Is it weird to go to bed at 8.30pm?

DP is working, and DD's are sleeping, DS won't go to sleep until 10 but is in his room watching tv and playing quietly, so I've come up to bed. I love snuggling under the duvet and reading or watching tv it literally makes me feel so happy and content but my friend thinks its weird that i would go to bed at 8.30pm. I will need to go and put DS to sleep (he has asd and wont go to sleep earlier) and let the dog out for a wee at 10pm but until then im more than happy in bed watching tv and scrolling MN.

If DP was home id stay downstairs but since he isnt i dont see why i shouldn't be warm and cosy in bed doing the same thing id be doing on the sofa, and if anyone is worried about Ddog he is currently snoring in his bed beside me and will be unimpressed when i wake him and send him outside.

So
AIBU its really strange for an adult to go to bed that early

Yanbu theres nothing wrong with going to bed whenever you want

I go to bed at 6 as part of my routine because of my medication (anti depressants and anti psychotics). If I took them at night when I am supposed to (say 8-9pm) then I would never get up at a reasonable time. I much prefer early to bed and early to rise.

HintofVintagePink · 21/11/2022 06:10

Not at all. Our family life is full on. I try and get to bed (lights off, no phone) for 8.30/9.00pm at least once a week, if not twice.

I wake up (at 6am!) the next day feeling properly rested and able to cope better with the day.

LunaLoveLemon · 21/11/2022 06:21

we love an early night here. We had a few rough nights with the kids last week and DH and I were going to bed at 6.30/7! Asleep by 8, it was absolute bliss!

Is it because you're all trying to save on heating??

No, ive done it long before the cost of living crisis. We have an open fire in the lounge so i could be lovely and warm on the sofa.

A lot of people seem to be missing the point of this thread...it is not about having an early bedtime, it is about going upstairs to watch tv, read etc in bed.
I started doing this in the Winter a couple of years ago.
I have a large lounge which takes forever to heat up after work so I started going upstairs for the evening, my bedroom heats up quickly. I continue the habit, either watching box sets, reading etc. I do not turn off the light to sleep until 10.45 pm.

Ihavedogs · 21/11/2022 08:15

@crimsonlake I totally agree and said the same upthread.

Going to bed for me is the period of time before going to sleep. For me I am asleep within 30 mins of going to bed, DH is asleep within about 10 seconds of going to bed. Lounging around in bed and then then getting up at least twice to do other things, is not going to bed, it is lounging in/on the bed and participating in other activity which could be done on the sofa.

NeedAChangeAsIAmSoooOuting · 21/11/2022 08:25

I voted yabu purely because you're not going to bed in the sense of sleeping. I often sit in bed watching TV in the evening but sometimes I sit on the sofa. I haven't gone to bed for the night.

honeylulu · 21/11/2022 09:22

I'm quite jealous actually! I often don't finish work until 8ish (when wfh or if I'm in the office I get home around that time). Then spend a bit of time with the kids (one is a teen but still likes to chat), then dinner with husband is rarely before 9/9.30. Then a bath and sorting stuff for the next day. Rarely in bed before gone 11pm and exhausted. I pick up my book and read half a page then fall asleep. A couple of hours in bed watching TV or reading before sleep sounds lovely! I do watch TV in the evenings but it's usually on in the kitchen while I zip around cooking, eating and tidying. The living room only really gets used at the weekends.

I need to sort my life out!

When I was pregnant with my first child my husband did a lot of work trips abroad. I used to have a much earlier dinner and get into bed around 8 to watch TV though often I'd fall asleep not long after that. It was bliss!

mydogisthebest · 21/11/2022 09:30

So many people in bed so early. Ok most of you are not sleeping but how on earth do you find it "cosy" to watch tv in bed? I don't find it comfortable or cosy and I would almost certainly fall asleep.

I can watch tv or read sitting downstairs on my settee until midnight and not fall asleep. I also personally don't think tv's in bedrooms are a good idea.

Another thing is what time do you all eat your evening meal? Must be ridiculously early if you are in bed by 8pm. We never eat before 7.30pm but often is is later. If we ate early we would just be hungry again before bed. Children eat early not adults

rainbowandglitter · 21/11/2022 09:32

I don't do this because I can't sleep if I've been laying in bed first

Depends what time I finish work but I eat as early as possible because I fast until lunch then
So 5-6.30pm ish

We eat about 6 but if DP is going to work we sometimes eat at 5 so we can all eat together.

A litre of tea in a flask! 👏🏼😂 You, my friend, are winning at life! 🏆🫶🏼

Not weird at all, when my husbands out I do exactly the same :)

Eggsandavocado · 21/11/2022 19:47

If I go to bed it’s to go to sleep and that’s quite often at 8:30, rather that than nod off on the sofa

Flippppppp · 21/11/2022 21:23

Not weird at all! I’m a single mum with sole custody of my kids. Their bedtime is 8.00. If work has been killer, I’ll go to bed when they go to bed. Sometimes I’ll read, sometimes I’ll just go straight to sleep because 8 years of solo parenting plus full time working has killed me 😂😂 I have a cat and he loves it when we do early bed 😂

doggiedazy · 21/11/2022 23:54

Today I've gone up to bed at 6pm - eaten dinner in bed, and only gone downstairs to do about 10 mins worth of chores. I've been out at work all day (luckily I mostly work from home), it enjoyable, but I do need to recover from being around people all day and being cold because my workplace is freezing.

I won't do lights out until 12, but it's warm in my bed & I'm also exhausted from the weekend. I have done some online tasks on my laptop, but mostly been on my phone and watching a bit of TV.

My sitting room is mid-decorating so out of action, but I actually prefer being in bed, the weather is so cold where I am and I'm scared to use the heating too much & at least in bed I have my electric blanket and whichever pet wants to hang out with me keeping me cosy.

doggiedazy · 21/11/2022 23:55

Pretty much my routine every Monday night, I just can't imagine going out on a Monday although I must do occasionally!

BrutusMcDogface · 22/11/2022 07:54

I can’t get on board with eating in bed! That’s the only thing I personally wouldn’t do.

Terminator66 · 22/11/2022 08:56

I go to bed most days at 3pm to watch on-line streaming services for around 6 hours as I have nothing else to do. It means I can turn the heating off as the duvet keeps me warm in bed.

Aquarius1234 · 22/11/2022 10:01

You aren't alone,
it's odd and anti social if not living alone.

For me I work later, but still even with 9 to 5 job or 10 to 6, I go to bed/ sleep after midnight.

I would think of 8 30pm as just before decent t v dramas come on in the past, prime time etc

And I thought eating after 7pm was quite normal for some.
If I went to bed at 8 30pm I would be have no enjoyment to my evenings. Depressing.

marmb87 · 22/11/2022 18:26

I do this quite a lot if I am off - I work unsociable hours, so any opportunity to snuggle under the duvet watching Netflix and having a wee wine, is a dream come true!
