Wearing hats in office setting

momtoboys · 17/11/2022 13:45

I'm sure this will come back as I am being unreasonable but I want to ask this question: if you work in an office setting do coworkers wear hats? We have a fairly new employee who wears a black fedora every day. Most times it doesn't match her outfit so I don't think it is a fashion statement. Her hair was on display when she interviewed so it isn't as though she is covering what she may feel is an imperfection. Although it shouldn't because it does not affect me, it bothers me.

Many reasons why why she does.

She likes it.
Alopecia.
She's cold.
Wears a wig and this works with it.
Religion.

Cwcwbird · 17/11/2022 13:53

Why does it bother you? You admit it doesn't affect you. I can't imagine it would bother me personally so struggling to see where you're coming from

Merrow · 17/11/2022 13:54

I've worn a hat and gloves in an office before, I don't think the owner believed in central heating!

Someone wearing a hat wouldn't bother me. I'm of the opinion that fedora's go with nothing, so the lack of matching wouldn't be strike me as odd either!

dudsville · 17/11/2022 13:54

Waste not a moment more on what this other person wore!

mynameiscalypso · 17/11/2022 13:55

I know a few people in the tech industry who wear hats (often a backwards baseball cap) the whole time.

Shitzngiggles · 17/11/2022 13:56

I'd be dead jealous because I look awful in hats and I love them. Other than that it wouldn't bother me.

comedycentral · 17/11/2022 13:57

Sounds cute. What does she pair the look with? 😁

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 17/11/2022 14:00

How does her wearing a hat affect your ability to do your job? If the answer is ‘it doesn’t’, then I suggest you find something more interesting to think about.

etulosba · 17/11/2022 14:05

Sounds cute. What does she pair the look with?

A single white glittery glove.

What sort of religion is based on the wearing of a fedora?

My friend wears a hat to work most of time because of alopecia. It flares up then gets better etc, so if you saw her without her hat (happens maybe once a year) you'd think she had a full head of hair, but other times she has bald or thin patches.

Cherrytree77 · 17/11/2022 14:15

Depends on how formal/corporate the office setting is? I work in a relaxed creative sector and people wear all sorts.

She may be really insecure.

Or she may be super confident and just like wearing hats!

I think some orthodox Jewish women wear wigs, and some of them also wear a hat to cover visible hairlines or wiglines etc. From what I've seen it's normally a softer hat (like a beret) but I suppose a fedora would also do the trick (and to be honest, how would I know if the hat wearing women I've passed by aren't using them for that purpose?)

Ahaha! 😆

RambamThankyouMam · 17/11/2022 14:23

Is she Jewish?

A lot of married orthodox women cover their heads.

AriettyHomily · 17/11/2022 14:25

Jewish? Not that I could give a shit of someone wore a hat anyway.

I worked with an Orthodox Jew who wore the most amazing turban type things. Unfortunately I'd look like a potato if I tried to emulate her.

memyselfi · 17/11/2022 14:26

I can't imagine wearing a fedora in an indoor setting all day , is she not boiling ?

sakurasdream · 17/11/2022 14:28

Very odd that you give this so much thinking space. It “bothers” you, but why? Can you not do your job when she wears it? Too eye-catching? It’s ridiculous to feel entitled as if you want her to not wear it, which you haven’t mention yet. Maybe it gives her a sense of identity, or she has hair loss. Either way your feelings absolutely do not matter more than hers, think of something better to mellow about fgs.

Yes, you could well be right there. It wouldn't have occurred to me. I used to work for a Jewish family-run business, and I don't recall any of the women wearing a hat though. They were good employers and I liked working there. I only left because they sold the business.

AnApparitionQuipped · 17/11/2022 18:09

I like wearing hats - they're flattering (and my face needs all the help it can get). I don't think your colleague needs a reason to wear a hat if she wants to.

Depends on the policy. Somewhere really formal won’t accept it and if everyone else is rigidly sticking to it, then it’s a bit unfair she can break the rules. If it’s somewhere casual then it doesn’t matter.

balalake · 17/11/2022 19:55

Not seen anyone in my office (when I go there) wearing one but it would not bother me one bit.

Hadn't thought about the religious reasons there could be.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 17/11/2022 19:55

Of all the things I could get upset about, I do t think a fedora is one!

I agree.

I worked with a couple of Orthodox Jews who wore hats. It's common for the Ultra Orthodox to wear a wig and a hat.
