Kids still feeling the effects of lockdowns…

sloanedanger · 23/11/2022 20:27

I just got caught reading a really interesting thread on Twitter started by a teacher:

“Is anyone else thinking we are starting to see the impact of 2 years of disruption and time at home, due to COVID 19, in schools? Extreme behaviours? Some pupils very emotional and struggling to regulate? Low attendance compared to normal? Winter bugs hitting hard?”

A lot of the comments say Y3 is the worst, others saying Years 7 and 8.

My DS is in Year 2 and often struggles with emotions and self regulation at school. It’s made me think, perhaps there’s a reason why linked to the pandemic. Lockdown was hard, DP and I were home with very young DC, trying to work, poor mental health, emotions high. Very little patience.

@MichaelFabricantWig I saw a poster on another thread on here mention masks should be brought back. No fucking way

Hahaha yeah sure I’d be going along with that again. Not.

in all seriousness I find that messaging blaming the lack of restrictions for the Strep A cases pretty sinister

I thought it was that lockdown delayed infections and is causing the spike now?

Like the high level of flu

So basically the other way round this is another negative element of lockdowns

Dinoteeth · 05/12/2022 23:50

@MarshaBradyo that's how I'd take it too.

Chicken Pox is another seasonal virus that LOs just haven't been exposed to so had disproportionately high numbers last winter.

Walkaround · 05/12/2022 23:52

One thing the Metro article doesn’t specifically mention is that a lot of viruses and bacteria are resurging together right now, having been suppressed for so long - including those which normally surge at a different time of year. I know a lot of children with chickenpox at the moment - normally more common from around March-May than in November - December. Strep A tends to cause much more serious problems in children who have, or have just had, chickenpox. So the loss of clear seasonality and a surge of all sorts of things at the same time, is bad news, as they can exacerbate each other.

Could some viruses becoming resistant to antibacterial wipes and stuff?

In theory yes. At work we rotate the antibac sprays between two or three with different modes of action. But that's not necessary in a domestic sphere, just use soaps and detergents.

From all the post written above I got attracted by one phrase you’ve said. “ I wish I could go to live in the woods with the kids “.
in 2020 , right after new year we were living in central London next to the huge park in a 3 bedroom rented apartment. My elder daughter was nearly two and a half , little boy only 6 months . Despite all restrictions we were going to play in the park for at least 4 hours daily . Outdoor playgrounds , just just daughter learned to drive tricycle and so on . It sounds not that bad . But trust me , I simply never saw such a dead city . Even kids were small , they desperately needed social life , another toddlers to play around , another people apart parents presence . Kids started to feel parents stress immediately. Boredom . Routine . Fair for a future , desperation, emptiness …nothing could fill that hole . So , in the beginning of February, I have packed my all things from really lovely spacious apartment, and left a country. Maybe we didn’t go somewhere special , the country was in Europe , but not European Union , and Covid restrictions didn’t apply there . I swear , we peacefully passed COVID , even forgot it existed . Passed all rising electricity bill prices , nhs negligence ( heard millions of stories that patients are truly untreated). We have passed tube strikes , rising fuel prices …I swear , it’s not normal environment in London any longer . Traveled back there often for a week or two and except unruly haircuts and wrinkled clothes I didn’t notice anything else. For real people got squeezed so much , that no more energy on basic needs . What a difference kids could to enjoy is enormous. Super warm climate , seaside , friends around , quite affordable. To my surprise most of the kids could speak English just because of YouTube and all cartoons . People relaxed, in less chaos and rush . So to put long story short … I left central London life because I couldn’t understand new life style government tried to empower. Most importantly, the kids can be educated anywhere else , can enjoy their indoor , outdoor playgrounds , outdoor swimming pools , friends , affordable tennis or dancing , or swimming classes . Everyone is happy. Got tired in London with brainwashing attitude that only U.K can provide you the best lifestyle. Not anymore . Take my word . Boring place . How to help kids to cope with post COVID trauma !? I guess only parents help, support , conversation, explanations can help . Doesn’t matter the age , if the parents will show weakness , if they will loose strength, the kids will take inside themselves that stress three times more .

That sounds amazing. A few years ago weed have been in a position to do this but now I have teenagers who need to be where their lives are.
Your comparison had been a real eye opener. Well done on doing this for you and your family.

Which country did you go to @Hellomydear ? Good for you - I can see why, with young kids, if you can make it work that was as a good option.

XelaM · 02/01/2023 11:26

@Hellomydear Only country I can think of that fits this description is Georgia which is a gorgeous country. Maybe there's somewhere else like it. Or maybe Switzerland, although not sure about the weather.
