16:17

I am incensed that someone made a dinner & didn't make enough pigs in blankets for folk to have more than 1 each & didn't announce how many each person was allowed ! That's what I'm freaking annoyed at !

Iwantmyoldnameback · 24/11/2022 16:18

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/11/2022 15:04

And WTF are they snacking on later if there's only one each? Talk about under-catering.

I thought this.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 24/11/2022 16:19

Just watched it
I'm sure there's offence everywhere if you look for it
You're being ridiculous

User478 · 24/11/2022 15:00

Bet that fictional little brat does that whenever he doesn't get whatever he wants, she's learnt to just give in to him, it's easier.

Also, who planned this meal? There should be enough pigs in Blankets for at least 2 each. Maybe if they'd gone to Aldi they could have afforded enough pigs in blankets for everyone.

(Unless there's a deleted scene where Uncle Martin fills his plate with a monstrous mountain of pig flesh.)

😂😂😂

Exactly. I came here to say I blame the grownups who cooked too few. Your Aldi comment is hilarious.

Rubyupbeat · 24/11/2022 16:31

Oh...ffs, let's take all the joy away, along with the laughs, because some people have too much time on their hands!!

nothing2wear · 24/11/2022 16:33

I know what you mean OP but he is quite little so I see it more as supporting sibling than stereotype roles (this time!)

This is very cute though 😊

Beamur · 24/11/2022 16:36

I reckon the kid had already eaten a load of them and was just kicking off about not getting any more.

Blossomtoes · 24/11/2022 16:36

Oh Lord there’s going to be a lot of crying in this house, we’re not having any pigs in blankets at all.

Summerishere123 · 24/11/2022 16:42

Apparently they have had to cut a scene with a farmer that has a tan line because it is offensive to people with skin cancer.
I think people are doing their best to look for offence anywhere they go now!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 24/11/2022 16:42

It did annoy me too, OP!

Well at least it makes a change from a boy giving a girl his sausage 😏
