Mine are:

Feature Walls
Pampas Grass
Crushed Velvet
Hanging Lights - all on the same beam
Shiny furniture

My house is white and I love it - contrasted with darker wood, artwork, plants and colour from things like cushions etc. and to some that’s absolutely boring and that’s ok.

Grey paint.

Words on the wall eg “live laugh love”

Pineapples. Why is there so much pineapple wallpaper?

In kitchens, that row of hanging lights that designers always wanna put over the island / breakfast bar. Lights belong on the ceiling where no one bumps their head on the lamp.

Perfectlystill · 12/11/2022 08:18

Freestanding baths! I hate them. Water slops over the sides, there's nowhere to put your soap/book/phone, just urgh.

KimberleyClark · 12/11/2022 08:19

Dark hallways
Generic art chosen because it matches the colour scheme

BirmaBrite · 12/11/2022 08:27

Tiny, fragile antique furniture, that I am afraid to sit on.

Charlize43 · 12/11/2022 08:27

Astro turf / fake grass. So totally soulless and unnatural.

I don't mind patio gardens as long as there are plenty of planters / pots / and flower beds and it doesn't look like an empty car park with a sofa dumped in the middle.

Benjispruce4 · 12/11/2022 08:33

I like can appreciate different styles but my one big no no is people using the BIG light in living rooms- get a lamp!

Bogofftosomewherehot · 12/11/2022 08:42

Grey, grey and more grey!!!!!

TrickyD · 12/11/2022 08:46

Three piece suites
Corner sofas
New furniture
Big televisions
Family photos on walls
Crushed velvet
Feature walls
UPVC window frames
Plantation shutters 1000s of miles from any plantations

Bluesheep8 · 12/11/2022 08:46

Televisions on walls
Feature walls
Black taps

wallpower · 12/11/2022 08:49

why would water slop more over a freestanding bath? does every non free standing bath have space for soap & phone? We have a small table next to ours & a window shelf.

OoooohMatron · 12/11/2022 08:51

I personally don't like big open plan spaces. I like separate rooms. Also I like carpet, not hard floors, except in kitchens and bathrooms.

wallpower · 12/11/2022 08:52

Also people in big houses, I'm talking 4 bedrooms for a family of 4, who convert their garage and drive so that they can no longer accommodate all their vehicles.

What do they covert their drive into? seems weird to deliberate lose your drive & off street parking!

wallpower · 12/11/2022 08:53

deliberately!

Ragwort · 12/11/2022 08:54

I love a big 'main' light in my living room ... we do have lamps but I hate sitting in a gloomy room ... I like bright light Grin. It's a constant bone of contention between my DH and I ... in fact as we have a long thin living room (which is a pain itself) I have a light bulb in the light fitting at 'my' end of the room and he doesn't at 'his' end of the room ... no - we would never sit on the sofa next to each other!!

I also hate big kitchen diners with an island unit, often featured in home interior magazines with a twee comment about the 'kitchen being the heart of the home' ... 'the DC can do homework whilst I am cooking .... I can chat to my guests whilst cooking' ... who wants to talk to guests when you are knocking up a white sauce or steaming veg ? Hmm.

HeraldicBlazoning · 12/11/2022 08:54

Any interior design "scheme" which has been lifted directly from the Next/Ikea catalogue with zero personality or individuality. Everything matchy matchy and DULL.

HeraldicBlazoning · 12/11/2022 08:57

Oh and vertical blinds.

Should be banned unless you actually live in a dental surgery.

MooseBreath · 12/11/2022 08:59

Lack of colour/only neutrals used.
Minimalist to the point that it looks like nobody lives in the house.
Pot lights.
Black leather sofas.
Shiny white kitchen cupboards.
Open plan to the point of no separation.
Everything "on trend" with no personality or individuality.
Shallow sinks.

I LOVE my wall mounted tvs. Mine are done properly though, with no wires hanging down - so I’d agree with wall mounted on that one.

I don’t think white looks cold and sterile either. I think everything white can looks like a therapists office though maybe?

I also love California interior aesthetic, but I just don’t think it would work as well in the UK.

Not sure that room is what folks mean when they say they dislike white, not least as it’s actually pale grey /oyster 😄

CornishGem1975 · 12/11/2022 09:04

"Coffee table" books
Rugs on top of carpets
Shutters on windows
Velvet anything
Plants everywhere (some are fine, not like a jungle)
Massively over decorated downstairs loos
Radiator covers

Stangerthings · 12/11/2022 09:07
  1. Grey everything.
  2. Cheap laminate floors with no rugs
  3. Cheap ornaments
  4. Pine furniture
  5. Pictures and mirrors on the wall too high up
  6. Fluffy toilet seat mats
  7. Dispensers on the kitchen wall for everything from oxo cubes to bin bags
  8. Plastic plants
  9. Curtains with not enough fabric in them.
  10. Ghastly strips of wall paper in the middle of the wall to look like a dado.

Freestanding baths! I hate them. Water slops over the sides, there's nowhere to put your soap/book/phone, just urgh.

Surely water only slips over the sides if you over fill, same with a bath attached to a wall. Which also has a side and end effectively free standing? You also just put a bath tray over it or have a small unit at the side? It doesn’t make logical sense the water slops over on a free standing but not when it’s attached to a wall.

GrunkleStan · 12/11/2022 09:08

Grey everywhere - I like grey, but not everywhere
Mirrored furniture
Badly done diy
Cables everywhere (we're guilty of this)
Shiny tiled floors
Laminate
Fake grass
Very dark painted walls
Inspirational quotes on walls
Decking
Things made out of decking
Dark coloured grout on white tiles
Too much clutter / fussiness

Mind you, I'm sure rheres plenty we have that would annoy other people!

ChineAndWheeseParty · 12/11/2022 09:11

What a bitchy thread

KimberleyClark · 12/11/2022 09:17

Period houses where original stained glass has been taken out and replaced with plain or leaded glass.

AnnieJ1985 · 12/11/2022 09:17

I love houses that feel lived in, and reflect the owner's personality, whatever that is.

We finally bought after years of renting greige houses that always had a mis-match of the landlords old furniture.

We are having fun decorating to our own style (or lack thereof) - lots of colour and texture. Nothing matches, but everything goes together. Mix of new and old furniture and furnishings. "Eclectic" would probably be the kind way of saying it's a bit like a jumble sale puked in here.

Some of my friends have beautiful "Next" homes that aren't to my taste, but they are lovely.
