Women in Qatar

We’ve heard a lot about the abhorrent treatment of gay people in Qatar and the appalling treatment of migrant workers who have built the World Cups infrastructure but precious little about the treatment of women (is it because we don’t have our own pressure group?). But just read the report Human Rights Watch report from March 2021and horrified that the World Cup is being held there (for some reason won’t let me link it). Basically womens rights are entirely dependent on men.

AIBU to think the media need to report more on this, why celebrate our lionesses on one hand and with the other give a prestigious event to a country where women are treated like this? It’s

Will let me link the report here

Thanks for this thread OP.

Women's rights are always bottom of the oppression hierarchy so ill treatment towards us is always being swept under the carpet.

Threadkillacilla · 18/11/2022 15:10

I wonder if the female supporters know the situation.

PrincessJanet · 18/11/2022 15:32

It would be interesting to hear the experience of female, gay etc. fans. I've looked on social media but not seen anything yet.

Does the women's world cup normally get played at the same venue?

PrincessJanet · 18/11/2022 15:33

Does the women's world cup normally get played at the same venue?

I've just googled. Apparently not. It's in Australasia next year.

I wonder if the female supporters know the situation.

I wonder how quickly they might find out if men there are Used to treating women as property?

I’m just annoyed at why there has been comparatively little reporting on this by main stream media. Their abuse of gay rights has rightly been repeatedly highlighted

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/11/2022 15:36

Good point well made OP. It's almost like the abuse of women is so prevalent it's invisible.

SavoirFlair · 18/11/2022 15:43

Define “woman”.

😃

Ponderingwindow · 18/11/2022 15:43

It’s absolutely horrifying.

These are the men’s teams, but there will be female staffers. They are being asked to travel to a country where their safety is at risk

I also saw an article talking about how the us team converted its logo to a rainbow in support of lgbtq+ rights. All I could think about was what about supporting your team members and staffers who are lgbtq+ and forced to choose between their jobs and their safety by making this trip.

The women on the support staff are their coworkers. They are essential to team operations. The lgbtq+ staff and teammates shouldn’t be in this position either.

the straight men could have taken a stand and protected their coworkers by refusing to make this trip. They failed.

Withabonussock · 18/11/2022 15:45

I thought the same. But women's rights tend to come bottom of the heap.

It’s probably a lot easier in Qatar, the way women are treated over there there’s probably a lot less men wanting to be identified as such unless they like having all their freedoms removed and told they have to have sex unless they have satisfactory excuse (I suspect “didn’t feel in the mood/my DH is an abusive arse won’t cut it).

Have you boycotted other countries hosting the Olympics or World Cup in the recent past OP? If not, why not? What's your t?

bellabelly · 18/11/2022 15:48

Thanks for this thread and the link to the article. I had no idea that women were in such a dire situation in Qatar - it really needs highlighting.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 18/11/2022 15:48

I meant to say, What's your take on them? Can you elaborate?

tootiredtobother · 18/11/2022 15:51

I said to my husband just last night that I hoped he would not have bought a ticket, (if they had been available at a price he could afford) he didn't really answer. straight men who consider themselves gentlemen don't give much thought to this, though in other conversations he has shown some awareness

Ponderingwindow · 18/11/2022 15:51

This is how Qatar treated a female World Cup official who was raped.

www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna17217

i would have thought this was worthy of cancelling the entire thing, but instead it was basically ignored.

MinnieMountain · 18/11/2022 15:54

Newsround mentioned both, according to my 9yo. Hopefully DC will be educating their parents.

It was quite widely reported at the time. I remember seeing it on the BBC website and the DM. People have short memories. It would be nice if they resurrected all the negative stories from the past few years just in time for the launch.

Oh that’s really good to know (not heard anything from my 10 year old - but then it’s not Roblox related!)

Irish woman anseo !
Our team just qualified for our first major tournament (Euros) and the hypocracy is vile.
I play and love the sport but won't be watching a minute of it. Womens game finally being respected by all and then off to Qatar?! Madness
Bar the news , coz I think shit is going to hit the fan (no pun intended)
Honestly though, I can see fans getting in major trouble over there for behaving in ways we see as normal

Crumpetloveliness · 18/11/2022 16:05

I’m an expat in Qatar, I’m treated much better here by the local populace than I am back in the UK. Locals are more gentlemanly and actually Arabic men are much more gentlemanly than UK men in pretty much ever instance.
However, I’m a UK expat and I can see how that could change for women from Africa or Asia.

Which particular countries are you thinking about. I don’t watch a lot of sport tbh because many sports are full of corrupt activities. Therefore, unless the event constantly hits mainstream media it is not on my radar.

However this event in particular has hit the news, a lot regarding LGBTQ+ discrimination within the host country. It made me wonder why mainstream media were so active on one front and inactive on another (the abuse of women) in the context of the host country (in this case Qatar) and it’s this unbalanced reporting which I have noticed here which is the question. Obviously one therefore has to refer back to the actual situation in order to assess the reporting.

I tend to boycott every international sporting event as I don’t like watching sport.

I would be very keen to hear your thoughts though about where similar lack of reporting has occurred regarding womens rights in past international sporting events. All such instances should be called out.

I'm not sure what your point is? It's better for women in Qatar than the UK? Qatar is a very racist country? You're alright Jack?

BiscuitLover3678 · 18/11/2022 16:13

I think because it is not actually illegal for a woman to exist in Quatar. They are just severely oppressed.

Pleasecreateausername13 · 18/11/2022 16:14

I’m gay, female and massive football fan.

They can take this World Cup and ram it so far up their arses. Absolute hypocrites from top to bottom.
