Is it weird to go to bed at 8.30pm?

DP is working, and DD's are sleeping, DS won't go to sleep until 10 but is in his room watching tv and playing quietly, so I've come up to bed. I love snuggling under the duvet and reading or watching tv it literally makes me feel so happy and content but my friend thinks its weird that i would go to bed at 8.30pm. I will need to go and put DS to sleep (he has asd and wont go to sleep earlier) and let the dog out for a wee at 10pm but until then im more than happy in bed watching tv and scrolling MN.

If DP was home id stay downstairs but since he isnt i dont see why i shouldn't be warm and cosy in bed doing the same thing id be doing on the sofa, and if anyone is worried about Ddog he is currently snoring in his bed beside me and will be unimpressed when i wake him and send him outside.

So
AIBU its really strange for an adult to go to bed that early

Yanbu theres nothing wrong with going to bed whenever you want

Sometimes I even get back into bed after the school run if everything is squared up and sorted.

I just don't get this. If you also go to bed early that means you probably spend about two thirds of a 24 hour period in bed!

I mean, dogs sleep a lot, but when they're not they're running around like crazy, but we humans are much more sedentary (unless this thread is full of sports mad posters).

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 20/11/2022 22:56

I’d love to go to bed at 8.30.... I think the last time that happened was about 5 years ago when I was seriously illl... too busy nowadays to even think of going to bed before midnight ...

ArmyofMunn · 20/11/2022 22:57

Is it because you're all trying to save on heating??

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 20/11/2022 23:00

You go to bed whenever the hell you want to! It's nobody's business but your own.

Happy sleeping!

AcrossthePond55 · 20/11/2022 23:00

DH keeps 'farmer hours' so he's in bed around 7 and up around 4am, sometimes earlier. I normally watch crap he'd hate and make a running commentary on streaming video or telly after he goes to bed, then I go to bed between 9-10pm (retired, no kids).

But when DH is gone overnight for his 'hobbies' I'm usually in pjs and in bed by 6.30 to watch 'my' shows. Mind you, I don't go to sleep til around 9 or 10, but I love having the bed to myself to starfish and watch what I want.

Schnooze · 20/11/2022 23:02

No, I’ll stay up at night or I’ll be asleep and waste the night, but I love spending hours in bed in the morning on my iPad.

8:30 is extremely late to get up though. The vast majority of households will be up before that for work, school etc.

I usually go to bed 2 hours earlier than you (admittedly am up later tonight!) but I'm also up 2 hours earlier!

8.30am extremely late to get up?! 😂Only on mumsnet! the place where loads of posters claim they go to bed at 8.30pm, and yet are still on here posting away! Sat in bed with your laptop or phone on mumsnet at 8.30pm? How odd!

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 20/11/2022 23:13

I'd need to be ill or unusually shattered to go to bed at 8.30.

Granted it’s later than most people, but it’s what I’d do if I didn’t get the school run and could wfh. Why would you get up earlier if you didn’t have to?

Exactly this! I WFH and am on flexi time. I generally get up 8.15am-8.30am, and start at 9am. Sometimes I don't get up til 9am and I start at 9,30am. I have that choice and flexibility, and no kids living at home. I used to HAVE to get up at 6.30 to 7am, to get the kids ready, and get them to school and get the bus to work for 8.30am!!! Don't have to do that now. Grin I get a lovely lie in every day Even when I WAS up at 7am though, I NEVER went to bed at 8.30pm. Very odd IMO.

The OP did ask. I am responding with my opinions. So sue me!

ColinRobinsonsFart · 20/11/2022 23:20

Not strange at all!
my DH works lates most days so I am home alone. I have been known to make myself a butty for my tea and go to bed before 7pm!
i watch Tv under the duvet and eat my picnic.
it saves having the heating on and it’s comfy!

girlmama29 · 20/11/2022 23:23

Bed is my happy place. Unless there's still things to do downstairs im usually ready and tucked up in bed for 8ish once my toddlers gone to sleep. I have a friend who is the same as yours and thinks im odd, it's not unusual for her to be trailing round Asda at 10pm with her toddler in tow, but honestly why would anyone rather be doing that than be tucked up cosy in bed?

PinkSyCo · 20/11/2022 23:27

In the winter I’m always snuggled up in bed by 8. I’m single and my adult children are either out or chilling in their own bedrooms, so why would I want to be rattling around downstairs on my own when I could be warm and cosy in my bedroom?

Schmeeeee · 20/11/2022 23:29

Perhaps I'm the only one who finds an 8:30pm bedtime for an adult strange. I can't fathom that. But then I go to bed between 12am-2pm and I know that's not normal either 😆

Changemaname1 · 20/11/2022 23:30

I love my bed ! I go when dc go bed or if dc at their dads I will sometimes get in from work at 6 shower eat and straight to bed 😂 watch tv/ read/ scroll

I very rarely watch tv downstairs , if I had a partner then we would sit downstairs together

I should add though I’m rarely actually asleep before 11-30-12

Suboptimalsitch · 20/11/2022 23:38

I live on my own. No kids. In winter I often have an early shower and get into bed and listen to the radio, watch tv or YouTube all on my iPad. It’s warmer and cosier than sitting/slouching on the sofa and I’m very happy in my nest. Who cares what might be normal. You’re not harming anyone, your happy, so go for it.

TurquoiseDress · 20/11/2022 23:39

YANBU!

Sounds amazing, wish I'd done that tonight!

Yoloohno · 20/11/2022 23:41

It’s weird how everyone is a lark and snuggles in bed at night on here.

I lie in til 9ish most days if I don’t need to work. I love my bed and it’s so comfy but I prefer to have my evenings on my super comfy sofa watching my better tv, than getting up at the crack of dawn to do what exactly? My dc are independent and downstairs is so much quieter than listening to the kids talking to friends, banging around in the bathroom.

horses for courses I suppose.

ArmyofMunn · 21/11/2022 00:12

I'm sorry but I'm getting this disturbing image that you all resemble the people in WALL-E!

12am-2am! I'm not a night shift worker lol.

But yes - I'm the same as the prev poster who said they like a lie in. I get up at 7:30am most days, but then 9am on weekends

BadNomad · 21/11/2022 00:53

It's not really "going to bed" if you plan to get up again. I have a cosy setup on the couch for relaxing at the end of the day. Legs up. Blanket draped over me. Lights down low or off. Drink(s), book, tablet, and phone. I don't "go to bed" until ready to sleep.

mycatisannoying · 21/11/2022 00:59

Nobody loves bed and relaxation more than I do. Seriously, my ex husband's nickname for me was Bagpuss Blush and I could sleep on a knife edge if tired enough.
Despite all that, however, I am with your friend. I think it's odd for an adult to have a young child's bedtime.

BuggersMuddle · 21/11/2022 01:04

Not weird. I have a little Muddle sized sofa in my study with a blanket stored nearby. It's warmer and cosier than main living area in winter unless I whack on the fire. When DH isn't here I'm right there with my Kindle, drink & snacks.

StopStartStop · 21/11/2022 01:04

Not strange. It's an unusual night if I'm still up at 9.

LikeAStar1994 · 21/11/2022 01:16

You're not going to sleep at 8:30pm you're just relaxing in bed all warm and cosy doing things you like.

I do this every single day. I take a cup of tea up and eat chocolate sometimes. I also have a mini fridge that stores all sorts of goodies Grin

Your life is your own. Ignore your friend.
