Ok. I'll be honest, this post is only a reflection of this weekend.
Peter Kay tickets flying out at over £50 a ticket and pubs in Manchester absolutely packed to the rafter's, with standing room only

Yes restaurants packed where I am, London suburbs. People I know going away summer, October half term and Christmas. Some people are just very well off.

NEmama · 13/11/2022 18:19

That's just what you have seen and maybe more representative of your own social circles.

Yabvu. There are many people struggling.

HealingbyFeeling · 13/11/2022 18:19

Not this again

AnApparitionQuipped · 13/11/2022 18:19

I wouldn't know how busy the pubs are where I am, as I can't afford to go 😂

Oysterbabe · 13/11/2022 18:20

Lots of people are struggling but lots of people aren't.

girlmom21 · 13/11/2022 18:20

The people buying Peter Kay tickets and packing out pubs aren't the people who can't afford to turn their heating on, HTH.

MakeMineALarge1 · 13/11/2022 18:20

Hit enter too soon.
Manchester was packed last night, the market's are opening up, the pub's were rammed.
Is it just me? I was shocked to see it so busy?
Or is the cost of living rise only affecting Mumsnet?

Omg these posts are so boring now.

You realise a cost of living rise doesn’t mean everyone is walking around in rags stealing stale loaves?

Flapjacker48 · 13/11/2022 18:20

Why does this post pop up every few days with almost identical wording? Hmm

ITookABathWithAinsleyHarriott · 13/11/2022 18:20

Not everyone is struggling, but obviously there are a lot of people who are.
Seeing people in pubs doesn’t mean that everyone can afford to do that.

There is no cost of living crisis clearly. They just want you to think that.

Suzi888 · 13/11/2022 18:22

YANBU but all the col payments have been issued and it was hot today! The pub was also rammed- not an affluent area.

The people who will really suffer are mostly single and /or under 35.

Overthebow · 13/11/2022 18:22

Well yes, not everyone is affected as much by the cost of living and still have money to spend on these things. We’ve had our monthly spending money decreased by a couple of hundred through cost of living but it hasn’t had a big impact on what we do each week as we started off with £1500 spending money per month. We’re still eating out most weekends having takeaway, fun days out for DC and booking holidays.

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/11/2022 18:22

Same explanation as ever

Recessions hit the bottom first and hardest, people at the bottom don’t eat out much or go to expensive gigs in the first place.

Eventually it will bite some of the middle hard, and some will loose a lot - you’ll see
more of that by early next year - but a lot of people in the middle will cut back and get through. And if they really like Peter K they’ll find a way to go.

Upper middle - some cutting back but too different degrees. These are the people that spend a lot on going out. They’ll still go out, just a little less or a little cheaper.

Top - won’t touch them.

It was the same in 2008. Busy restaurants in the affluent cities, maybe not as busy midweek as they were - but lots made it through.

Toottooot · 13/11/2022 18:23

Folk go the pub or buy show tickets - Wooptie fucking ping. 💁🏻‍♀️

Why under 35? Both me and DH are under 35, as our the majority of our friends, and don’t think we will be worse affected than anyone else. In fact not affected much at all.

use583298 · 13/11/2022 18:23

People don't mind spending their money doing something enjoyable but household bills aren't that so people may spend less on those and cut back but the same on going out

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 13/11/2022 18:23

Im not sure what your point is

There's absolutely no question that there a very serious cost of living crisis but no one thinks that means that no one is able to afford anything

The wealthy are still wealthy they just have to pay more for stuff like the rest of us. People can change what they spend their money on, they don't have to go around in sack cloth and ashes because others are suffering poverty.

So you were out in Manchester? How come you weren’t shivering at home without the heating on?

There’s a cost of living crisis don’t you know 🙄

Muchtoomuchtodo · 13/11/2022 18:24

Lidl was also packed today. Make of that what you will 🤷🏻‍♀️

Proamble · 13/11/2022 18:24

Might be a saving, go to the pub, get a nice booze jacket on to keep you warm. Make the most of the fire and running water. £5-10 for a drink, meet some friends, nice and warm, enjoying each other’s company etc. obviously some people can’t afford that, but £7 average for a nice treat and a catch up with friends - why wouldn’t you treat yourself if you can afford it?

Flapjacker48 · 13/11/2022 18:20

Because we have to remind everyone about the benefit thieves who are too lazy to work and spend their benefits on booze and fags

WhiteFire · 13/11/2022 18:25

I spent a lot of money yesterday on new sofas.

I still moan about the cost of food, fuel and petrol.

The retail park I went to was gridlocked to trying to get in (this was about 3.30 as we were leaving). I reckon people are still going places but spending less when they are there.

👌
So ‘they’ just want you to think inflation is over 10%? And food prices have increased? It’s just an illusion that energy bills have doubled?
