Ok. I'll be honest, this post is only a reflection of this weekend.
Peter Kay tickets flying out at over £50 a ticket and pubs in Manchester absolutely packed to the rafter's, with standing room only

However the media and social media seems to portray the situation as if we're all suffering to the same degree.

It's relative - for some 'cutting back' is only having two holidays this year, not three. For others, it's putting the heating on for an hour two days a week, not three.

Exactly and for us, we have only had the heating on one hour so far this winter. Im using hot water bottles, different socks, different jumpers and thermals because to us, going out is more important than having the heating on (at the moment, that will probably change once it gets colder)

So people will juggle their finances around to prioritise their preferences.

Guitarbar · 13/11/2022 18:53

People can be tightening their belts and worried about the rises without being directly on the breadline. Whilst some won't be affected at all, some will be very very badly affected, the majority are probably just reprioritising stuff; peter kay tickets instead of a takeaway a week, a meal out and a tight food budget for the week, an evening out at the market but with just enough to get a drink etc.

We were at the pub today, a Weatherspoons. Spent just over £11. How dare we!

You're not allowed to have fun!

I hope you know that money could have fed one Mumsnet family for a week with leftovers for lunches.

antelopevalley · 13/11/2022 18:55

And we are struggling. We are still going to have cheap fun.

Why does this post pop up every few days with almost identical wording? Hmm

Including errant apostrophes in plurals.

Zanatdy · 13/11/2022 18:56

Not everyone is struggling. Surely it’s a good thing that at least some people are keeping the economy going.

True!! I know I was unreasonable to spend so much.
And Weatherspoons was really busy so we were not the only ones.

Apologies for the errant apostrophe.
Hangs head in shame and Google's.

I managed to budget for a Wetherspoon's lunch with DS the other day £13 including a drink each. It was really lovely. That doesn't mean I'm not feeling the pitch. Once upon a time not so long ago I wouldn't have thought twice about going out for lunch. It's now a carefully carved out rarity.

CloudPop · 13/11/2022 18:57

Presumably some sort of "New World Order / Great Reset / do your own research " scenario

You jest. There is a thread on MN right now where a few people have said that people on benefits that have got the cost of living payment should not be going to Weatherspoon's.

I think some people don’t really understand that life in their street isn’t necessarily representative of the rest of the country, and think that if they’re watering their milk through the hole in the roof where the rain came through that everyone else is the same.

They aren’t.

thelobsterquadrille · 13/11/2022 19:00

Not everyone is struggling. Not everyone has the same priorities, either.

As an example - we haven't had the heating on since March but I know some MN'ers have had theirs on daily since about August which is bonkers to me financially, but they think I'm equally bonkers for not feeling cold yet.

DesignerRecliner · 13/11/2022 19:00

We're doing activities that were paid for in full months ago, but we're not booking more. We've cancelled/cut back on almost everything we can to hoard money as much as possible. To anyone who knows us, we're going out all the time, but that'll change as soon as January hits and there's nothing else in the calendar or the coffers

SheCameRoundAMountain · 13/11/2022 19:01

We go out still, it's just once a month or less rather than at least once a month.

Everyone cutting back similarly are still out and about, just spending less, which will have an impact.

bananaboats · 13/11/2022 19:01

So what is your aibu? I was out on Friday night and pubs were packed, I still personally have plenty of disposal income for socialising so do most people I know. Im frugal in other ways so my outgoings aren't high and have given up takeaways though the week so still have money for weekends.

Quincythequince · 13/11/2022 19:02

OP, many people are not struggling at all, and will be able to retain their current standard of living nicely, even with future price rises.

HTH

DashboardConfessional · 13/11/2022 19:02

There must be plenty like us whose mortgage hasn't changed and who have got new jobs in the last few months. If anything I'm making an effort to support the local places that I don't want to see closed down.

A cost of living crisis doesn't mean that every single person goes from disposable cash to less than zero at the end of every month.

healthadvice123 · 13/11/2022 19:03

Not everyone will be affected by it to a degree they have to stop everything , plus I would personally rather save on electric gas , food etc so I can still have some nights out as i work full time and want to do things , so i save where i can to have the money esewhere

Manekinek0 · 13/11/2022 19:03

We aren't all in the same boat. I was unaffected by the '08 crisis because I didn't own property and had a safe job.

Similarly I have not been affected by the price increases so far because I have fixed energy deals and I have increased my earning.

JennyJungle · 13/11/2022 19:05

I feel the same.

Everywhere you go. Rammed!

I went to go out for breakfast on Saturday and got turned away as they didn’t have any tables, at 9am!

It only seems to be on MN that everyone is so poor they can’t eat.

Yet in real life everywhere is so so busy!

Tsort · 13/11/2022 19:06

Some people have more money than others. This is new information? You thought the cost of living crisis = everyone in the U.K. becomes a Dickensian orphan?

Endofmyteatherr · 13/11/2022 19:06

The pubs, shops, theatres and restaurants or whatever need to be full. Otherwise there would be a reap crisis.

Things would be left derelict.

ancientgran · 13/11/2022 19:06

Went to our local steak house pub last night, it was rammed but only because they were doing a 2 meals for £12 deal. The mains DH and I had would normally cost £35, I assume they are hoping to make money on the drinks/desserts. Not much hope with us as we only had a main and a lemonade. I reckon they lost money on us.

girlmom21 · 13/11/2022 19:07

Jesus Christ @XenoBitch. Some people really hate those less fortunate don't they?!
