People who won't work otherwise they lose benefits

Alphavilla · 20/11/2022 09:15

Came across BBC article recently quoting a 20 year old man saying he had cut out Netflix and booze to cut his costs in these difficult times. However apparently he could not work more than his 16 hours otherwise he would lose his benefits. My DH is a manager in large organisation and he finds it difficult to get shifts/jobs covered as the employees claim they can't add more hours to their part time shift because they would lose entitlement to benefits. So there is work to be had, but it seems it is more lucrative not to work. What has gone wrong?

@Florenz

what are your criteria then for those people who should be permitted to have children.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 20/11/2022 20:39

I’m surprised no-one has espoused a variation on Logan’s Run as a good solution yet 🙄

I don't know, I haven't seen the data, which hasn't been compiled yet.

Basically look at people who contribute more in tax than they take, and who their parents were and go from there.

Imagine you'd start off with some kind of points system, everyone would be allowed to have one child, and then people would x number of points would be allowed to have a second, and everyone with y number of points would be allowed to have a third, etc etc.

Have you been at the Gin? Are you really suggesting eugenics?

MistressoftheDarkSide · 20/11/2022 20:45

Eugenics by the back door indeed.

And how did China’s one child policy end up?

Florenz · 20/11/2022 20:49

Threadkillacilla · 20/11/2022 20:43

It's really not eugenics.

What is the alternative? Carry on as we are?

medicatedgift · 20/11/2022 20:51

@Florenz so you'd breed out the disabled then. Nice.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 20/11/2022 20:51

It is eugenics. Or selective breeding if you prefer. Limiting the procreation of those deemed less worthy. At least if you espouse an unpalatable ideology you should have the guts to own it.

Ted27 · 20/11/2022 20:52

@Florenz

roaring success in China wasn’t it.

cadburyegg · 20/11/2022 20:54

everyone would be allowed to have one child, and then people would x number of points would be allowed to have a second, and everyone with y number of points would be allowed to have a third, etc etc.

And how do you propose this would be enforced?
Compulsory sterilisation for the disabled and/or low earners?
You are aware that we need people to do the low paid jobs - shelf stackers, bin men? Or do you not see these people as worthy enough to breed?
Are you also aware we have an ageing population and less women in this country are having children than ever before?

Florenz · 20/11/2022 20:55

roaring success in China wasn’t it.

They seem to be doing quite well.

medicatedgift · 20/11/2022 20:56

I honestly thought I couldn't be shocked by anything on here but I was wrong.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 20/11/2022 20:59

Actually no, China isn’t doing too well ….. they now seem to have a deficit in terms of younger people.

And I suspect a bit of an imbalance in the sexes as boys were favoured over girls with all of the grisly implications of that.

Soothsayer1 · 20/11/2022 21:01

They seem to be doing quite well.
😳

Ted27 · 20/11/2022 21:02

@Florenz

If you think that in excess of 30 million "missing ' girl babies is doing quite well.
I wonder why the policy was abandoned?

I really hope you are trolling now, God help us if there are people who really think this

Florenz · 20/11/2022 21:02

If you compare China to how it was 40 years ago when the one child policy started, to say they're doing quite well is a massive understatement.

Beezknees · 20/11/2022 21:07

Florenz · 20/11/2022 20:35

I think it's inevitable. The current system of increasing the population in order to pay the benefits of the next generation is not sustainable in the long run.

And who do you think is going to pay everyone's pensions?

Florenz · 20/11/2022 21:08

Beezknees · 20/11/2022 21:07

And who do you think is going to pay everyone's pensions?

Do you think a system where the population has to increase forever in order to pay the next generations pensions is sustainable in the long run ?

Beezknees · 20/11/2022 21:09

Florenz · 20/11/2022 21:08

Do you think a system where the population has to increase forever in order to pay the next generations pensions is sustainable in the long run ?

So how do you propose paying for pensions then? Are you preparer to pay more yourself?

MistressoftheDarkSide · 20/11/2022 21:09

I suspect that someone who favours eugenics would be advocating for euthanasia to reduce the pensions bill.

Ye Gods, this thread is becoming more dystopian by the minute….

Beezknees · 20/11/2022 21:09

Prepared, obviously.

This is the problem with the greatest of respect Cadbury. We don’t need people to empty the bins any more, nor stack the shelves.

Meklk · 20/11/2022 21:37

Really? I am sure they are all on zero hours contracts and minimum /law wage. I was looking for an additional part time job recently. Received more than 50 offers (London) and every single one was on zero hours contract.
No thanks, I did this shit in the past. All "extra" hours were late /night /all weekend shifts.
