If you’re 18ish stone

Do you sweat a lot? Like excessively all the time even if you haven’t done anything?

My sister suffers so badly with it that she doesn’t like to leave the house. She says it’s because of her weight which is possible but I think it’s quite extreme and that she should see a doctor. She drinks about 9-10 litres of water a day because of all the sweating.

I know doctors aren’t sympathetic to overweight people (I’m overweight too!) but I do think she should get it looked at.

Aibu to think it could be a sign of something more serious?

I think that your sister needs to see a doctor. Drinking 9 or 10 litres of water a day is a huge amount.

Cornettoninja · 12/11/2022 18:53

I think you’re right to be concerned. I think it would be worth her getting a blood pressure monitor and recording her readings a couple of times a day for a week or so. It could also be down to other things but that’s one that could be useful to attend the doctors armed with.

Dinosaurdrip · 12/11/2022 18:55

No I don't and have never really and have probably weighed more than that. I am pregnant at the moment and have been for a 5 mile walk today and didn't sweat at all. Some people do just sweat more than other but I would definitely encourage her to get it checked out.

I'm near that weight but I rarely sweat. I'm also very tall though (5'10) so the seriousness of her weight is really dependent on her height? I'd go to the gp dining huge amounts of water etc could be a symptom of something she like diabetes. Hopefully the gp will be able to put her mind at ease. They will have options for treating excess sweating as well it doesn't need to affect her confidence.

Completely unnecessary comment..

I weight just short of 18 stone. About 17 and a half. I don't sweat terribly, only when exercising. Despite my weight I'm still quite active but I eat too much junk. Worst thing to do is be stuck in the house.

Boooooot · 12/11/2022 18:57

She’s 5ft7, size 18. She carries it fairly well, certainly doesn’t look 18 stone.

There are conditions that can make you super sweat and it sounds like this needs looking into. 9-10 litres? That’s huge volumes of liquid.

Boooooot · 12/11/2022 18:58

I’m wondering if it could be anxiety too. She says it’s worse when she walks into a building from outside and puts it down to temperature change, but she’s very socially anxious so I’m wondering if maybe this could be adding to it?

But height makes no difference to what somebody weighs? If she's 18 stone then she's 18 stone at 5 foot 7 or 6 foot 3.

PartyHelp · 12/11/2022 18:59

I weigh 20 stone and go to work every day and don't excessively sweat at all. If she is drinking that much water there is a strong possibility she has a medical condition causing the sweating and she may even be diabetic.
While 18 stone is obviously overweight I don't think it would be causing this.

Notanotherwindow · 12/11/2022 18:59

I'm 17 and don't really sweat at all unless it's very hot or I'm exercising a lot.

That amount of water a day, I'd be suspecting diabetes or something. You can end up dying of water toxicity if you drink too much.

I was replying to the poster who asked how tall she was.

I'm 5ft 7ish and weight 18stish. I'm on a weight loss journey and very active. No I don't sweat profusely unless it's extreme heat. I also didn't at 23 stone.

I'd be concerned the drinking may be indicative of something else going on too.

Absolutely agree.

Excessive thirst can be a sign of diabetes she really should see a Dr asap

If you can't even imagine being that overweight how could you possibly have a clue whether it would cause excess sweating.
The op asked for experience of people who are similarly overweight not for smart arse comments from the usual fat shaming brigade.

KitchiHuritAngeni · 12/11/2022 19:01

I'm probably somewhere round there because I had thyroid cancer, I sweat a lot when I had it the first time round, had half removed, was fine, started sweating again (and putting weight on again) and have had cancer in the other half of my thyroid confirmed now.

Could well be another issue she has, she should go for a blood test at the very least to rule anything out.

DrManhattan · 12/11/2022 19:02

Drinking alot can be a sign of diabetes
And sweating alot could be an over active thyroid. Defo worth getting checked out

Boooooot · 12/11/2022 19:02

A doctor was very dismissive of her last time but I think she should persist as I don’t think it’s normal. I feel so sorry for her though she’s really struggling. It must be so embarrassing to be sweating so much all the time.

OP posts:
mrsbyers · 12/11/2022 19:03

No that is not normal and she needs to get checked , might be diabetes ?

I understand that, but saying someone doesn't "look" a weight when they are that weight makes no difference.

Clearly my comment has upset people though so won't comment on it again.

MsJuniper · 12/11/2022 19:04

I used to be 17st and didn't sweat that much more than I do now at 11st.

Make sure she also tells them the amount of water she drinks as that is really excessive and she should insist on tests for diabetes and have her thyroid checked.
