Is it weird to go to bed at 8.30pm?

DP is working, and DD's are sleeping, DS won't go to sleep until 10 but is in his room watching tv and playing quietly, so I've come up to bed. I love snuggling under the duvet and reading or watching tv it literally makes me feel so happy and content but my friend thinks its weird that i would go to bed at 8.30pm. I will need to go and put DS to sleep (he has asd and wont go to sleep earlier) and let the dog out for a wee at 10pm but until then im more than happy in bed watching tv and scrolling MN.

If DP was home id stay downstairs but since he isnt i dont see why i shouldn't be warm and cosy in bed doing the same thing id be doing on the sofa, and if anyone is worried about Ddog he is currently snoring in his bed beside me and will be unimpressed when i wake him and send him outside.

So
AIBU its really strange for an adult to go to bed that early

Yanbu theres nothing wrong with going to bed whenever you want

I have no idea how you motivate yourself to get back out of bed again. If I went to bed at 8 30 I would be asleep by 9pm!

Zanatdy · 20/11/2022 21:30

Not at all. Just my DD (14) and I at home at moment as DS is at Uni. DD is always in her room doing her homework or gaming, so I go upstairs at 5! Don’t always sit in bed, often do steps (getting my step count in). But I love being upstairs and when I’m a celeb isn’t on I’m asleep by 9.30 at latest, up at 5.45

I wouldn't class that as going to bed.
Going to bed = sleep to my mind. So if I was your friend, I'd be a bit confused.

You are warm and comfy. Enjoy.

Yes I agree with this, it's not really "going to bed" to me. It's sitting in bed for a bit. Which is a totally normal thing to do 🤷🏻‍♀️

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/11/2022 21:33

I go to bed early all the time! Sometimes on a weeke if my husband has a gig I'm dying to go to bed and the minute dd does at 10 I do too

PurpleButterflyWings · 20/11/2022 21:36

WAY too early for me. I would be wide awake at 5am. My normal bedtime is 11pm-midnight. Up around 8.30am. (No kids at home and WFH most days.) Even with young kids (under 7) I would never have gone at 8.30pm. Wouldn't have been able to drop off til about 11pm. I used to go about 10.30pm ... Can't believe so many posters think 8.30pm is normal! Shock

alloalloallo · 20/11/2022 21:37

Not weird at all.

DH is watching shite on the TV in the living room so I’m in bed - also watching shite on TV, but different shite.

I changed the bed earlier and have been desperate to get in it all day.

MendaciousMabel · 20/11/2022 21:39

I love nothing more than an early night in bed. If I’m home alone I usually get into bed at 8 with a book or my iPad and happily just doze!

mommatoone · 20/11/2022 21:39

Gosh , not at all! I love my bed , especially in winter when dark nights etc. Me and my little one call it the bunker cos we get all cosy😄.

Minniem2020 · 20/11/2022 21:40

YANBU. I don't think this is weird at all.
I'd love to go to bed (and sleep) at 830. I too have a DS who doesn't go to sleep until anywhere between 10 and 11pm though so I have to wait until after that.

BigScreen · 20/11/2022 21:41

I get home from work (4pm) stick my 'lounge wear' on and get in the bed. I never sit down stairs.

Backtoblack1 · 20/11/2022 21:41

This is me most nights! It makes me so happy to get into bed knowing I can have a few hours peace, arching tv and readingg on my phone.

most nights my 15 year old DD joins me for a bit and it’s lovely x

WhatIsThisPlease · 20/11/2022 21:42

I always go to bed around this time. It's my happy place. And now that I can't afford heating it's also my warm place!!

I don't go to sleep until around 10pm but love being in bed on my phone and reading. Not weird at all OP!

KangarooKenny · 20/11/2022 21:43

I love going to bed early, feels really indulgent.

Thearex · 20/11/2022 21:44

We do this, nothing odd at all- its what suits us at the moment.

DP works a rotating 12hr shift pattern. When he is on days regularly both in bed before 9. When he is on nights we have early tea, and I lock up and go up 8.30ish.

Beseen22 · 20/11/2022 21:46

When I'm on nightshift or go out with my friends DH goes to bed around 8pm. He says he's just going to get comfy but he falls asleep with 10 minutes of being in bed every single time.

Abouttimemum · 20/11/2022 21:48

DH and I regularly go to bed as soon as DS is in bed and we’ve eaten, and watch tv etc etc. nothing weird about it at all! It’s the comfiest place in the house!

Beees · 20/11/2022 21:49

Can't believe so many posters think 8.30pm is normal! [Shock]

It's no different from lounging on the sofa though. Confused No one is saying they go to sleep at 8.30 but chilling in bed at that time in the evening isn't exactly an odd thing to do.

BrutusMcDogface · 20/11/2022 21:50

YANBU; I wish I could do this! I have four kids, none of whom are asleep before 9.00 (the oldest quite frequently stays awake longer than I do). Then I have school work to do (teacher).

I hate bedtimes. I hate school work. Oh and I hate everything! (Just channelling my 13 year old who has just been breathtakingly rude to me).

FourChimneys · 20/11/2022 21:50

I often say "I'm going to bed but I'm not Going To Bed".

9.00 pm or thereabouts is lovely for a long read, or a phone chat with a friend - who is also in her bed 250 miles away.

Schlaar · 20/11/2022 21:52

We always went to bed early when I was a child, and we would read or watch tv in bed. Simply because it was warmer under the duvet and we couldn’t afford heating! This winter my husband and I have started going to bed at the same time as the kids because it’s warm under the duvet and we can’t afford to put the heating on and sit on the sofa.

I don't go to sleep until late but I've been in bed since 9 - it's warm and comfy! Plus the cat was yelling at me and I was trying to watch youtube

username112220 · 20/11/2022 21:55

Not weird at all. Sounds like bliss. I would love to be able to tuck myself into bed at half 8. Even if you do get back up at 10pm, you're already in a relaxed state for a very peaceful night's sleep. Wake up refreshed. Who wouldn't want that?

EarthSight · 20/11/2022 21:56

my friend thinks its weird that i would go to bed at 8.30pm

Your friend sounds like they lack imagination/is small minded, and you sound like you need a boost in self-confidence and a wider circle of friends so you don't have to check your perfectly reasonable lifestyle habits on the internet.

aSofaNearYou · 20/11/2022 21:56

I don't really like chilling in my bedroom but if you do, you may as well. It would be an early time to go to sleep but that's not what you're doing.

BellePeppa · 20/11/2022 21:57

I love it. I don’t even look at the time to work out whether I should go to bed I just get a ‘feeling’ that I want to go. Once I’m in bed I look at the time, sometimes it’s only 7.30 or 8 but I don’t care. I have a tv, my phone and books etc, I don’t go to sleep at that time but I just get really cosy. I prefer being in bed and watching tv rather than in the living room but my kids are grown now and do their own thing and more importantly no man around (thank gawd). My dog loves it too and sleeps on the bed and sometimes she’ll actually bark upstairs to get me to go up there 😁
