Mine are:

Feature Walls
Pampas Grass
Crushed Velvet
Hanging Lights - all on the same beam
Shiny furniture

My house is white and I love it - contrasted with darker wood, artwork, plants and colour from things like cushions etc. and to some that’s absolutely boring and that’s ok.

-Grey everywhere- as in grey carpets , kitchen, living room , sofas, bedding. When I was looking for a house to buy, I immediately discounted the all grey houses.
— decor which is too modern - footballers style

country style kitchens.
— too many colourful walls. I only like white or very pale coloured walls

too much pine furniture

really dislike a lot of wood furniture ( love dark wood flooring) . Wood furniture always looks heavy and old fashioned -the odd piece is fine though

kitchen Islands in small kitchens

plastic ‘grass’

I have decor choices that other posters dislike. I don’t get offended because I love my home

camelfinger · 12/11/2022 07:11

Too much seating. I’m probably just jealous but when I’ve looked at big houses on Rightmove they will often have:
A massive island with loads of stools
In the same kitchen a big kitchen table with several chairs
A big sofa in the kitchen
A separate dining room
Loads of garden seating.
Random chairs dotted about all over the place.

it probably doesn’t help as Rightmove photos are by definition empty of people but I wonder how it feels to live there with all these chairs everywhere, does it feel lonely if they aren’t occupied?

Karwomannghia · 12/11/2022 07:11

I really wanted a pink bathroom suite but it was so hard to find. Did pink walls instead.

PutYourShoesOnWereLate · 12/11/2022 07:12

What is a karate chopped cushion? And why why why would someone not have a door on their en suite? Sounds and smells 🤮

IHeartGeneHunt · 12/11/2022 07:13

Grey and white
Terraced houses knocked into half-arsed open plan so the freezer is stuck out in the middle room.

I'm never going to own a house though so really what do I knowGrin and my council flat is less chic, more shabby!

PutYourShoesOnWereLate · 12/11/2022 07:13

@camelfinger what's wrong with garden seating? It's nice sitting in the garden.

hamstersarse · 12/11/2022 07:14

I often really hate the huge open plan kitchen / diners.

People don’t seem to be able to furnish the space properly. None of it flows, there always seems massive wastes of space, and jarring demarcations. And basically all furniture looks too small and stuck to the sides

I am also allergic to bad lighting….spotlights, ‘big’ lights overhead. No way.

Illbeindenial · 12/11/2022 07:18

Greytea · 12/11/2022 06:41

Shutters
TVs mounted on wall.

I LOVE my wall mounted tvs. Mine are done properly though, with no wires hanging down - so I’d agree with wall mounted on that one.

I don’t think white looks cold and sterile either. I think everything white can looks like a therapists office though maybe?

I also love California interior aesthetic, but I just don’t think it would work as well in the UK.

YES karate cushions
Navy fecking blue
painting the entire exterior window surround black (frames only is acceptable)
fireplace filled with unburned logs as decor

FourChimneys · 12/11/2022 07:20

Grey
Large television screens
No books
Random words eg HOME

I saw a house on RightMove that was a bedroom, study, shower and toilet in one room - no walls and all carpeted. And it was in a nice area and the rest of the house looked fine.

Could you imagine being on Teams and seeing someones partner on the toilet behind them …

I like a house that's evolved over time.

crumbsneverdid · 12/11/2022 07:24

Canvas'
Fake plants/flowers/leather
Grey
Throws + too many cushions
Most light shades
Heavy furniture (dining chairs you can barely lift to pull out)
Big armchairs

Mombie · 12/11/2022 07:26

shiny, plasticky laminate flooring.
all beige/white/grey everything.
Impractical sinks with straight edges and tight corners.

We have been house hunting and it is lovely to see homes that are clearly loved and lived in. The best has to be the home of a comic book lover. There were figurines in every nook and cranny, Star Wars battle scenes in plant pots, comics as wallpaper. It wasn’t beautiful but it was so refreshing and so clearly special to somebody.

Awoooga · 12/11/2022 07:26

I hate that I am terrible at interior design. I’ll pick out a bunch of stuff that in my head will look great, but in reality looks shite. Wish I had an eye for that type of thing.
I do like grey and mustard yellow together (told you) although that geometric wallpaper in those colours wasn’t nice when it first became popular and still isn’t.

katienana · 12/11/2022 07:26

I hate tiny tvs, especially if you watch TV every night get a decent fucking TV.
Scatter back sofas. They look like they'll be worn out in 5 minutes.
Kids bedrooms in "skandi" or "monochrome" designs, where child has had no input or choice into the theme. My kids have space themed and lego themed rooms.
Faux foliage walls, must be a nightmare to dust
Anything that's tricky to clean
Shiny black kitchen tiles. Have these in my kitchen and hate them. Takes hours of buffing to get them streak free.

MarianneVos · 12/11/2022 07:30

shrunkenhead · 12/11/2022 06:37

Grey everywhere
TV on wall
Huge TV
TVs everywhere/every room
Carpet
Gadgets
Speakers and wires
Ensuites
Plastic
No bookcases or books
Shiny kitchen cupboards (usually grey or cream)
Doors with glass in
Those silly balconies that you can't even get on they're so small - really don't see the point!
Feature walls/one wall with HUGE patterned wallpaper on
Door stops in kids' bedrooms (never understood this! Why aren't they allowed to close their doors?!)
Ornaments of faceless people supposedly depicting the family set up

Door stops - to stop then playing with the door and chopping their/each other's fingers off.

I've just bought a house that's white everywhere and I hate it. I also hate magnolia/beige everywhere, words, and too small TVs. Furniture for sitting on that's chosen for looks and not comfort.

Oh, and kids' rooms that are styled by an adult rather than letting a child choose.

RedDwarfGarbagePod · 12/11/2022 07:30

Doors with glass in them

My grandparents had these! I really liked them (very 60s - full glazing but with stripes inside the glass).

I'm now gradually replacing our crappy cheap cardboard interior doors with half-glazed wooden ones. We don't have windows in our hall and landing, so the glass helps bounce a bit more light around. When I do the bedrooms, though, I will be adding solid blinds to the bedroom sides!

JosephFrancis · 12/11/2022 07:31

Fake panelling.
Everything looking like it's off Mrs Hinch's Instagram page with inexplicable strings of micro fairly lights trailing across grey sofas and cream blankets
No evidence that anyone lives there- show home presentation. It weirds me out immediately.

Ridelikethewindypops · 12/11/2022 07:32

The only thing I like or dislike in a house is the feeling you get as you walk in. Does it feel warm/ welcoming/ lived in? Does it reflect the personalities ( all of them) of the people that live there? I agree with the pp that said a house should evolve over time to fit the changing lives of the people that live there.
I don't like houses that are overly styled and too tidy. Tidy houses put me on edge.

JosephFrancis · 12/11/2022 07:34

Huntswomanonthemove · 12/11/2022 06:07

TV over the fireplace.
portrait of family over the fireplace
No fireplace
Range cookers
Beams
Bath in the bedroom
En suite without a door
Big leather sofas
White kitchens
Conservatories

I absolutely love my range cooker!

ohlookout · 12/11/2022 07:35

Hearts

Lcb123 · 12/11/2022 07:36

Grey everything. Massive corner sofas in small rooms. Fake plants inside, fake grass outside (so bad for the environment). Log burners when you have gas central heating (so bad for air quality)

Crayfishforyou · 12/11/2022 07:39

Anything dangling on a hairy string
grey (we have grey in our house and I hate it)
mirrored furniture
crushed velvet
Scandi stuff, I’m aware I’m probably in the minority there.
doilies under vases and things
TVs over fireplaces. They are too high to watch comfortably

littlelandlord7 · 12/11/2022 07:40

Brilliant post OP.

@Leafblowertime agree!

Beds that are too large for the room

Nowhere to put a drink by the sofas/chairs

Not enough lighting/lamps

Nothing old. When everything is ikea new and there's no collected objects/furniture over the years. It's tells a story and radiates personality.

Curtains that don't fit. Or they've been put up and left extra rings on etc.

Fake fireplace

Not enough planting or pot plants outside

Fake grass
