General election tomorrow - who do you vote for?

IaminRome · 15/11/2022 19:12

I'm so sick of this government and reading a lot of the posts on here, it feels like on the one hand, so are lots of people, but there are also lots of other people who are very sceptical about labour or lib dem or greens. Added to which, there are so many issues at the moment, I know there's a lot of GC and what makes a woman, that is particularly important at the moment, and cost of living, private rentals, the environment, etc etc

So knowing what you know about the parties, if there was a general election tomorrow, who would you vote for..

YABU - Tories
YANBU - Labour
Comment for a third option

I used to be green, but I'm so not sure any more. So I think I'd vote labour, to stand best chance of keeping Tories out. (What I'd really like to vote for is a more representative government)

Labour by preference but Liberal in this constituency to get rid of the appalling shower of grasping losers that is our current government. May they line up at the dole office clutching their P45s while we throw rotten fruit at them.

Who's going to be the government in the scenario where you won't vote for anybody because they're all misogynists @MargotBamborough?

^It's going to be one of them, right?
^
I have kids. We need the NHS to function. We need the education system to function. We need law and order to function. We need the economy to function.

The country can't afford more years of the Tories so I will vote for whoever has the best chance of unseating my Tory MP in my Tory safe seat.

That's the best that I can do.

For my kids and for my country.

Is that genuinely how you feel about your choice?

It's going to be one of them, yes.

But whichever one of them is going to win can do so without my help.

Not sure why there's so much anger being directed at me for planning to spoil my ballot instead of at Labour for being misogynistic ideologues mired in identity politics rather than sane and sensible politicians with an actual plan for fixing the country.

How exactly do you think Labour is going to fix all these things anyway? Sure, they say they'll sort out the NHS and blah blah blah, but HOW?

Because right now we have absolutely no details, and someone who is going to keep a straight face whilst they say women can have penises and if you disagree you're a bigot is not someone I would trust to run a bath, let alone a country.

"You read your left wing lies and I’ll read the truth. Now if you mention my username again I’ll instruct my legal representatives to seek a restraining order against you. I told you I was not interested in an argument with you so be warned and leave me alone you ill informed sanctimonious arse!"

Oh dear @Colourfingers2 . I think someone needs a nap.

ilovesooty · 28/05/2023 07:15

I think @Colourfingers2 should consider what he posts. You don't threaten people like that on here.

VestaTilley · 28/05/2023 07:15

Spoil ballot.

The Tories have destroyed the country. Labour would destroy women.

Tots678 · 28/05/2023 07:32

Tories as I don't want people born male to play in women's sports.
Otherwise they are all crap.

@Colourfingers2 you do realise this is an open forum where users are allowed to refer to other users, and that this is legal? But by all means throw away your money. Meanwhile could you please refer to the sources you have that you think are 'the truth'? That would be great.

It's not unexpected that you have resorted to namecalling when all I've done is politely rebutted your untrue and distorted statements on this thread.

newnamethanks · 28/05/2023 08:25

@Colourfingers2 it's a Bank Holiday Sunday and you clearly need more sleep, you sound irrational. Go back to bed for a couple of hours.

Those who do not vote are trusting someone else to vote for them, what a risky choice.

It's a bit annoying to say the least when people make comments like those quoted above claiming that Labour have given no details of their plans. They've said a lot about the NHS, though their actual manifesto hasn't come out yet. If you can't be bothered to read the details, that's on you.

The trans issue has been difficult for them without a doubt but Starmer's latest comment is that 99.9% of women don't have a penis, and he goes on to talk about the minority of people who identify differently from their biological sex who need to be protected but that women's rights won't be rolled back in doing so. It's not perfect at all, but the Labour leadership is categorically not insisting blithely that women can have penises and that you're a bigot if you disagree.

Lammy made the stupid dinosaur comment about a year ago, but since then front benchers' comments have been far more nuanced. Not ideal, but clearly moving in the right direction. There are lots of Labour supporters who have been 'captured' and they do have to be very careful not to alienate them. I think Starmer means it when he says the debate has become toxic. He's obviously trying to avoid divisive rhetoric while also trying to appease both sides, which does carry the problem of appearing weak or a bit mealy-mouthed at times, but I prefer that to the Tory's approach which is to go all out on turning it into simplified wedge issue, not giving a toss who gets hurt in the process and not giving a shit about trans people or women really. I don't love Labour's stance, but it's totally inaccurate to say the party's official position is 'women have penises and you're a bigot if you disagree.' Labour do have back benchers who are a lot more strident on the matter, but I truly believe Starmer has them under control. Unlike the Tories, who extreme right-wing back benchers have been pandered to by successive weak leaders and have pretty much wrecked the country as a result, though happily they've done a lot of damage to their own party too, which is nice.

You've looked at the state of the NHS, education, the economy, sewage on our beaches, the hit our pension funds took because of the Mini Budget, your energy bills, the price of the weekly shop, your monthly mortgage bill, and your shrinking rights, and you thought
^"Five more years of this please!"
^
That's so Brexit.

Voting to be worse off because of a slogan.

verdantverdure · 28/05/2023 10:06

I'm not at all angry @MargotBamborough

I'm bewildered.

Thee are a lot of things I want for my children, but a meaningless slogan isn't one of them.

The thought of choosing a slogan over practical and tangible things our children need is really out there to me.

Owlglasses · 28/05/2023 10:07

FKATondelayo · 28/05/2023 00:00

Just because I am not planning on voting doesn't mean I'm not politically active - quite the opposite. Showing up every 5 years to put a tick next to a stranger is not the only way to influence democracy. In fact I think it's the least effective way. You're just choosing from a range of policies you had no involvement in creating. Lobbying, campaigning and forming relationships with your local MP and councillors regardless of party is harder but more effective.

Now there's some stuff we completely agree on. I've always been a campaigner (learned that at my mother's knee and will never break the habit). It's the best way to make change and to feel that you're doing something positive in a crazy world.

100% of women don't have a penis.

Has David Lammy apologised for his comment? Has he fuck.

Stop wasting your time trying to persuade women who have very clear reasons for not voting Labour to do so. Left wing misogynists are not better than right wing misogynists.

Your time would be better spent writing to your local Labour MP or candidate and telling them that whilst you plan to vote for them, you are hearing of quite a few women who won't, until Labour acknowledge that we are a distinct category of people based on biological sex, not magic gender feels, and that we are entitled to have words to discuss our lived reality, and single sex spaces free from penis people.

Until they admit that they have got this wrong, I am not interested.

All of the people born male playing in women's sports you are currently seeing in this country is happening under a Tory government.

In the context you mean there isn’t one. No party supports your version of “women’s rights”. I personally think actions speak louder than words and the Tories’ record of damaging women over the last 13 years shouts that they don’t give a flying fuck about women.

Owlglasses · 28/05/2023 10:21

@MargotBamborough I have detailed Labour's intentions regarding protecting women's rights earlier in this thread.

I won't do it again especially as I've just read your previous post which asks us to stop wasting our time trying to persuade women who have very clear reasons for not voting Labour to do so. That's your choice, but having experienced 13 years of Tory government and its negative impact on women I will vote Labour next time.

I would also take your sensible advice on speaking to my local labour party about about women's concerns had I not already done so.

Rather than constantly saying, "But the Tories!" can we take a moment to reflect on how fucking appalling it is that there isn't one?

Why isn't Labour that party?

No need for inverted commas around "women's rights" by the way.

We DO have the right to be treated like actual human beings and not just support animals for men who think they identify as women.

Why do Labour think women and girls are less important than this tiny, self-identified, not actually remotely oppressed minority?

Thank you for speaking to your local party about women's concerns. I suggest every woman on this thread trying to convince us all to vote Labour does likewise.

If they do a complete U turn before the next election I might vote for them.

Yes they do.

Did you hear Lisa Nandy's response when asked what prison a male rapist who says he identifies as a woman should be in?

Absolutely disgusting.
