Ok. I'll be honest, this post is only a reflection of this weekend.
Peter Kay tickets flying out at over £50 a ticket and pubs in Manchester absolutely packed to the rafter's, with standing room only

On Mumsnet, we (apparently) only sniff a thimble of sherry at Christmas. We then beat ourselves with a stick for 10 minutes. Any more than that and you are an out of control drunk who needs to go to AA.

That's right. isn't it mumsnet? [hick!]

Are those covid crisps absolutely necessary?

So long as you know that a lot of the "haves" aren't the children of millionaires and don't own factories or the like.

Many went to the local state school and progressed to doing jobs like being a solicitor of the like. They aren't "the 1%".

I'm sure some people (not saying you) would like to lump them all in together and tax/punish people who work hard and, yes, who have earned a few more quid than some others have.

A lot of people have the narrative that if you can afford a holiday, or a night out, or restaurants whatever, then somehow that makes you 'rich' and therefore there is a massive gap between the haves and have nots.

The reality is that there is a sliding scale of income and outgoings for everyone and most people are just getting by and still enjoying the odd treat and holiday

AuntieEntity · 13/11/2022 20:19

It's a mixed bag where I am. I have one colleague who's on her third holiday of the year, whereas others are bricking it because their fixed rate mortgage is about to end. Two local businesses have put out posts on social media to say they're shuttering their restaurants for the winter and only doing takeaways because the energy bills are too high.

I don't think the cost of living crisis is exclusive to Mumsnet - and as other posters have said, I think the divide between those who can afford, and those who can't, will become increasingly more apparent.

In the meantime, if you're buying OP I'll have a large red please. Smile

Worried234 · 13/11/2022 20:20

Not everyone is skint. Many people are on a bloody good wage and can afford to enjoy themselves. Twas ever thus.... Is it that difficult to understand?

earsup · 13/11/2022 20:23

It's all relative isn't it....just had lunch with a friend who works for a multi millionaire....who is yet again chucking out all new furniture and appliances after a few months use.....i get a new washing machine...friend gets new sofas etc...millionaire owns an entire block of luxury flats in london...

Lots of people even on not "bloody good wage" can too.

Exactly as pps said. Different outgoings hence different spending powers.

Figgygal · 13/11/2022 20:28

We are in a country of haves and have not unfortunately
Glastonbury tickets sold out too
Life goes on for many

Meh I can sort of see OPs point. Yes it's obvious that you won't see the people who are really struggling out and about spending money so you'll never get an entirely accurate picture of the whole of society, but if you only paid attention to MN threads and the media you'd get the impression that we are in the biggest financial crisis the country has ever seen, and that everyone apart from the 1% would be struggling to eat and feed themselves and their kids, let alone think about spending on luxuries. Whereas actually that's clearly not the case.

I think it's hugely relevant to be aware of disconnect between what the media is telling us and our own experiences, personally, so not sure what the big issue is?

Apart from anything else, it's hugely relevant from an economic POV to see what things people cut down on and what industries still thrive etc.

But that’s because the majority on Mn are financially struggling

Its not been the middle class, boden wearing site for years.

MakeMineALarge1 · 13/11/2022 20:31

@AuntieEntity I'll happily buy you a large one and have one with you.

Ok I didn't visir everywhere in Manchester, but each place we visited was rammed, pubs were turning people away and there were queue's to get into 20 stories!

Why were you out if there’s a cost of living crisis??

DripDripDripSugar · 13/11/2022 20:34

Breaking news - A lot of people are struggling. A lot of people aren’t. A lot of people might have to tighten their belt here and there but still have disposable income. Consumer spending isn’t a bad thing.

MarshaBradyo · 13/11/2022 20:35

JennyJungle · 13/11/2022 19:05

I feel the same.

Everywhere you go. Rammed!

I went to go out for breakfast on Saturday and got turned away as they didn’t have any tables, at 9am!

It only seems to be on MN that everyone is so poor they can’t eat.

Yet in real life everywhere is so so busy!

Tg they need the custom. I agree it’s busy here too

Rippled · 13/11/2022 20:36

luxxlisbon · 13/11/2022 20:32

Yeah, spreading covid and other viruses..........

SemperIdem · 13/11/2022 20:37

The general public’s lack of critical thinking skills is by far, the political elites greatest asset.

Whereisthehugeteddybear · 13/11/2022 20:39

The CoL crisis would have had a massive effect on us as a household if it had happened 18 months ago. However I inherited some family money within that time. I actually feel really guilty that it hasn't had a huge impact yet although obviously I notice the difference in everyday spending. I did get Peter Kay tickets but they were around £45 each and for 2024 (which seems bonkers) and put on a credit card.

Goldenbear · 13/11/2022 20:39

We were thinking the same as DH went with DS to watch a football match at a pub. The pub sells very good food but the tables were reserved following the match. We were supposed to meet them but he tried two other pubs that sell good quality roasts and no room. This is in Brighton.

2ManyPjs · 13/11/2022 20:40

There's a significant number of middling income folk it hasn't hit yet, with the exception of food prices, which can be managed without too much impact. Next year will be different - deeper into recession (unemployment likely to climb), people coming off fixed mortgages, food prices possibly increasing even more and in April the price cap due to rise massively again yet there won't be govt help of £400 this time.

NightTerrors · 13/11/2022 20:40

I work in a restaurant, my hours are being cut because we aren't as busy - those who are coming in aren't tipping (and I know, many people don't like tipping) which means I have no idea how I'm going to afford my bills - I'm quickly sinking into debt - I'm terrified about what's to come. We do still get customers spending hundreds on their food bills, we do still have large groups coming out to eat because there will always be people who ate better off or even if they're not, there will always be people who will spend money they don't have, that doesn't mean there isn't a real crisis going on or that people aren't really struggling.

AutumnCrow · 13/11/2022 20:40

Maybe the poor people stayed at home.

MakeMineALarge1 · 13/11/2022 18:20

Hit enter too soon.
Manchester was packed last night, the market's are opening up, the pub's were rammed.
Is it just me? I was shocked to see it so busy?
Or is the cost of living rise only affecting Mumsnet?

I guess it's affecting the people you don't see ramming the pubs and buying Peter Kay tickets.

And if you don't see them, they don't exist! Right?

Rippled · 13/11/2022 20:42

SemperIdem · 13/11/2022 20:37

The general public’s lack of critical thinking skills is by far, the political elites greatest asset.

Where did they fail to learn them, I wonder?
Control the schools and you control the next generation of adults and so on......
