If you’re 18ish stone

Do you sweat a lot? Like excessively all the time even if you haven’t done anything?

My sister suffers so badly with it that she doesn’t like to leave the house. She says it’s because of her weight which is possible but I think it’s quite extreme and that she should see a doctor. She drinks about 9-10 litres of water a day because of all the sweating.

I know doctors aren’t sympathetic to overweight people (I’m overweight too!) but I do think she should get it looked at.

Aibu to think it could be a sign of something more serious?

The comedian Lee Evans sweats a huge amount when performing. Obviously performing is hard, but he has to shower half way through a performance. I googled to see if he has a condition that your sister may have too but nothing came up. I don't think it's normal for anyone to sweat excessively when inactive.

BellePeppa · 12/11/2022 19:28

She should definitely get tested for diabetes just in case. Maybe she should drink liquids with added electrolytes instead of just plain water? (I’m no expert though).

She will only drink water unfortunately (and wine).

If she had GD does she still have a monitoring she could use to check herself?

But height makes no difference to what somebody weighs? If she's 18 stone then she's 18 stone at 5 foot 7 or 6 foot 3.

You're missing the point. Someone's height very much matters when considering how they carry the weight Hmm

Boooooot · 12/11/2022 19:34

She has checked a couple of times when she’s had the high blood sugar feeling but it’s all been normal. She wants to get the insulin resistance test which is a bit different apparently. She has dark patches of skin, skin tags, excessive sweating, excessive body hair and extreme thirst.

i had to have my groin lymph nodes removed which now means i have excess fluid that causes my legs, feet and ankles to swell, i need to take diuretics, i have gone up from 14 to 16 stone in a year because of this, i have to limit my fluid intake to no more than 2 litres per day, some days when it has been hot i have drank more and this has caused excessive sweating to the point that some nights my sheets are so wet they need changed. your sister is drinking way to much water and it also sounds as if she could be diabetic, please get her to see a doctor and to be honest with the doctor about how much water she is drinking which may also be causing her weight gain.

She’s 5ft7, size 18. She carries it fairly well, certainly doesn’t look 18 stone.

I am this same weight and size / height. I don't sweat doing every day stuff but I do if I'm busy running round the house doing jobs etc, exercising etc. I don't sweat walking round tesco for example. I drink 2-3 litres of water a day. She should see a GP.

FavouriteDogMug · 12/11/2022 19:38

I agree that the amount she drinks is more concerning than the heavy sweating and she should get that checked out. Her doctor sounds awful so she should definitely ask for a different GP.
Her weight could be a contributing factor but she still may need some medication to overcome the issue. If it was something like diabetes, for example, it could be dangerous to continue with high blood sugar while she is losing the weight. That would take some time. She might need medication right away, and then it would be adjusted if she was able to lose weight and improve her diet.

BaconCabbage · 12/11/2022 19:39

No I don't think this is her weight. I agree with others that she should definitely go back to the doctor/speak with a different doctor and mention both the sweating and how much water she drinks

GallbladderWoes · 12/11/2022 19:42

Does she take anti depressants? Could she be perimenopausal? I'm a similar weight and those factors really affect me. I'm so extremely heat intolerant

Boooooot · 12/11/2022 19:44

She not on any medication currently (long story!) but she used to be on mood stabilisers. She’s only 28 so I’m not thinking menopausal.

I would be worried about her heart over working and causing sweating and diabetes for all the water drinking. I am a size 20 and no sweating here!

Multipleexclamationmarks · 12/11/2022 19:58

She sounds like my adult dd. She has pcos and a thyroid problem. She needs to insist on blood tests and drink less.
I'm around 17 stone and am not sweaty.

whynotwhatknot · 12/11/2022 20:11

i do sweat alot am overweight too but i dnt drink that much

she definitely should be tested for diabetes again

Murdoch1949 · 12/11/2022 20:13

9/10 litres of water daily, that’s dangerous, it could affect her as seriously as her excess weight.

Boooooot · 12/11/2022 20:14

She’s just started going to gym too so I’m worried the water intake will go up

Your sister is drinking FAR too much. I was told by a Urologist that I drank too much - I was drinking about 7 pints (about 3 literes) a day. He told me to cut it by half, which I found very difficult to do at first (I was thirsty all the time)and then he told me to make it 2 pints a day (I can't do that, I drink about 4pts, which is 2 litres) Is your sister Diabetic?

BosaNova · 12/11/2022 20:17

Now when inactove. That amount of water is not healthy. From my experience, she is in habit of brinking rather than actually needing it.

Was she on lithium?

Boooooot · 12/11/2022 20:19

She even wakes in the night to drink. She had a litre bottle that she carried with her everywhere. She drinks 2 litres before she’s even dressed for the day in the morning. Another litre with breakfast. She will drink another litre in the car int he way to work. She works int he community and will fill her bottle at each clients house. It’s a lot.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 12/11/2022 20:20

Does she pee a lot too? Did she take Lithium? There is a rare condition called Diabetes Insipidus which creates excess urination and excessive thirst. I can sometimes be caused by kidney damage from Lithium.

She was but this was 2 years ago now.

OP posts:
ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 12/11/2022 20:20

It can

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/11/2022 20:21

Wow. Your sister is drinking more than double what is recommended for her weight. The kidneys can only process about a litre of water an hour and it is important she doesn’t chug too much per hour as a pp said this is dangerous, potentially fatal. It sounds as if she needs investigating to see if there is any underlying cause or if this is hyperhidrosis, which can be managed.
