Mine are:

Feature Walls
Pampas Grass
Crushed Velvet
Hanging Lights - all on the same beam
Shiny furniture

My house is white and I love it - contrasted with darker wood, artwork, plants and colour from things like cushions etc. and to some that’s absolutely boring and that’s ok.

Big interior design pet peeve: why don't houses in the UK EVER have laundry chutes? 😡

Saz12 · 13/11/2022 23:04

@Squeakycatflapper Id love a ha-ha.

I hate cat litter trays, large flatulent dogs, and thats about it.

The only thing I dislike about houses is if there folks living there are shit, mean and devoid of empathy.

I didn't think this thread was about judging other people's taste choices. I thought it was about what each of us would never do in our own homes.

My sister has parquet flooring and I think nothing of it. But I wouldn't buy a house that had parquet because I hate it. I don't pick my friends because of their style/decor choices. But that still means I can have my own taste that differs from theirs.

Did I miss the point of the thread?

marmerdeeltje · 13/11/2022 23:08

@PayPennies come on it's fun to see people pile in on the latest must-have in a never ending circle. A home is should be for its people, not instagram or the neighbours.

Grey or stark white everything

Fake plants

Zwicky · 12/11/2022 07:02

Hob on a kitchen island with a “feature” extractor fan

Shiny kitchens - esp dark grey but any other colour too.

Shiny carpets - again, esp dark grey. Like most people I am beyond done with grey everything

furniture that doesn’t fit the room - huge corner sofa and cinema size tv in small rooms - huge rooms with normal sized furniture pushed around the edge.

Wall decals. Fair enough in a kids room. Words are the worst. Especially the bossy instruction ones - Relax, bathe, eat etc.

plastic kitchen sinks.

huge white canvas with family members lying on the floor grinning at the camera.

rainforest showers

breakfast bars

I don’t mind if you’ve got no books. My books look like a junk shop and are in a spare room.

Plastic kitchen sinks? Have I missed a trend?

GreyGreyGrey · 13/11/2022 23:32

Just curious about the plantation shutters…if one wants light, but also privacy, what is the option? Lace curtains? Sheers? A whole bunch of house plants strategically blocking the window?

They’re known in the trade as ‘composite’. I hate them too. The white ones collect dirt and grease and limescale in the texturing and require bleaching every 5 minutes. The dark ones, you can’t even use bleach.

Give me stainless steel or ceramic every time.

Buggersticks · 13/11/2022 23:35

I don't give cluttered minimalist fuck, tbh. Everyone has their own style and taste. Some people can't live with lots of stuff, some can't live in bleak sparce white boxes. I'd never have an oversized TV bolted to the wall so high up, I have to crink my neck like I'm sat on the front row at the Odeon. But that's me, and my normal TV. In my happy colourful home.

Fxxoffuliars · 13/11/2022 23:47

Grey/white/neutral tones
cheap ornaments
tacky light fixtures
fake wooden furniture
crushed velvet with diamantes
mirrored / diamonte furniture
fake flowers and plants
graphic wall design
Tripod lamps
anything that looks like bnm furnishing

DripDripDripSugar · 13/11/2022 23:49

Wall mounted TV.

7eleven · 14/11/2022 00:03

carpets
clutter
overcrowding
chintz
leather sofas
fake plants
feature walls
shaker style kitchen cabinets

Hotdaisies22 · 14/11/2022 00:08

Plastic grass - an absolute abomination in every way.
Leylandii hedges.
Lots of Christmas lights - esp in November.

Ketzele · 14/11/2022 00:23

So, so many things. Spotlights. Bar stools. Open plan. Primary colours. Red kettles. Hotel style bedrooms. Carpet. Symmetry. Cowhide rugs. Kate Moss prints. Glass tables. Big TVs. Marble bathrooms. Perspex light switch plates. Decorative logs. Beams. Exposed brick. Bifolds. Mountain range murals in kids bedrooms. Teepees. Freestanding baths. Sleigh beds.

But hey, my house is so small I have to sleep in the living room, along with the front door. My floors are peeling laminate, the walls are damp and the bathroom is embarrassing. It's feeling superior to people with red kettles that keeps me warm at night!

Thelongnights · 14/11/2022 00:37

There's a few things I hate like

laminated floors,
shower curtains,
plastic plants,
Novelty crap like Betty boop or Marilyn Monroe figures/framed pictures, just why?
Mirrored furniture,
The "everything one colour" trend (all grey or all white or all beige etc.)
Shocking bright walls in tiny rooms (like tiny bathrooms or narrow halls painted crimson red or primary blue) feels claustrophobic- oh, on topic with bathrooms- why do alot of people decorate in a seaside theme like shells or lighthouse figurines? Why are bathrooms associated with the seaside? Always kinda bugs me.
Toilet mat (not the bath mat, the one that goes round the toilet - boy mom friend put me right off them)
Animal print - I'll say I've seen it incorporated well on occasion - usually a statement piece in a large space but it rarely works well in small rooms especially in large amounts or with other loud or busy furnishings,
Hanging signs - "live laugh love" etc.
Those wall art designs with clocks set to certain times and decal that says "in this moment life stood still",
Actually I hate all wall decals - I'd overlook it in a kids room, but people putting quotes on their wall like it's their Facebook feed 🙄
Those canvas wall art were the image is spread across multiple canvases. There's probably a name for it.
Skyline artwork - large framed or canvas images of Las Vegas or New York.
Staged furniture without any real purpose - like a plush ottamin with a glass drinks tray set on top that's never used,
Those incredibly oversized chunky Knit blankets that are also just for show and never used,
Actually, drinks trays or trollys, that again are never used, wtf? I remember people went made when primark were selling one, look like dust collectors,
Sticking with alcohol, tacky home bars with drink dispensers on wall or neon lights (covid had people thinking this was a good idea)
Biggest pet peeve are "decorative books" you know the Mrs Hinch or coco channel books that you no have never been read,
Ridiculously oversized tv's & consoles with exposed wires.
Sticky back plastic on anything.
A lot of crystal (candle holders and picture frames)
Fake hanging ivy - my dd has this I hate it cause it gets dusty and getting dd to wipe them every so often is a pain, I'd say fine for a teens room but I've seen friends start hanging it in different rooms around their house - it's a little cringy since it's tiktok inspired by teenage girls bedrooms along with those LED lights.
Oh LED colour changing lights in any room except your kids bedroom - why are people framing their tv's with it?

I'm sure there's more but I already sound like a massive cunt, I swear I'm not judging anyone for having any of these things, my house decor could be your worse nightmare 🤷‍♀️

herdingcatss · 14/11/2022 00:53

I can't bear those "curated" bookshelves with books all sorted by colour. They often don't even look like real books to me, just fake boxes to look like something seen off instagram.

aintnothinbutagstring · 14/11/2022 00:58

I remember our old rented place had 90s Boho sun/moon/stars/horoscope tiles in the kitchen - they were so bad but grew on me eventually. Used to think about what kind of person was bold enough to pick such a thing.

My dd does this this her bookshelves, literally the most frustrating way to organise books - colour coded - should a crime, mine are alphabetical by author it's the only way that makes sense to me. Plus she uses kindle, she'll only buy a physical book after she's read it on kindle and only if the cover matches her "aesthetic" 😂

Also all grey everything, all white everything, all beige everything and all black everything
cheap mdf furniture
excessive minimalism
those smooth dark "modern" wood panelled bathrooms and kitchens - big yuk
integrated white goods
brown and black towels
mirrors on bed frames and mirrored decor in general (apart from an actual mirror)
cold/cool colours
no personal interests on show/ no books / no knick knacks/ no art / no plants /no personality
carpets everywhere (I prefer wooden flooring and rugs)

I hate it when people just have to follow an "aesthetic" without any real thought behind it. They just follow trends because it's trendy. I don't really get it tbh.

I can see my boss' room when on teams and she has those fake books on shelves all matchy matchy by colour. They don't look real at all. She's not even a reader so it's all just so fake and annoying to me lol (but so is she haha).

Most of my books are sorted by size so they aren't in any order but I prefer them that way. I like them looking a bit haphazard and random! Most of them are non-fiction covering various interests but I do have a kindle too, mainly for fiction but if I really love a book I'll buy a hard copy to keep as well, as things get buried on kindles and you forget what you have sometimes!

Dd is only 13, I'm pretty sure at her age I still had a "groovy chick" bed spread and lilac carpet 😂😂 my "aesthetic" was pretty much anything purple or inflatable, like those blow up chairs 😂 even had a lava lamp.

She has a gift card for the kindle she uses that to buy books - ebooks are often cheaper especially when it's an epic trilogy (first two are either free or close to nothing and the 3rd is usually were they make their money once you hooked lol) she only buys hard copies for the pretty books but uses her own allowance or bday money so I don't say anything.

I have friends who are grown women caught up with the aesthetic of books & home library's but don't read .. actually had a friend ask me where I bought my books to fill my shelves, was so odd 🙃 she doesn't read and couldn't believe 10-15 books could set her back over €100, she posted a pic to insta a few days later of her coffee table with a coco channel book sitting casually along side a candle and wine glass - I know for a fact she hasn't even opened the book she bought it because it looked nice on the table. She asked the group chat about filling her shelves and was told to buy a bunch of books at second hand shop and recover them to look pretty - others had done it and posted pics. They even sent her YouTube videos.

Plastic kitchen sinks? Have I missed a trend?

I have a composite sink that’s like plastic. I definitely wouldn’t get one again, it’s a right pain to clean.

In terms of my interior design dislikes, I really hate those painted geometric feature walls. They’ve dated so quickly.

pollyglot · 14/11/2022 02:34

Painted geometric walls!!! The antithesis of the Golden Rectangle, and therefore (for me anyway) very disturbing.

Q2C4 · 14/11/2022 03:03

Dark navy walls (so bleak!).
Minimalist style to the point where there is nothing of "personality" on show.
Exposed brickwork.
Open fires / wood burning stoves (dangerous for children & sources of ultra-fine particulate matter (particularly bad for those with respiratory illnesses)).

Piles of cushions on beds.
