Women in Qatar

We’ve heard a lot about the abhorrent treatment of gay people in Qatar and the appalling treatment of migrant workers who have built the World Cups infrastructure but precious little about the treatment of women (is it because we don’t have our own pressure group?). But just read the report Human Rights Watch report from March 2021and horrified that the World Cup is being held there (for some reason won’t let me link it). Basically womens rights are entirely dependent on men.

AIBU to think the media need to report more on this, why celebrate our lionesses on one hand and with the other give a prestigious event to a country where women are treated like this? It’s

While you are on, whose human rights abuse is worse than the other, you may like to read this, which was in the news recently

www.amnesty.org/en/documents/eur45/5421/2022/en/

And I wonder how those who suffered at the hands of the British Empire would view your dismissal of them as simply foot stamping cliches. But this is Mumsnet after all.

MsGus · 19/11/2022 17:20

What Amnesty International says carry weight. So while in the UK we think we are beacons, the rest of the world laughs at our hypocrisy.

Stay ignorant and arrogant. No wonder we are sliding further and further down the list of all metrics that matter, including being an influential voice on the world stage.

FortSalem86 · 19/11/2022 17:22

Regarding the men being gentlemen. Ever heard of honour killings?

Unfortunately I think too many FIFA officials got some back handers to let Qatar host it.

KimberleyClark · 19/11/2022 17:37

As a Welsh woman I am actually really angry and sad that the first time my country has made it to a World Cup in 54 years, it had to in bloody Qatar.

elgreco · 19/11/2022 17:47

LGBTQ is around 50% male. Women are 100% female.

Males matter more.

takemetomars · 19/11/2022 21:29

@justasking111 I think you may have missed the point I was making. And no, I have no time for football and find it surprising that it has taken football of all the trivial things to highlight this issue. All the footballers who holiday in Dubai and now this? Laughable

cakeorwine · 19/11/2022 21:39

Women's rights are shocking in many countries. It's just not highlighted much - as we "have" to trade with these countries so they are often swept under the carpet.

Rights of other groups are also shocking in many other countries as well.

bluetongue · 19/11/2022 21:39

I heard a Qatari woman interviewed the other day on the BBC and according to her Qatar is the best place in the world to be a woman because you have absolutely no domestic work to do. Bad luck for the female migrant workers on a pittance making it all possible.

bohomoon · 20/11/2022 16:33

It is pure hypocrisy. The England tops have made in sweat shops in the Indian Subcontinent. What does the Pope say about homosexuality?
Any woman in the Middle East can walk down the street without a fear in the world.
Let's just rip to pieces the efforts of a non-white, non-western country for even trying to host something that is not normal or usual for them. Goodness me, what were they thinking?!
Just listening to Alan Shearer tearing down Qatar, but Newcastle is sponsored by Saudi! WTH

Do you watch the news??

I actually attended an event in Doha years ago and Alan Shearer was the unofficial guest of honour! I can't believe I forgot this!

What does it matter what the Catholic Church says?

NorthStarRising · 20/11/2022 18:39

I’m an expat in Qatar, I’m treated much better here by the local populace than I am back in the UK

That’s interesting @Crumpetloveliness
Are you married? In a respected position? Behaving within expected parameters?
Or are you a minimum wage employee?

SuspiciousHedgehog · 21/11/2022 10:43

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/qatar-women-control-google-apple-app-b2227979.html
Today I read this about an app in Qatar that exists to allow men to prevent, specifically, women under 25 leaving the country.
I do not think we can even compare the kind of oppression or misogyny we face in the UK to the complete subjugation and status as possession of the women of Qatar.
Your experience as an expat there doesn't count, you will be treated differently to their own women, which they literally own.
Blows my mind that any woman here would even attempt to justify the abusive nature of this nation's governance and customs.

XanaduKira · 21/11/2022 13:39

Well said @SuspiciousHedgehog

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/11/2022 14:45

People really seem to want women not to talk about this. If women are concerned about women's rights in their own country (which I am) they should do something about it (which I do). This doesn't mean we should ignore the subjugation of women in other countries. I'm a woman before I'm British.

Notcontent · 21/11/2022 14:53

Crumpetloveliness · 18/11/2022 16:05

I’m an expat in Qatar, I’m treated much better here by the local populace than I am back in the UK. Locals are more gentlemanly and actually Arabic men are much more gentlemanly than UK men in pretty much ever instance.
However, I’m a UK expat and I can see how that could change for women from Africa or Asia.

Wtf?? What does “gentlemanly” mean? There is so much that’s wrong and stupid with that statement, I have no idea where to even begin….

MsGus · 21/11/2022 21:39

I didn’t realise it is now a faux pas to use the word gentleman.

I dunno bout 'faux pas' but if we're being unpretentious,

Gentleman is at least 80 if not 100 years out of date, and always did assume an air of wholesome authority, simply for being an adult male.
