Spent 2.5 hours cooking and not even a thank you

AIBU to spend 2.5 hours cooking Sunday dinner and expect a thank you? Both my DC say thank you for dinner and help clear up. Barely a grunt from DH, let alone a thank you. You'd at least be polite after someone had gone to the trouble to cook for you wouldn't you?

@Labnehi but my assumption is not weird... whatever you had to eat today!

As other PPs have said!

Don't feel the need to apologise for calling my assumptions weird...

I don't feel any need to apologise for your odd and ethnocentric assumption, thank you!

As has been shown!

You say it isn't, I say it is. You're not correct just because others also assume....

@Labnehi Sunday dinner is usually taken to be a roast. Even though I'm a Jew and our Sabbath is Friday, I still associate Sunday with a roast from neighbours having a Sunday roast when I was growing up.

No it isn't. It might be to you and to some people, but please stop pretending everyone assumes such a thing. I don;'t know anyone who would assume that

@Labnehi you're clearly in the minority.... but that's not what the post is about!

Don't be so ridiculous. Sunday dinner is a known term for a roast dinner. Of course people eat all kinds of things for their dinner on Sundays.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 20/11/2022 20:48

No, that’s just rude. We take it in turns to cook. If he can’t even be bothered to thank you or help clean up, then I’d make sure his children know this isn’t on.

XingMing · 20/11/2022 20:48

Two chefs in this house, who propose menus to the non cook, and compete to make awesome food. The non-chefs get to eat and do potwash.

That's a big stretch you're making.

Sunday dinner in the UK usually means a roast, it's practically an ideological value. My local pub offers bookings for "Sunday Dinner" for the roast dinner it serves.

You can eat whatever you want, of course, and call it a Sunday dinner, because you ate it on Sunday, but that doesn't change the fact Sunday dinner usually means a roast...

I'm also Jewish and would also assume that the op meant a roast, fwiw. I don't think that's 'ethnocentric', I think that's understanding the culture of the country I live in.

CarpeVitam · 20/11/2022 20:52

Jeez, folks will argue about anything on here! 🙄

XingMing · 20/11/2022 20:55

If I cook, Sunday lunch often means a roast with vegetables, but there's always a bit of competitive sport about who dishes up the best veg and gravy. DH cooked a lamb curry today, as I was on a cookery course .

123boom · 20/11/2022 20:55

No I just want to know was it a roast? I’ve forgotten what the original thread was about now!

When you say roast, are you assuming roast meat and potatoes? How dare you!

It might mean roast couscous or mushrooms!

XingMing · 20/11/2022 21:00

My cookery course today and yesterday ( a Christmas present delayed by Covid) has made me eat much more than usual. Today's starter and main course would both be mains in everyday life.

VikingLady · 20/11/2022 21:05

I started treating DH like the DCs. "What's the magic word?"

SallyWD · 20/11/2022 21:19

That's rude. My DH always says thank you.

Kevintheminion · 20/11/2022 21:29

To settle the argument, it was a roast 😀. Long back story short is I feel very taken for granted...it appears I am!

My DH does the cooking in our house. I sometimes remember to thank him and sometimes don't. Sometimes I'm absorbed in my own thoughts. Have you asked him if he's ok OP?

Why on earth wouldn't you thank someone for a meal they had cooked for you ? Are you also too absorbed in your own thoughts to bother to talk to others sat at the table with you ?

Letsgetreadytoblackcurrantcrumble · 20/11/2022 21:42

I always think a roast is a bit of an easy dinner. Put the meat in the oven, do potatoes and pea / carrots etc. if you’re feeling adventurous you can do Yorkshire puddings, but still it’s much less faff than something like cottage pie, lasagne or moussaka.

I wouldn’t expect a thank you as my other half is usually doing something like taking the kids swimming while I am enjoying the peace.
