Do you sweat a lot? Like excessively all the time even if you haven’t done anything?

My sister suffers so badly with it that she doesn’t like to leave the house. She says it’s because of her weight which is possible but I think it’s quite extreme and that she should see a doctor. She drinks about 9-10 litres of water a day because of all the sweating.

I know doctors aren’t sympathetic to overweight people (I’m overweight too!) but I do think she should get it looked at.

Aibu to think it could be a sign of something more serious?

I am way in excess of that weight and not sweating much - bit in the morning when I wake up and the bedrooms got a bit warm (as it will with two people and three dogs on the bed) and I am under two duvets... but once I am up, no..

Drinking that much even if thats an exaggeration it sounds like shes drinking an enormous amount, is not normal - I am on a diuretic for a heart problem and drinking three pints of weak sugar free squash plus multiple cups of tea and I am not sweating nor weeing excessively.

Suggest she gets a new GP.

Might be confusing litres and gallons. 10 gallons a day is excessive but doable.

It's not doable. There are 8 pints in a gallon. That would be 80 pints or about 45 litres.

10 pints would be just over 5.5l.

oopsfellover · 14/11/2022 16:51

I was about that weight till recently and was more sweaty then than now, but it wasn’t a problem as such. Agree with her getting it checked out if it’s affecting her confidence to leave the house

do you think a gallon is smaller than a litre?! 😃

Notanotherwindow · 14/11/2022 17:45

Oh fuck it, I'm wrong way round 🤣 I'm going to bed...

Notanotherwindow · 14/11/2022 17:47

I meant what milk comes in 🤣 which is not gallons. I need a day off!

Beneficialchampion2 · 14/11/2022 17:52

Most likely has hyperhidrosis.

@KitchiHuritAngeni I completely agree with you. I have had 26 bowel operations and bounce back pretty quick and yet I was traumatised by my neck surgery. I honestly felt like I had been assaulted and had been reassured that it would be very unlikely to be cancer.

Is your voice affected? I have to have some speech therapy as one of my vocal chords was knocked and it froze. It's odd not being able to sing and I sound 'odd'.

Anyway onwards and upwards. Sending hugs x

Yes, I'm not sure if my kids paid the surgeon actually 🤣 I can't shout anymore, past a certain decibel I just squeak. I could never sing in the first place either but it's now 50 times worse. I would say my voice now sounds like I've been smoking for 25 years, definitely not what it once was. The speech therapy didn't really work for me, but, again, it was over covid so it was all on video which the therapist was frustrated with, but I'll probably need to go for more after the next operation.

Its a weird one because people say you're 'lucky' it's 'only' thyroid cancer, but its still scary, and life changing in a lot of ways.

Sorry you're going through this (and more by the sounds of it) life's just shit and unfair sometimes 💐

Drinking 9-10L a day is truly excessive - that amount could and would lead to water intoxication/poisoning where is causes all your cells to become oedematous and your kidneys will struggle to filter it all...sweating or not.

Unfortunately her weight will be a direct contributing factor to any potential diabetes, PCOS and/or mental health problems.

She should still go to a GP for further testing...bloods etc, however she shouldn't be surprised or offended if he mentions losing weight again.

Hope she gets the answers she needs and gets better.

Yup, I was hospitalised with hyponatremia last year, from constantly drinking water. My kidneys were on the verge of failing and I was very, very ill. Took me weeks to recover.

OP, I really hope your sister gets taken seriously. Drinking 9-10l per day is nowhere near normal - I was ill after drinking 4-6l over a sustained period!

Shiningsilverargent · 14/11/2022 18:52

Not read the entire thread so might have already been mentioned.

Is it a new thing? Excessive thirst is a sign of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Has she been tested for type 2?

Shiningsilverargent · 14/11/2022 18:54

She’s just tested her blood and it’s 8.3. She has been eating chocolate. Is that high for a non diabetic?

yes, it’s a little high but by no means excessively so. If she recently ate chocolate it’s probably not bad at all. She needs a blood test to rule it out.

So she’s managed to get a gp appointment with her new gp surgery this week so fingers crossed they will be much more helpful!

I was with her today for a few hours and she had a 75cl bottle that she refilled 5 times. And that’s just in a few hours. I am very worried about her. We were stood outside in the freezing cold and she was in a T-shirt. Any building we walked into she just started pouring with sweat. She was so embarrassed I just feel so awful for her.

I was 26 stone at one point and I've never sweated that much so I don't think it's purely weight related. The drinking 9-10 litres of water is very very worrying though and she should see a GP asap about that (and mention her excessive sweating too of course)

I'm so pleased she has an appointment. I was starting to feel worried. Please keep us updated
