If you’re 18ish stone

Do you sweat a lot? Like excessively all the time even if you haven’t done anything?

My sister suffers so badly with it that she doesn’t like to leave the house. She says it’s because of her weight which is possible but I think it’s quite extreme and that she should see a doctor. She drinks about 9-10 litres of water a day because of all the sweating.

I know doctors aren’t sympathetic to overweight people (I’m overweight too!) but I do think she should get it looked at.

Aibu to think it could be a sign of something more serious?

But height makes no difference to what somebody weighs? If she's 18 stone then she's 18 stone at 5 foot 7 or 6 foot 3.

Someone who is taller will naturally weigh more and be healthy. Eg. 8-9stone would be a healthy weight for a shorter person. It would be underweight for my height for example. It also depends on how much muscle someone has compared to body fat as muscle is heavier. So yes it absolutely makes a difference.

Boooooot · 12/11/2022 19:05

She’s applied to switch doctors surgery’s as they were very rude to her when she asked for a blood test.
Hoping that she will get somewhere with them.

I understand that, but saying someone doesn't "look" a weight when they are that weight makes no difference.

Clearly my comment has upset people though so won't comment on it again.

Good.

A doctor was very dismissive of her last time but I think she should persist as I don’t think it’s normal. I feel so sorry for her though she’s really struggling. It must be so embarrassing to be sweating so much all the time.

Some doctors aren't great, I'd suggest she sees a different one next time and hopefully she'll have a better experience with them.

thelobsterquadrille · 12/11/2022 19:06

I don't think it's normal in the slightest. Neither is drinking 9-10 litres of water.

Has she been checked for diabetes?

Borisisafecklesstoad · 12/11/2022 19:06

Is excessive thirst not associated with Diabetes? I would tell her to get to the gp as soon as possible

Fundays12 · 12/11/2022 19:07

She definitely needs to get checked we drinking that amount of water could be a sign of diabetes

TiptoeThroughTheToadstools · 12/11/2022 19:08

I am 18 stone and 39, I sweat ridiculously. Its fucking awful at night, my sheets, jammies etc are soaking. During the day it's between my legs, my under arms, my under stomach 😒 and my bum, it's horrible. I've been heavy for a good few years now but its never been like this. I actually wonder if I'm early menopause.

Boooooot · 12/11/2022 19:08

She had gestational diabetes when she was pregnant and is overweight so is in a high risk category. She asked the doctor about getting a blood test for insulin resistance and she also had a lot of symptoms of PCOS which overlap with type 2 diabetes.

Doctor said “you have 2 children already so why do you care about PCOS. And you will have been tested for diabetes when you had the bay so I’m not doing it again. Try losing some weight.”

baby was born over a year ago!

kitcat15 · 12/11/2022 19:11

She could seriously die drinking that volume of water

Afterfire · 12/11/2022 19:11

I’m very overweight and I definitely sweat more but it’s a vicious cycle staying in to avoid it as she will just either stay overweight or get fatter - and I say that kindly, I need to lose at least 4 stone and I am making myself walk for 1.5-2 hours briskly a day at the moment trying to get fit and I have lupus. My joints hurt like hell and I sweat like a pig but honestly I have to do it for myself and my health. However; if your sister is drinking that much as well I do think she should see a doctor like others have said to rule out anything else going on.

What?! She needs to report that gp. I have gestational diabetes now and Ive already been told I need to get tested 12wks post birth via gp and then yearly via gp because your risk of developing type 2 jumps to 50% following having gestational diabetes. That's insane that's the response she got. Definitely would warrant a complaint.

PeloFondo · 12/11/2022 19:13

Not normal. I was 18 stone and a bit (size 16) and not much sweating except when exercising. Or under my arms if it was hot

Boooooot · 12/11/2022 19:14

She already has a complaint going about something else so she’s going to add that into it. She’s having such an awful time.

PotatoFamily · 12/11/2022 19:14

I’m 18st and 6ft tall but I don’t sweat much. That sounds excessive

scoobycute · 12/11/2022 19:16

Drinking 9-10L a day is truly excessive - that amount could and would lead to water intoxication/poisoning where is causes all your cells to become oedematous and your kidneys will struggle to filter it all...sweating or not.

Unfortunately her weight will be a direct contributing factor to any potential diabetes, PCOS and/or mental health problems.

She should still go to a GP for further testing...bloods etc, however she shouldn't be surprised or offended if he mentions losing weight again.

Hope she gets the answers she needs and gets better.

BabyMomma2021 · 12/11/2022 19:18

I weigh slightly more and don't excessively sweat. I would defo discuss with GP.
Such a shame about dismissive doctors but keep pushing because they arent all like that.

illiterato · 12/11/2022 19:18

I thinK she needs to go back to GP and approach it from the perspective of drinking 9-10L per day ( maybe keep a diary for 2 weeks of time and volume- actually measure it). That is a crazy amount. Just for context, I used to trail race ( run) in Asia and I would sweat so heavily in that heat over 30k that I would be able to wring my clothes out repeatedly. I was still only drinking about 5-6L over a race day.

waterlego · 12/11/2022 19:20

Not sure weight has much to do with how much someone sweats.

I am not and have never been overweight but have had periods of excessive sweating during my life. I assume it’s partly just how I am- I have always sweated buckets during exercise- but some of mine has almost certainly been linked to anxiety. When I’ve been in an anxious phase, I can feel actually quite cold, but still be sweating buckets under the arms. It’s actually happened more in winter than summer.

Mine seems to have resolved by itself 🤞 But I think your sister should seek medical advice, especially given how much she is drinking.

gamerchick · 12/11/2022 19:21

You can buy blood sugar monitors. I think I'd pick one up and test myself in her shoes.

BloodyShoes · 12/11/2022 19:22

I was that weight at the beginning of this year. I only had a problem in the extreme heat. I think that water Intake is excessive. I also never had the issue of Drs disregarding me due to me weight.

CockSpadget · 12/11/2022 19:22

Her doctor is a fat shaming knob! If she had GD, she is supposed to have been routinely checked for diabetes a year after giving birth. She definitely needs to go back and see someone else, that amount of fluid per day is not normal.

SolemnlySwear2010 · 12/11/2022 19:22

I am a similar weight / height and I sweat loads. I have been put on medication to help, but I also have other health issues such as hashimotos disease.

She should definitely see a GP - even if its just to get medication to help.

Cranarc · 12/11/2022 19:23

I don't sweat all that much unless I'm having a menopausal night sweat.

At my heaviest I was nearly 18 stone but it did not make me sweat much more than I always have done.

Fluffygreenslippers · 12/11/2022 19:24

Fat or thin I’ve always been incredibly sweaty. In fact the fitter I am the sweatier I become (which is apparently a thing!) I’ve had everything checked, BP, blood sugar etc etc and have just accepted my sad fate of being horrifically sweaty. It sucks, I have to live in black in the summer. It might not be her weight she might just be naturally sweaty, I sympathise.
